SCHEDULE: Retail Therapy - Things To Do In Beacon 8/7/2020

NL_collage_08072020.jpg
Not gonna lie, Fam, it was a little hard to get out of bed today what with all of the news going on. But you know what today is around here...it's Friday, which is the day for the Retail Therapy edition of the blog. After reading the harrowing experience of our media friend Chip Rowe of the Highlands Current barely be able to publish their weekly edition of the paper due to the power and Internet outage (can't wait to pick up a copy to see their storm photos), every day becomes that much more important to just. keep. trying.

Sometimes these Friday newsletters arrive into your inbox in the evening for you because we pack in a few new articles for you. We've woven them in below. See if you can find them!

Please Welcome As New Sponsors...
La Mere Clothing and Goods! Girls Girls Girls...La Mere is open for in-person shopping, walk-in style. You can go in and out, but you have a lot to styles to find inside. New inventory arrives regularly, and includes home goods like this charging crystal, and to come: a girls section for clothing and style.

It's Second Saturday This Weekend! But...

RiverWinds Gallery - Beacon's Longest Running Gallery - Is Closing.
This is major news. Expect a video in our InstaStories with a sobbing emoji. RiverWinds opened in Beacon 17 years ago when a handful of artists shared a vision. Their story is here in this feature article. They cite the pandemic as the reason for their closure. Their "Everything Must Go" sale is now. Every day. Until August 31, 2020.

You may remember the hammer people at Brett's Hardware, and other pieces that have been acquired to stay in place. See what else Marion Royael has in store for you.

Clutter's 3 New Shows - Color!
Clutter's three new shows opening include "They Came From Planet Rainbow Sparkle", the 4th edition of this show in which 5 dozen artists are each assigned a color to create a piece, then more than 100 pieces are arranged within the Clutter Gallery, by color. They create this sort of rainbow spectrum of whimsy.

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Every so often, you'll see a call for sponsorship of a single book for a prisoner. It's the Prison Books Project that Binnacle Books started, and it's growing in popularity. We got the scoop from Binnacle Books on how it works, and why it might be growing in popularity. Read all about it here! "There are approximately 1,700 people incarcerated at Fishkill Correctional, which is in the City of Beacon. Between 200 and 250 of those people are in solitary confinement at any given time. Incidentally, people in solitary confinement can and do request books from us. According to one person who is currently in solitary, reading is one of the only things he can do to keep himself occupied. We sent him a bunch of books."

TIN SHINGLE
You've seen the challenge. You may have participated. The beautiful black and white photos of women, in the name of supporting women. But why this challenge? Why now? Because it is a revived trend of a challenge that the media is saying originated in Brazil, and now is in the name of Turkey - for women who are murdered by their spouses, boyfriends and other domestic violence results. The black and white represents life being snuffed out of color. If you jumped in too fast on this challenge, and didn't use the hashtags that support femicide going on in Turkey, or domestic abuse increases in the US due to COVID, then listen to Tin Shingle's TuneUp webinar on what to do when social media challenges come around. For instance: what did you do on Blackout Tuesday?

SCHEDULE: Happening This Weekend - 7/17/2020

The upcoming days and weeks are going to be hard(er) for everyone as Pandemic Unemployment Insurance runs out, and businesses have gone through their PPP loans. A Little Beacon Blog was fortunate enough to have been granted a PPP loan, and that payroll has come to an end. We remain committed to promoting Beacon and informing our readers as best we can, but several of our advertising accounts went on pause during the pandemic (THANK YOU to our current advertisers who have been able to support us throughout!).

Therefore, you're going to see us push our own business model a bit, which is the exciting advertising package we created for businesses small and large. You might be thinking: "Create a GoFundMe account!" and the reason we aren't is because: 1. Our website can take contributions directly! 2. We want our business model to be sustainable even during a pandemic. To do that, we need sponsor support. We think we can do it! And we sell tote bags!

WHERE YOU COME IN:
Main Street: When things shut down, we threw advertising out the window, and promoted shops and restaurants in this newsletter by way of these fun features you see below. Readers love them, and we love singing the praises and promoting great finds.

Boscobel - Now Open For Scheduled Social Distancing
"Boscobel Reimangines Its Experience; Waves $50K Rent Of Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival; Opens For Outdoor Social Distancing"

Location: 1601 Route 9D, Garrison, NY, 10524
Like many farms, camps, and museums, Boscobel was getting ready to launch its spring season into summer when the pandemic hit and mandates shut down every business. Back in March, thinking that warmer weather outdoor gatherings would be safe, they tried to move forward with an Open Air Flex Pass ticket program for their popular tenant, the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF), so that customers could buy tickets to the upcoming Shakespeare performances. However HVSF was unable to hold any performances due to rehearsal and gathering restrictions out of safety. Boscobel waved the HVSF rent of $50,000, and moved forward with re-imagining how it can continue. Additionally, they will begin researching and incorporating the histories of Boscobel’s early Black inhabitants, funded by a Humanities New York grant. Walking the grounds is free for households of healthcare workers, and tickets are now available for the public. Scheduling in advance is required for both types.

