NY State Lifts Mask Mandate For Schools; Beacon City Schools Agree; Dutchess County Agrees

The robo-call came in on Sunday afternoon, while Beaconites were out doing things like going to Bounce! or grocery shopping, from Beacon’s Superintendent Landahl letting district families know that New York’s Governor Hochul had made her decision on the mask mandate. “After consulting with health and education experts, as well as parents, teachers and school administrators,” Governor Hochul explained that she was comfortable lifting the mask mandate for school children due to more New Yorkers getting vaccinated and a steady decline over the past several weeks in cases and hospitalizations from Omicron, on March 2nd.

Dr. Landahl robo-called to say that he agreed, and supported anyone’s decision to continue to wear a mask stating: “We also fully support staff or students who want to continue to wear masks. It has been a long 2 years for all of us and I want to take a moment to thank all of our staff for their tireless efforts over this difficult time. I want to thank our families for their incredible levels of patience and flexibility. Finally, I want to thank our students for their perseverance and leadership during this time.”

Some middle school students who prefer masks, voiced skepticism at the announcement. One student worried about their non-vaccinated friends. Another student made predictions about who would be taking their mask down right away, presumably based on what their parents wanted them to do, the student said. Both students expressed relief at being able to remove the mask when they wanted to, especially during gym class.

The Metrics Behind The Mandate Lift

Governor Hochul said that her decision “follows recent changes in metrics used by the CDC to determine risk and transmission levels in communities. Other mitigation measures should remain in place.”

“Among large states, New York has the highest rate of adults fully vaccinated for COVID-19,” Governor Hochul explained. “The highest rate of teenagers fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and the 2nd-highest rate of children ages 5-11 fully vaccinated. New York State has experienced a 98% decline in COVID-19 cases since the Omicron peak, and a continuous downward trend in cases for 51 consecutive days.”

Vaccination clinics continue to be hosted, and New York State established 261 vaccination sites for kids so far. Attention will need to continue to be paid to vaccination requirements as efficacy rates are measured over time. Long haul COVID-19 remains a factor, with unknown symptoms potentially lingering.

"With more New Yorkers getting vaccinated, and the steady decline over the past several weeks in cases and hospitalizations from Omicron, we are now entering a new phase of the pandemic. Because New Yorkers have stepped up, we can confidently remove the statewide mask requirement in our schools," Governor Hochul said. "This is a huge step forward for our kids and communities and I am grateful to the students, educators and parents for their dedication to keeping us all safe—we've reached this milestone because of your hard work."

Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro issued a statement on Sunday in response to the mask mandate lift, saying: “We welcome the end to mask requirements for our children later this week – and will take no action to require them locally.”

"Masks Down" For Now In Certain Indoor Areas; Beacon's Mayor Kyriacou Robo-Called To Say Respect Business' Decisions

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul announced today Wednesday that effective tomorrow, Thursday, February 10, 2022, the temporary indoor mask-or-vaccine mandate she enacted two months ago on December 10th, 2021 would be lifted, thanks to the pandemic trending in a good direction, thanks to adults getting vaccinated and boosted, and children beginning to get vaccinated. The Omicron variant seemed to have infected most everyone this winter, with the unvaccinated suffering the most, according to hospital stats in Dutchess County and around the country.

Counties, cities and businesses will be able to opt-in to the mask-or-vaccine requirement if they so choose. Schools will be assessed in March, though Superintendents in the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents sent a jointly signed a letter on 1/13/2022 to New York’s Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett urging the state to develop metrics for dropping the indoor masks, increase mental health services for students, and using PCR tests for the weekly testing of staff and students, as reported by LoHud.

Beacon City School District’s Superintendent Landhal told A Little Beacon Blog in January that the district is part of that group, but that he was not involved with writing the letter, saying he has been too busy. Dr. Landhal focuses on communicating directly with the community via regular robo-calls and emails about the changing requirements as they happen, to manage everyone’s expectations.

Masks Are Not Totally Done

In a nutshell, masks are not totally done, and the pandemic is not over. There is the BA.2 subvariant being watched in Denmark, India, South Africa, and other countries including the United States and Europe, as reported by several national news outlets. Doctors continue to urge people to get vaccinated and boosted.

