After years of rumors that the Beacon Falls Cafe was looking to sell, it has finally closed. The owners, Bob and Linda Nevelus, shared on their Instagram and laminated sign posted on their door that they were retiring. “Closing the doors of the Beacon Falls Cafe is truly bittersweet. We are excited to begin this next chapter and grateful for the opportunity to slow down and enjoy retirement. At the same time, saying goodbye to a place that has been such a meaningful part of our lives is incredibly emotional.”
The announcement came on September 21th, 2026, with their projected final closing date being October 3rd. On September 28th, they were closed for staffing shortages, but picked back up for regular breakfast cooking, which regulars came back for again and again. “The Cafe has been so much more than a business to us. It has been a huge part of our lives - a place where we worked, laughed, celebrated, built friendships, and created countless memories. Over the years, so many of you walked through our doors as customers and became cherished friends and part of our extended family.” The sidewalk tables outside of the Beacon Falls Cafe were regularly packed with diners.
The owner, Bob Nevelus, is a retired police officer who pursued his dream of becoming a chef via training at CIA. He is a vocal supporter of ICE and goes by a pseudonym, Neve Bob, in Facebook, where he used to troll A Little Beacon Blog’s ICE reporting with a photo of a yellow highway sign of a man tackling another man, which says: “Watch For Falling ICE.” Because of Bob’s persistent trolling of ALBB’s Facebook page, persistent anti-DEI statements, and insults, he has been banned from ALBB’s Facebook and Instagram pages. He will remain banned, as these men tend to get more regular and verbose with more time on their hands in Retirement.
The times when Bob did express unity with ALBB was when we published about traffic and city government issues. In one of his parting messages on the Beacon Cafe’s Instagram account, he threw up a parking ticket he received in the final days of the restaurant’s Open Hours, confirming that the Beacon Police do in fact, still issue parking tickets. The Instagram account said: “My going away gift from the city of Beacon after 18 years of serving the city. a parking ticket issued four minutes before the limit. lol.”
A Realtor, Yameil Nunez, reported on the closure of the Cafe. In her report, she mentioned how longtime restaurant BJ’s Soul Food has also closed, as well as Homespun, both staples of Beacon’s Main Street. It needs to be noted that both of those businesses retired. Barbara Sims of BJ’s owned the building the restaurant was in for 47 years, and sold the building after listing it for $1.1 million. She had made investments in it over the years, with a recent renovation. Saigon Pho has opened in its place to rave reviews.
The original owners of Homespun sold the business to a new owner, who then shepherded the business through forced COVID closures, parklets, potentially selling the business, and eventually let it go when he moved on to pursue his former career of teaching. The business that is there now is Dave the Butcher, who has painted the exterior a different color.
“Regardless of whether or not someone has a criminal history, it is not lawful, it is not okay, to shoot a father in the afternoon with his son in the backseat. That is not how we resolve legal disputes in this country. We resolve them in buildings like these, in courtrooms.”
— Harold Solis, a lawyer with Make the Road New York
On Sunday evening, Counsel representing 28-year-old Oscar Belgal of the Dominican Republic, who was shot by ICE in Marble Hill in the Bronx while his 5-year-old son was in the car, issued a Press Release to the media with an update on Oscar’s physical condition and location.
Released body camera video shows Oscar positioned in a sitting position after he was shot and handcuffed. NYPD arrived to the scene and saw that he was shot. They lifted him from the ground to stuff him into their police cruiser to bring him to the ER. “The officers were at the scene for about a minute before deciding to carry Belgal to their patrol car,” ABC7NY reported, “and take him to the nearest hospital. They arrived at the emergency room 90 seconds later.”
ABC7NY reported that Oscar was treated at New York-Presbyterian Allen Hospital, where he was “discharged at 9:58pm and taken by ICE over the George Washington Bridge to New Jersey, arriving at Delaney Hall in Newark at 10:43pm,” .
In their joint statement as counsel for Oscar, The Legal Aid Society and Make the Road New York stated that Oscar has been detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn. “He is currently in solitary confinement, a bullet remains lodged in his neck, the left side of his face is numb, and he can barely hear out of his left ear. Doctors have told him he urgently needs surgery, but that the procedure was too dangerous to perform Thursday evening without a specialized surgeon present. Although he was instructed to return to the hospital this week, he has been left in the dark about whether that surgery will even happen. He is also suffering from a shoulder wound caused by shattered glass during the incident.”
Oscar’s Counsel stated that in addition to being in solitary confinement, he lacks access to food, and is suffering with inadequate medical care despite a bullet remaining lodged in his neck during his urgent need for surgery. His Counsel says “he says he has not eaten a single meal since Thursday and has been told that the only water available to him comes from a bathroom sink.”
