Black Owned Hudson Valley Businesses

A Little Beacon Blog celebrates Black Lives Matter with “Black Owned Hudson Valley” — a directory of local companies to support in light of BLM. This logo was designed by Perry Crosson with The Hyacinth Group. A Little Beacon Blog put out the call for designers from the Black community, and Lauren Johnson of the Hyacinth Group answered that call with her recommendation of designer Perry, who has a background in architecture and graphic design. The directive that ALBB gave to Perry was that the logo must include any and all shades of Brown. Perry took that directive and ran deep with his inspiration, finding it in a building in Newburgh, by way of the original owners of that building, who were Black.

Inspired by the story of the Alsdorf family, designer Perry Crosson with The Hyacinth Group has created a logo that captures the essence of Black entrepreneurship in our area. Built in 1915 by Simon and Ulysses Alsdorf, the building depicted in the logo was home to the Alsdorf Academy, a music and dance school founded by Professor Dubois Alsdorf, the grandsons of former slave George Alsdorf, who came to Newburgh with his wife Caroline within 20 years of his manumission. George made his way to Newburgh in 1830 after years of slavery in Ulster County. Dubois Alsdorf started the dance academy in 1849. George Alsdorf was a central conductor for the Underground Railroad. George also taught music and formed a band that held large concerts in places like the County Courthouse steps during the 1840s.

The Alsdorf Academy was just one of many businesses this enterprising family owned in the Hudson Valley. They also founded a bakery, hair salon and catering company that served clients of all races. Explore the directory to find local Black-owned companies to support now and forever.

To include as many businesses as possible, while keeping it easy for you to use, this directory is organized by region first, and then area of business. We are continuing to update this Business Directory with new listings and services. If there is a business you think should be included in this list, please let us know! Even if the area of business is not mentioned here yet.

As we make this list, we have gotten questions from business owners like, “I am mixed race, can I be included?” Of course! Please know that lists like this do create divisions, and that is not our intent. If you are Black or Brown from this country or another, are mixed, mocha or caramel, please reach out to be included. Dumpling lets personal shoppers like Abijah set their own prices. They can charge a flat fee, or a % of groceries (or the item picked up).

HOW IT WORKS
Dumpling is connected to Key Food, Subway, The Home Depot, CVS, Hannaford, Shop Rite, Aldi, Chipotle, Boston Market, and more. The app lets Abijah communicate directly with you, showing a photo with any question he’s got while picking up what you need.