Governor Hochul stated that masks will still be required In hospitals, nursing homes, shelters, transportation and other related entities.

Businesses, Counties and Cities are able to decide for themselves on what they want to do. Beacon’s Mayor Kyriacou robo-called the community with Governor Hochul’s announcement the day she made it, and encouraged Beaconites to respect the decisions of businesses, should they choose to continue masking up. He did not indicate a community-wide policy for Beacon. The last time he robo-called was to announce the arrival and location of a 3rd distribution of COVID-19 test kits. No call came for the 1st and 2nd distributions.

Dutchess County Executive Molinaro has been advocating for the indoor mask requirement to be lifted, and today issued a statement prior to Governor Hochul’s announcement, stating: “As Governor Hochul ponders lifting the mask mandate in New York, as so many other states have already announced, it must be done across the board, including in our schools and daycares. We know there is harm to our youngest learners, particularly those with disabilities, when forced to mask all day. As we move forward, rather than continued restrictions, we must aggressively open access to treatment and interventions to help those who do contract COVID recover quickly and fully.”

While the Governor maintained the indoor mandate for kids in school, she said it would be reevaluated in early march, after Mid-Winter break, based on public health data. As children as young as 4 have been conditioned to wear the mask, and feel comfortable in it, an effort of unconditioning their mindset in the current low-case environment would be needed for some who feel comfortable and safe wearing it, rather than ripping it off like a bandaid (though some kids would probably toss it in the air like a graduation cap).

According to Governor Hochul’s February 9, 2022 COVID Update, only 38% of kids aged 5-11 have been vaccinated with one dose. Thanks to volunteers, the Beacon City School District continues to hold vaccination clinics at its buildings. New York State is actively preparing for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to come online for children under 5 years old, according to Governor Hochul’s press release.

Vaccinations Continue To Be The #1 Way To Fight The Virus And Keep It At Bay

Governor Hochul announced today a “Winter Toolkit” that will focus on continuing to fight the virus. Included in it are 5 core areas:

  • Protecting the most vulnerable New Yorkers.

  • Increasing vaccinations and boosters.

  • Strengthening our health care system.

  • Empowering local leaders.

  • Supporting individuals facing the long-term effects of COVID.

According to New York State’s press release: “New York State's mass vaccination and testing sites will remain open to ensure all eligible New Yorkers can access first, second, and third doses for themselves and their children.

“The State's #VaxForKids pop-up programming continues to expand with 63 new sites established today and 193 sites established to date. This effort brings the vaccine directly to parents, guardians, and their children at local schools, community centers, and destinations like farmer's markets to make getting vaccinated convenient and accessible for families.”

The COVID Numbers Are Trending Down In New York

According to Governor Hochul’s report, the 7 day average % positivity is going down. As of 2/8/2022, it was 3.67%. During the height of Omicron, it was 23.2% and nearly breaking the Dutchess County Dashboard. Today, the number of Active Cases in Dutchess County is 394, which is a lot lower than the 6,000+ it was during January 2022. In Beacon, the Active Case count is 16, also a relatively good number, as Beacon broke 100 in January. However, the Percent Positive for every 100,000 in Dutchess County is 22.47% which is high. In the Beacon City School District, case numbers have been much lower than the 20+ per day of positive students or staff we saw in January, and are down to the single digits.

For Now.

Like with the first time the mask mandate came down, all of this is dependent upon people getting vaccinated, surviving their case of COVID-19, and evolving with the virus. Protests like the truck situation in Ottawa Canada that has shut down an economy supply chain route is hurting people and the economy further.

You’ll need to continue bringing your mask with you on errands, as you respect (and not throw shade on) the decisions of individual businesses.

Beacon City School's "Test To Stay" Program - How It Works - Governor Says Tests Might Come Home In Backpacks In Future

Beacon City School District’s Test To Stay (TTS) COVID-19 program started the week ending in December 10, 2021, as announced by Superintendent Landahl in his weekly Superintendent Update email. This is a voluntary program that requires parents consent for their child’s participation to get tested for COVID-19 if they are exposed to a person with a positive result.

In that announcement, Dr. Landahl stated that after the Winter Break, the district plans to make rapid testing available for a limited number of students outside of the quarantine process. Governor Kathy Hochul indicated in her Winter Surge Plan announcement on 12/20/2021 that with the expansion of tests to districts, that might be possible. At the encouragement of the Governor, President Biden has authorized the Defense Production Act to make more tests.