The Legal Aid Society and Make the Road New York stated that the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn is “a facility federal judges have described as ‘barbaric’ and ‘inhumane,’ where officers have been characterized as ‘contemptuous of human life and dignity. All the while, a bullet remains lodged in his neck.”
According to ABC7NY, ICE was pursuing Oscar. After he was shot and in ICE custody, “immigration advocates filed a petition to block his deportation, which a federal judge approved.”
During a press conference, Harold Solis, a lawyer with Make the Road New York, stated: "Regardless of whether or not someone has a criminal history, it is not lawful, it is not okay, to shoot a father in the afternoon with his son in the backseat. That is not how we resolve legal disputes in this country. We resolve them in buildings like these, in courtrooms."
The Legal Aid Society and Make the Road New York exclaimed: “The deliberate indifference Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed toward Mr. Belgal when he was shot on Thursday, and the treatment he has endured in detention since, are further examples of the cruelty and disregard for basic human dignity that have long defined this agency. We will continue to fight for Mr. Belgal’s immediate release from detention and to ensure that he receives the medical care, due process, and basic human dignity to which he is entitled under the law.”

Sunday was very rainy, as has been every Sunday for what feels like the past 5 Sundays (except for last Sunday for the Spirit of Beacon Day’s Rain Date, thank goodness). Tucked inside of Gather at 201 Main Street, in between Beacon Bread and the new Pho Saigon, was a delightful experience of kitchen upgrades. Like, if you finally allowed yourself to have boutique-y things in your pantry, Gather would be the place to find it.
This Sunday’s mission was to find two things: a new salt holder, and a bottle straw washer. Mini ALBB said that his water bottle had mold in the sucking part, and Mama ALBB has had enough with her wooden salt holder that is now permanently sticky.
Gather had the delicate pipe cleaner, but the salt holder is on order for two more weeks. Owner Amy has ordered a glass salt holder with a lid, which sounds quaint and dainty and worth the 2 week wait (or more, let’s be real with shipping expectations).
The cookbooks curated by Gather are also worth the shelf space in your kitchen. Flatbread recipes and open faced sandwich ideas. For those who are into cocktails and charcuterie, you will find plenty here to give you ideas. Even the cheeses from local farms in Pine Plains, NY, Bethlehem, PA, and familiar names like Farm Creamery.
Gather is selling craft beer by the cans now. One can pop in to get what one needs to satisfy an evening. Mocktail ingredients are on the way as well.
Next upgrade after the salt shaker is acquired will be the cheese grater with a package of the cheese risotto to make at home.
PS: Thanksgiving Planning has been activated. Order your Turkey from Eggbert's Free Range Farm while at the farmers markets this weekend. Details below.

Screenshot of the 10/5/2026 City Council Meeting Video where Councilperson Lastar Gorton is identified as Mayor Gorton. As Mayor lee Kyriacou passes the gravel down to the new mayor in jest, Deputy Mayor and Councilperson Amber Grant puts her hand up to block the move, saying “Absolutely not. That stops at me.”
Excerpt of The Minutes from September 21, 2026, where Councilperson Gorton is identified as Mayor GOrton.
In a thrilling edition of the “Approval of The Minutes” at the end of the City Council’s last meeting on 10/5/2026, Councilperson Zach Smith of Ward 2 found an error. “I do have a revision to The Minutes actually,” he stated. City Administrator Ben Swanson expressed his intrigue with an “Oooh!” while Mayor Lee Kyriacou corrected the process, stating: “Did you first make the proposal to adopt?” Councilperson Lastar Gorton of Ward 1 stated the issue: “I'm Mayor Gorton.”
City Administrator Ben said: “Congratulations!” followed by Mayor Lee Kyriacou saying: “Wait, what? I’m sorry…” Councilperson Carolyn Bennett Glauda followed up in jest with another process question: “Did you sign the book?” to which Councilperson Zach reiterated: “She’s Mayor Gorton.”
“I’m Mayor Gorton,” Councilperson Gorton reiterated. “Oh!” Mayor Kyriacou replied. “Here. Pass this down to her,” and he handed his mayoral gravel to Councilperson Amber Grant, who serves as Deputy Mayor.
“Absolutely not,” Councilperson Amber said, as she raised her hand in a stop motion while wagging her finger. “That stops at me.”
Laughter ensued, and Councilperson Lastar continued: “If anyone sees something or knows something I don’t…”
The process continued as usual, with Councilperson Amber calling for a motion to open to make the correction, with a 2nd from Councilperson Zach.