Itching For Second Saturday - Happening This Weekend: 7/10/2020

We know...We know...you want your Second Saturday experience, and you want it now. So do the artists! They want to reach you. But we're still in Pandemic Land, so artists are getting creative. A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Editor, Catherine Sweet has hunted around, and found a new window display from the ever-so-careful No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Book Works, who's literary and artistic experience usually invite touch or closeness with paper. This exhibit features a Beacon artist, Edwin Torres. Learn all about it here.

Phase 4 has brought back the arts with restrictions.  Museums are opening and galleries are slowly opening up on Main Street.  We have a few openings this weekend - in person, online, and even art show window displays.
CLUTTER
163 Main Street

Clutter Gallery is excited to present Silent Killer, a Mr. KumKum solo show. Says Clutter: "This event marks Mr KumKum's first US solo show!! Comprised of five micro runs of hand-painted masterpieces, the selection includes pop culture icons, a snake in disguise, explosives, insects and more!"
Clutter's Social Distancing Guidelines: "Due to the ongoing coronavirus situation we will only be allowing in ten guests at a time. NO ONE will be admitted without a mask, so please make sure you are prepared. We ask that everyone observe social distancing rules both inside and outside the gallery."

ARTIST STANLEY LINDWASSER HAS PASSED
You last saw one of Stanley's exhibits at Oak Vino. But you may have seen Stanley himself walking up and down Main Street, as he often did with his little dog. Recently, he would have had his oxygen attached to him to help him make it through the walk. In May, Stanley has passed away from pulmonary fibrosis.

The Back Together Guide - 7/3/2020

You still have many choices of things to do this weekend, even though, fireworks in Beacon have been postponed this year.  Below in our Events listings are three alternative locations you can watch fireworks from this year. You can read more about it in this article

Have you seen an increase in chalk-art today? Look for more this weekend. Moraya Seeger DaGeare, the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, is spearheading a city-wide protest project - "To My Old Racist Earth," inviting residents and local businesses to action again social injustice through street art. Whether it's chalk art, signs, posters, murals, the weather this weekend should be dry. Get the full scoop about Moraya and #ToMyOldRacistEarth in this article.

“To My Old Racist Earth Art” Project
Day

Time: All Day

Organized by the granddaughter of Pete Seeger, on July 3rd (hopefully not a rainy day) we will take to the streets, driveways, sidewalks and parking lots, to draw art that highlights marginalized groups. The name of this project is a play on the title of the Pete Seeger song, “To My Old Brown Earth." It can be chalk art, or you can paint your own signs and put them in your yards, front doors, and windows. This can mean #BlackLivesMatter-inspired art. It can also mean anything that speaks to the corrupt system we are breaking down. Here is a great example from The Studio @ Beacon

ANTALEK & MOORE
Antalek and Moore Insurance Agency wants to make sure you know about a pandemic-based credit that has been issued by several insurance companies for auto-insurance. To ease the financial burden, insurance companies like Travelers have issued a 15% Stay At Home credit for April, May and June statements to bank accounts connected with the billing system, or sent checks home. If you have questions about if you received this, or if your insurance company provided it, call Antalek and Moore today. Most credits were automatic, so there was nothing you needed to do. Please note, this only happened with participating auto insurance companies that Antalek and Moore represents. They can also help you switch carriers if you want to feel the love from a different carrier.

Juneteenth Celebrations, Happening This Weekend, AND Retail Therapy Guide! - 6/19/2020

Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued. Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Juneteenth Independence Day or Juneteenth National Freedom Day (a Union general rode to Texas to deliver the very late memo, to that state who was not enforcing the freedom law). Governor Cuomo announced he's proposing to make Juneteenth a NY State holiday beginning 2021. Mayor Kyriacou made it official in Beacon.

This weekend there will be several events to hear from your community and learn about the history of this date that is not often discussed in school.  Click on the individual fliers below for a closer view and see details below in our Events Guide listings. The Retail Therapy Guide - 6/12/2020

In addition to our event and retail information for you, we have been working on a police news newsletter that brings you up to speed on the developments that happened in anti-racism and police brutality in Beacon this week. That will get delivered tomorrow.

This weekend is the Phase 2 Reopening weekend. Which is on the one hand exciting (yay, stay in business! yay, see your friends!) is also one that comes with caution because the virus is still getting people sick. Even at A Little Beacon Blog, we each feel varying degrees of caution and develop our own safety plans of what feels safe or responsible to us. As you are too.

Even though we want to jump up and down for joy, we're taking the road of: "Just be careful." Businesses are starting to let customers in their doors - with new safety measures of course and limited capacity. Restaurants are getting creative with their outdoor dining options, barbershops and salons are booking appointments, and places of worship can re-open at 25% capacity

Whether you're dining out, shopping, or protesting - social distancing is still recommended as we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Don't leave home this weekend without your masks or face coverings! Businesses have the right to not allow you inside without them - just think of it like "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" only add masks to that too. Don't like your face mask? No problem! Start your collection by checking out our list of where you can buy masks from mask makers in Beacon and around the area.

