HIRING: Engagement Editor at Highlands Current

The Highlands Current is looking for a part-time Engagement Manager to develop a broader and deeper connection with their community in print, online and in person. This is a salaried position.

Responsibilities

Community Outreach

  • Organize and lead in-person events and activities that connect the staff to the community.

  • Establish and manage community partnerships.

  • Assist with engagement efforts of membership and fundraising programs.

  • Monitor analytics to measure effectiveness of outreach.

Social Media

  • Manage branded social media accounts for the newsroom.

  • Coach and oversee newsroom staff in use of social media.

  • Introduce new social tools and train the staff in their adoption.

  • Oversee gathering of social media metrics.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years experience at a news organization, with emphasis on working in an “audience-building” capacity.

  • Strong organizational skills to plan and execute community events; ability to handle project oversight.

  • Strong interpersonal skills for work with staff and community.

  • Strong social media skills to oversee newsroom’s social media efforts.

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.

  • Familiarity with newspaper membership and fundraising programs preferred.

HIRING: Senior Editor At Highlands Current

The Highlands Current is a growing nonprofit weekly newspaper and website that covers Cold Spring, Garrison and Beacon, New York. We are adding the position of Senior Editor to work closely with our Editor and are seeking a journalist eager to engage with our community in print, online and in person.

Responsibilities

  • Works with the editor to execute editorial strategy, planning content for digital and print platforms.

  • Oversees assigning and editing of projects and special reports in cooperation with the editor; reports/writes as assigned.

  • Edits stories for both print edition and online, ensuring highest journalistic standards in all mediums.

  • Oversees production, content creation and managerial duties to meet publishing deadlines when the editor is away.

  • Helps direct and support social-media strategy.

  • Performs administrative, research, oversight and other duties as assigned by managing editor.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years’ news reporting and editing experience.

  • Experience in packaging content ideally for both print and digital platforms.

  • Experience in overseeing in-depth projects and performing insightful content editing.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Social media skills strongly preferred.

COMMITTEE MEMBER OPENING: Beacon Farmers Market Committee Members

The Beacon Farmers Market is seeking new Market Committee Members. Here’s your chance to support the Market and advocate for the change you would like to see. The mission of the Beacon Farmers Market is to feed and engage the Beacon community, support local farms and businesses and create a more just food system. The Market Committee is a group of volunteers who steer the Market and advise the Market Manager year-round.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Every Member is expected to attend 4 meetings a year to plan for the Indoor and Outdoor Market seasons and to officially select vendors for each season.

  • In addition, Members must join at least one Sub-Committee which allows individuals to tailor their involvement to their interests and specific skills. The Sub-committees focuses are:

    STEERING COMMITTEE
    Focused on larger partnerships, agenda-setting for Full Committee Meetings, lease agreements, permits and liability compliance, and additional concerns as decided by the Committee.

    FARMING & AGRICULTURE COMMITTEE
    Broadly responsible for looking out for the interests of the Farm Vendors, go on Farm Visits with the Market Manager, work on Farm recruitment each season, and additional concerns as decided by the Committee.

    FOOD JUSTICE COMMITTEE
    Focused on fulfilling the Food Justice component of the Market's Mission including coordination with partner organizations, looking out for the interests of Food Benefit users, and additional concerns as decided by the Committee.

    EDUCATION + ENTERTAINMENT
    Supporting the Market Manager in programming educational events and additional entertainment at the Market, engaging with related communities, and additional concerns as decided by the Committee.

    MARKETING + VISITOR SERVICES
    Take on expanding the customer base for the Market through marketing campaigns, at-market initiatives, engaging with the broader community, and additional concerns as decided by the Committee.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine comprehensive eye exams and vision care procedures

  • Provide extreme attention to detail and thorough examinations

  • Administer special testing as needed

  • Customize patient treatment based on individual needs in order to improve or correct vision

  • Assess the need for a 3rd party referral

  • Contact lens evaluation/insertion & removal

  • Tend to eye emergencies as needed

  • Coordinate patient care with in-house providers and Opticians

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • License to practice Optometry in New York State