In the past, Councilperson Lastar’s predecessor, Molly Rhodes, who has since moved on to serve as a Dutchess County Legislator, was the keeper of correcting The Minutes, often finding minor typographical errors. Mayor Kyriacou would usually refer to the passing of The Minutes as the “titillating” final moments of the City Council Meeting.
A Little Beacon Blog does not know who types or produces The Minutes - if it is AI or a person - resulting perhaps in wishful thinking.
In early August 2026, word began circulating that the City of Beacon’s HR Director, Sara Morris, was leaving her position. Shortly after, the rumor expanded to include that Sara was moving to serve within the New York State Bridge Authority. The City of Beacon does not customarily comment or announce when city employees resign or are terminated, reserving these announcements for select celebratory retirements.
A Little Beacon Blog has been waiting for a public announcement of Sara’s departure in order to report the employment change, but none had come thus far. The supposedly open position is not listed on the HR Director page of the City’s website.
How Confirmation Of The Employment Departure Was Acquired
Basic information about the law was given by Ben Swanson, the City Administrator, who stated: "Essentially this law is pretty straight forward. Gives the city the flexibility of making non-budget cycle amendments to salaries for leadership and management simply as a way that would give us the flexibility that if we have staff that are considering other opportunities that we may have some flexibility in changing compensation to retain key leadership staff. It doesn't obligate us to do anything, but gives us some flexibility in that regard."
Attorney Nick Ward-Willis further clarified to state that the amendment to the charter mandates that while the Mayor can make this recommendation, it requires that the salary change be brought to the Council to approve that change.
After no one commented at Public Hearing, Mayor Kyriacou began to close the Public Hearing, but added: "This was prompted by the loss of one of our senior managers to a adjacent state agency, who I didn't think was a better place to go, but was paying better. And so that's what prompting this. I'll take a motion to close the - "
As he took the motion to close, Katie Hellmuth of A Little Beacon Blog asked to make a question. “I’ll allow it,” the Mayor said. Katie asked: "Are we allowed to know who that person was? We see who gets hired, but we do not see who leaves, unless they have a..."
"It was our Head of HR," the Mayor confirmed.
Screenshot of Sara Morris as new HR Director for the New York State Bridge Authority.
Shortly before that, in March, the City Administrator Chris White abruptly retired. While the announced plan was for Chris to leave mid-June, he never returned to the office. While Chris is no spring chicken, he could be considered a young buck. There was no stated reason why he left. Speculation remains open and A Little Beacon Blog is seeking confirmation on how events unfolded in that departure.
Since then, employees have come and gone from the City of Beacon, including Chris Servedio who signed on as a supporting witness to James’ claims of targeted harassment, according to the complaint that ALBB has seen. Chris was hired in April 2023, and resigned in 2026. He was replaced by John Testerman in July 2026.
Sara was the City of Beacon’s second HR Director, having replaced Gina Basile who was hired in a shared services arrangement while the City of Beacon was financially investing in firing Reuben Simmons, who at one time, served as the Highway Department’s Superintendent of Streets. His position was dissolved during an internal dispute led by the department of that time, was replaced by current head Michael Manzi. Reuben usually drives the Street Sweeper truck and continues with his arbitration hearings, while continuing to pursue leadership roles such as Union President, a position he once held.
Spirit of Beacon Day is happening this Sunday. No matter what. Rain or shine. This is the rain date. There is no rain date for the rain date. Everyone was so bummed about the postponment for the nor'easter, that we couldn't even email you about it. Made a few videos to show you the intense consideration the Spirit Committee was having about the decision, which you can watch here and here.
How Did Beacon Fare During The Nor'easter?
Last Sunday was surreal in Beacon. It was September 27th, the Last Sunday In September, which means Spirit of Beacon Day. But the nor'easter was predicted, so the rain and wind jitters set in. With rain predicted for the rain date as well, it was not immediately clear what would happen.
It started with business like Five Pennies Creamery asking ALBB if Spirit will really hold the line even during the nor'easter (see video interview here). Then band teachers begin to consider pulling instruments to protect them from the rain. Then parents begin to consider pulling children from marching in the parade. There's a lot to consider. The Spirit Committee called ALBB the Saturday before the big day to get advice about canceling. Listen to that reenacted phone call here.
In the end, the day was postponed to the following Sunday (tomorrow!). Even the I Am Beacon 5K run postponed, which hardly ever happens. Oddly, and most thankfully, almost nothing happened in Beacon. While all around us, wind and rain swirled, causing flooding. The tracks in Cold Spring flooded out. A tree fell across 9D, closing it down for a bit. A shark was spotted swimming in neighborhood streets in New Jersey. The Billy Joe's sign blew into the Hudson River.