This [quarantine after exposure] is so disruptive to their education, as well as the parents, who’ve been desperately trying to get back to a normal life, get back to their jobs. And the lack of childcare has been, just another area of friction for these families that have been really hit so hard.
— Governor Kathy Hochul

If a student or staff is identified in a contact tracing map from a student or staff who tests positive for COVID-19, the people in the contact tracing chain may be eligible to test each morning of their quarantine period with rapid COVID-19 tests provided to the Beacon City School District by New York State, via Dutchess County. In order to attend school for that day (does not include extra curriculars and sports at this time). This is at no cost to the district.

Said Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro on 12/17/2021 in support of the program, as he wrote a letter encouraging Governor Hochul to provide additional funding to the program: “Dutchess County has continually demonstrated our commitment to supporting safe, in-person education through layered mitigation strategies and has assisted local school districts with logistical challenges associated with getting their TTS programs started.

“While the program is not without complications, the value of the approach is unimpeachable. Thanks to TTS, hundreds of Dutchess County students have already benefited from the ability to stay in school, without unnecessary disruption of quarantine following an exposure. This school year has prompted repeated exposures and TTS has provided a vital, safe alternative to having students sit at home with little to no educational enrichment.

“Importantly, TTS also provides increased information about the health status of exposed students by effectively creating a targeted surveillance testing program where parental consent is more easily attained.“

Governor Hochul outlined in her Winter Surge Plan announced on 12/20/2021 that the Test To Stay program would remain funded, and receive additional tools. She outlined her philosophy in her speech on how the program will continue to work:

“Children are in a classroom, someone tests positive. Ordinarily, they would have been sent home for a long period of time. And then even if someone - they go back - someone tests positive again, the next week they're sent home again. This is so disruptive to their education, as well as the parents, who've been desperately trying to get back to a normal life, get back to their jobs. And the lack of childcare has been, just another area of friction for these families that have been really hit so hard.

“So, we'll be making sure that there's, in their backpacks, they will be sent home with testing kits. Children test positive, we know it, someone in the classroom, the kids in the classroom will be sent home with testing kits. So, we're working on that supply chain right now. So starting in early January, we will be able to address that. So there's no reason why our children can’t stay in school. Really important to me. Also, talking about education, we've been in contact with the leaders of our higher education institutions, our SUNY school presidents and our private school presidents. And we're convening a symposium of those leaders to talk about getting back our college students when they return under normal circumstances a little bit later in January and making sure they follow the same return protocols.

“We don't have that disruption again to their education and what the professors and teachers and they had to go through, but also the economic impact, many of our college campuses typically upstate or in small towns, that is the livelihood of their economy. Having those students in person. So, for a number of reasons, it goes to my philosophy of protecting the health of individuals, protecting the health of New Yorkers, as well as protecting the health of the economy.”

How Test To Stay Works For Beacon City School Students

The following information is from the school nurse sent to a parent of a student identified in a contact tracing map.

The Test To Stay program is optional for district students to participate in, and must have parent consent. The district is working with Dr. Neal Smoller for administration of the shots (as well as optional pediatric vaccinations during pop-up clinics). Those who choose not to participate in the Test To Stay program will keep their child home for the quarantine period prescribed to them by the school nurse. Those students will remain in the district’s Fully Remote (FRT) status for the duration of the quarantine.

Based on experiences of parents who had children identified in contact tracing, when the child is identified in a contact tracing map, the school nurse will call the parents or caregivers to find out more information. Depending on when and if the child was vaccinated will contribute to if the child is eligible to Test To Stay. For instance, if the child received their second vaccination shot one week prior to being exposed, they are considered not fully vaccinated yet (as the body is still working on building up resistance to the virus) and the child is eligible for the Test To Stay program.

However, If the child is not symptomatic, and considered fully vaccinated based on the length of time since their second shot, then the nurse might not recommend Test To Stay, and may also not recommend a 10 day quarantine. This is the experience one parent had when their child was exposed twice in one week and identified in two different contact tracing maps. The child was able to return to school without testing, and without quarantining.