PS: Oregon just paused their Reopening because their number of daily new infections got too high, and those Californians just really don't care that their numbers keep climbing! Stay safe, and keep the curve flat so that we can continue to make this Reopening happen and stay open :)

PTACEK HOME

Sad news from PTACEK Home: "After much deliberation, we have decided to close our Beacon location of Ptacek Home. For now, we will be focusing our time on our custom home building company:
Thomas Jerome Inc. www.thomasjeromeinc.com."

A Protest, Happening This Weekend, And The Retail Therapy Guide - 6/5/2020

That's right folks...An old phrase has been added to our subject line: "Happening" Because things are Happening! This week was a big week. And it's not over yet.

Last Saturday: A gentle protest was held in Beacon by Southern Dutchess Resist.
Details >

Monday: A large peaceful protest was organized by these young people: Xavier Mayo, Ciarda Hall, and Stefon Seward was held in Beacon. Police provided an escort by way of moving street closure for protection, and two of Beacon's highest ranking police officers were granted permission to join. A Little Beacon Blog was there and covered it. See this article to get a feel for the experience, watch 2 videos of chanting in the beginning, and 1 video of the entire march, from inside the march. This article includes responses from the Chief of Police Kevin Junjulas and Mayor Kyriacou to A Little Beacon Blog's questions.
Get The Story >

Tuesday: Tuesday turned into Blackout Tuesday. With many white people learning and unlearning themselves, and black people asking white people to speak, there was a lot of words and social media flying around. This became a day of silence and reflection. A Little Beacon Blog was honored to get a call by Terry Nelson, Beacon's City Councilmember for Ward 1. He was at the march, and we reached out to fact check his daughter's name for an article. We came away with an incredible interview with Terry's experience when a member of the NYPD  putting a gun to his face when he was 17, and how he lives as a black man in America today.
Details >

Wednesday: Wednesday turned into a day of heaviness. When the reflection started, and vital sharing continued, many black and brown friends released their personal experiences of growing up black in America, and they were very sad and tired. Tired because they have been living with this for all of their years as a normal part of their lives, and now, some white people, were finally beginning to hear and see it. You may have received business emails from black owned businesses who don't normally talk about race in their marketing material, but on this day, they did.
Also on this day, Beacon's Patrolmans Benevolent Association issued a letter in response to George Floyd's killing. Signed by Officer Michael Confield, they referred to the death as an "unconscionable death."

Thursday: By now, peaceful protests had happened in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie, where both police chiefs (Newburgh's has an Officer In Charge as they are in transition after their chief resigned last month after a riot was sparked after an armed black man was fatally shot by police) kneeled with protestors.

Friday: That's today! See below for what's in store...
PS: Yes, we have started a comprehensive list of black owned businesses in the Hudson Valley and we wanted to release it to you today, but it's still being formatted and linked up.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 5/29/2020

Today is Friday. At the time of this writing (9am) a black reporter and the production crew filming him has been arrested by 6am, and later released (CNN's Omar Jimenez). The president has been neutered on Twitter for glorifying violence with a "looting and shooting" part of the tweet that was hidden. Debates on censorship and safety for humans between person to person contact as fueled by race and racism are happening all at once and very quickly (to see how we really feel about censorship of privately held social media companies, visit ALBB's sister company, Tin Shingle).

Safety is also being debated about (sad that the word "also" just slipped into there) about protecting one's self from a virus that you can't see. Writing about these different concepts happening at the same time is extremely difficult.

As it is to live it - on a sunny day on the weekend - as we slide into the first weekend of the Phase 1 opening, where we are jubilant with hope of doing old "normal" things like seeing each other easily out on Main Street glimmers into our minds.

Stay safe out there, as we learn the new normal as it gets developed.

TIN SHINGLE

Tin Shingle Members get to watch this interview with a person such as you, Patty Carey, who lost sight of her writing dreams when her career in Location Managing in New York City took over her life. The Retail Therapy Guide - 5/15/2020

It's Reopening Day today in New York State! That brings mixed feelings for different people, but we know this: you need a face covering when you venture out to that gardening center, golf course (already has been open, sans bathrooms or food), or drive-in movie theater.

And you need more than one face covering. A Little Beacon Blog has started our list of local recommendations - who is sewing and making local. See our Face Mask Gift Guide here.

If you are making and selling dynamite masks, we want to know about it. Please contact us with details on how to purchase. We know that there is an army of Makers who have been strictly making for the front lines. Now that the public is mandated to wear them when 6' social distancing is not possible, we want to help people feel proud and confident in their mask fashion.

PS: See how Beacon's floral shops, who need to remain closed because they are Retail, are still getting flowers to you.

The Retail Therapy Guide - 5/82020

This Mother's Day Edition of the Retail Therapy Guide is dedicated to a mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, who lost her son, Ahmaud Arbery, when he was shot and killed while out jogging. If you have not seen the now famous video that shows it, you can watch it here. Ahmaud was the baby of 3 children. He was an avid runner and football player. His birthday was today. Many runners today dedicated their runs to him using #irunwithmaud to further bring attention to the case. If you have not watched the video yet, you should reconsider and watch it.