The Protection Prayers for Spirit of Beacon Day were so strong, that they did keep the weather away, if only to protect Beacon from damage. Which is a true Spirit of Beacon.
As of today's refresh of the Weather app, rain is predicted for Sunday. It's been fluctuating since last week. The Spirit of Beacon Committee says: "Delayed is not denied. Failing to plan is planning to fail. We're taking all the precautions, prayers, positive energy, and insight that we can. See you on Sunday, rain or shine (not in a wind advisory, tho). Please keep this in mind, heart, and spirit, this is a day for neighbors to celebrate each other, on Main Street. Positive energy activates constant elevation."

Spirit of Beacon Day is happening this Sunday. No matter what. Rain or shine. This is the rain date. There is no rain date for the rain date. Everyone was so bummed about the postponment for the nor'easter.
In the end, the day was postponed.
There are a variety of trendy wipes these days for adults, like the DUDE WIPES brand at CVS that does come in different sizes! Pictured here are XL. However, makers of traditional baby wipes don’t discriminate ages, so if you wanted to use baby wipes, those should work also. Especially for sensitive skin. Dollar General also carries a scent-free line of baby wipes for $1 that is a good value.
If you wanted to carry a few wipes in your purse or fanny pack, you could buy a cute little carrying case from several boutiques on Main Street in Beacon. See ALBB’s Shopping Guide for recommendations, like Play, Zakka Joy, Another Door, and more.
Don’t flush those wipes, though, no matter how flush friendly the packaging tells you they are. Otherwise, you will need to use ALBB’s Business Directory to find a plumber to flush you out.
The day after an article published on A Little Beacon Blog showing the video of a citizen speaking at Beacon’s City Council during Public Comment asking why the man who was caught on camera mooning another citizen on August 28th was not arrested, the Beacon Chief of Police Tom Figlia issued an Information Release to defend the decision of the Beacon Police Department in not arresting him, citing they employed de-escalation techniques.
Chief Figlia defended their lack of arresting action, saying they deal with people “across the spectrum of society.” While public lewdness does happen in Beacon by people who are on the spectrum and are known to the Beacon Police for their condition and treated with compassion, it seems that for others, mooning in Beacon is acceptable if the stars align.
8/28/2026:ALBB acquired video of a portion of the incident that included the mooner mooning again while the police were de-escalating him, and while their backs were turned. Before mooning for the second time, he threatened the man in the pale pink shirt, stating that “these guys know me” referring to the police officers and then continued to threaten the man walking away, saying that he would “kick his ass” and “put him into an ambulance.” He then mooned another individual which was recorded on camera while police back’s were turned.
8/31/2026:ALBB emailed Chief Figlia to ask if the mooner had been arrested for his action. Chief Figlia did not reply.
9/8/2026: A Beacon citizen spoke at the City Council meeting, asking “How much butt crack do the Beacon Police need for it to become a Class B Misdemeanor? Do they need a tape measure to measure that crack to make sure it's ‘enough exposure’ before they take action?” The article was widely shared. Some readers who are usually in the Law and Order crowd, who demand that laws be followed, instead became a “Mind your business!” crowd. Chris Prezbyl proclaimed: "Should’ve just finished your mango lassi and move on with your day." Tray Dirito Hockler was outraged, saying: "OMG...The white man is from GENERATIONS of Beaconites. Mind your business before someone kicks your A-S-S..AHAHA..Karen!!!!" Tray continued: "Nobody cares about Dean [Catalano] mooning Flackey, the cops or other wise because it's hysterical."
Flackey was not mentioned in any of these articles, and was only mentioned by citizens in Comments. It was the unexpected mooning by Dean of anyone that was caught on camera, that was the focus of the article and the speech.

Beacon PD History of Use Of Force and De-Escalation Techniques
Police departments change over time with different leaders and officers. In 2010, the Beacon Police Department emerged from a federal investigation, where it was concluded that: “Today’s agreement concludes the investigation without any finding that the BPD violated the law, but implements a series of reforms and improvements designed to improve the operation of the BPD. On June 21, 2005, and Nov. 14, 2008, the department’s Civil Rights Division Special Litigation Section and the U.S. Attorney’s Office issued technical assistance letters to the BPD. The agreement, signed today by the department, implements those recommendations.”
Some of those recommendations included “use of force policy to emphasize verbal de-escalation techniques,” among other reforms. In 2018, officers began wearing body cameras under Chief Kevin Junjulas. Chief Figlia was a Lieutenant at that time, and was in charge of the program. Then Chief Junjulas said that the cameras are a “good tool for internal investigations, to determine what actually happened. The video is right there.”
In April 2024, Beacon Police responded to a call about a man threatening to shoot a couple near Peaceful Provisions donut shop when they asked him not to touch their dog during morning coffee. That individual continued walking down the sidewalk and was apprehended several blocks down at the car wash, where he was taken to the ground by Beacon PD. A rifle was used, and an officer knelt down to put his hand on the man’s head to keep him down. ALBB reported on this incident and had video footage of that as well, which was published.
Chief Figlia, who was a Lieutenant at the time, eagerly called ALBB for a copy of the video that he could use in his use-of-force training, since the officers carried through the action within their training.
The Beacon Police can use cameras on Main Street to roll back within that moment to see if the alleged exposure happened. The Beacon Police have not commented to say if their cameras picked the alleged first buttocks exposure. A civilian video did, however, capture at least a second indecent exposure by the mooner. It is this video footage of an intended exposing action that is being questioned by some in the public. Not any Disorderly Conduct the Beacon Police allege all three individuals were doing. This is a separate violation that was captured and published on video.
The Information Release
The following is the Information Release published on Facebook by Beacon’s Chief Figlia.
On August 28, 2026, at approximately 3:40pm the Beacon Police Department received a call for an unknown problem at the county building at 223 Main St. While we usually do not do releases about violation level incidents, this one has apparently caused concerns of favoritism or police inaction among some members of our community.
On that day, upon their arrival officers found three subjects, all of whom they were familiar with from multiple interactions, yelling on the street. One was wearing a pale pink Spirit of Beacon Day t-shirt, one was wearing a blue t-shirt and one was wearing a darker pink t-shirt. They were also approached by security from the county building and were advised that the individual in the pale pink Spirit of Beacon Day t-shirt caused a disturbance inside and was not allowed to return inside the building at that time.
When the officers arrived all three individuals were legally committing the act of Disorderly Conduct, a violation level offense, by yelling, cursing and causing alarm for other people in a public area. One subject was alleged to have exposed his buttocks at another, which constitute Exposure of a Person, also a violation level offense. One subject was visibly intoxicated and stated he had consumed "a couple of beers" and another was expressing emotional concerns over a recent death in the family.
Though all three individuals could have legally been charged with violation level offenses that carry similar consequences to a traffic ticket, officers determined that given the totality of the circumstances, the best course of action was advise the one subject not to return to the county building at that time, and to employ de-escalation techniques to calm and separate the involved parties, which they successfully did.
When feasible and safe, the Beacon Police Department routinely attempts to employ de-escalation techniques rather than immediate arrests for low level offenses and people in crisis across the spectrum of society. Despite widespread public calls for just this course of action, the untrained public often reacts negatively when they actually see it in practice and mistakes it for favoritism.
When it can be safely employed, de-escalation techniques usually involve things such as reinforcing that the officers are there to help the person, lowering voices, validating feelings, using the involved individual's name and attempting to create unity between the officer and the person in need of de-escalation, all of which were done in this incident. That does not mean that the officers favor one person or another, or approve of that individual's behavior. Rather it likely means that they attempting to use best practices to de-escalate a non-violent incident, where there does not appear to be an imminent danger to anyone, involving a low-level offense such as the incident above.
Your annual reminder that it's $1 Wednesdays at Beacon Creamery for $1 Soft Serve Ice cream. Earlier today, the flavors of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Vanilla/Chocolate Swirl were available. While supplies last. This is a hot spot to hit after school as South Avenue kids walk home from school.
This is also one of the busiest intersections in Beacon, with only Carmen the Crossing Guard protecting these little people - and big people as they cross. There is no additional Beacon PD coverage to enforce any traffic laws broken in the morning or afternoon, such as illegal left turns from South Avenue, illegal parking on both corners, running the crosswalk or running the light. Same goes for Ron’s Ice Cream on the other end of town near Memorial Park, where it is rumored, a traffic light was supposed to go up, but has not. Speed humps are helping, but some drivers seek to measure air time.
Both Crossing Guards say they have gained an increase of very tiny little ones crossing their streets, possibly due to the new Pre-K program available at all schools now.
Meanwhile, on display at Beacon Creamery colorings of the Dummy Light as part of the centennial celebration of the Dummy Light's 100th year. These colorings are from two 4th graders in the Beacon City School District, as part of a project guided by Lovely Shanti Kelly.
The City of Beacon entered into a contract with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley to provide increased access to Beacon tenants facing eviction. They may also be able to help with sources of rent arrears assistance. Call the paralegal, Steven Mihalik at 845-253-6953 to inquire.