As of now, testing is between 7am-8:45am at the Beacon High School Community Room There will be a nurse there to test the student. Students and their caregiver will have to wait for about 15 minutes in their car or outside. If the child is positive, the nurse will call the caregiver. If the child is negative, no phone call will be made, and the child can go to school.

This is to be repeated daily for the length of the prescribed quarantine period.

Those who choose the TTS option and get a negative result are not lifted out of quarantine completely, only for the school day and no extra curricular activities may be participated in. During recent Board of Education meetings, Beacon’s Superintendent Landahl has expressed that he does not understand this logic, but is honoring this requirement from New York State.

The test must be done daily prior to each school day up until the 7th day after possible exposure. The student must be brought to school (no bus transportation to school prior to the test) for the test. After testing negative and attending school for the day, the student may take the bus home for that day.

Testing Out Of Quarantine Completely After 7th Day

As of now (12/23/2021), a second layer of testing out is added to this equation. From the letter sent by the school nurse to a parent whose child was identified in contact tracing and eligible for Test To Stay:

“Choosing the TTS option also allows you to have your student test out of their quarantine completely after their 7th day of possible exposure.”

Steps to Test out of Quarantine

  • Get a COVID-19 test on day 5 or later of quarantine. Rapid & PCR tests accepted.

  • Upon receiving a negative test result, immediately send the result to TestOut@dutchessny.gov.

  • Wait for a release from a quarantine letter from the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health. Letter turn around is usually 24 hours from submission. Note, it may take up to 36 hours during non business hours (weekends).

  • Quarantine ends after day 7 or later with a release from the quarantine letter. However, if you do not have the release letter you must continue to quarantine through day 10.

  • Continue monitoring for symptoms through day 14

  • For assistance call the COVID-19 information line at 845-486-3555.

This process is not for Test To Stay for daily school attendance. It is for lifting quarantine completely after the 7th day to do extra curricular actives.

Active Cases Of COVID-19 High At Holiday Time - 1,487 (almost double the summer high of 800s)

In case you hadn’t checked he Dutchess County COVID-19 Dashboard lately, the number of Active Cases of the virus has almost doubled since the summer, when alarm bells were sounding and mask recommendations were coming back. The number of Active Cases in Dutchess County as of today is 1,487 with a percentage of 6.02%, which is comparatively a higher percentage than officials have been comfortable with.

There are currently 68 hospitalizations, which is a relatively high number for Dutchess County. As for Active Cases in Beacon, there are 65. Again, a high number historically for Beacon. In East Fishkill, there are 213.

A Beaconite’s Experience Testing Positive

A family of 4 who got COVID-19 a few weeks ago (two vaccinated adults who were not boosted yet and two children under age 11 who had not received vaccination yet) took a home test to confirm results. They called Dutchess County to report in the numbers, and were told by Dutchess County that the county would not be counting them in the Dashboard. The reasoning, the Beaconite says the county representative gave them, was because the diagnosis may limit what kind of medical attention they could seek, aside from the ER. Unclear why that recommendation was made, since telehealth appointments are available when one has COVID-19, and prescriptions can be delivered by local pharmacies like Vogel or Beacon Wellness. Unless Dutchess County is referring to unrelated medical appointments, in which case that would indicate that the county may be OK with people testing positive visiting medical centers in an active state of COVID-19.

That means this family of 4 would not be in Beacon’s count.

State Of Active Cases In Beacon City Schools

Active cases of students and staff in the Beacon City School District continues daily, with about 6-8 cases reported to district families each day. Beacon has not shut down schools, but does contact trace people connected to those who test positive. According to one family of a student who was in the contact tracing lineage twice in the same week by two different exposures, and who is vaccinated and was not showing symptoms, the district advised them not to get tested. The Beacon City School District does offer the Test To Stay Program, which provides free rapid testing to those needing to quarantine, to let them return to school sooner. The free testing kit program is federally funded and administered through Dutchess County.

A few weeks before Governor Hochul declared her indoor mask mandate for all spaces that do not require proof of vaccination, Board of Education Member Anthony White asked to have a consideration about reducing the mask mandate in schools during a recent Board of Education Meeting. The current mask mandate in schools remains, and is a New York State requirement, as Beacon’s Superintendent commonly reminds parents and teachers who are against the mask mandate and present their opinions during Board of Education meetings.

How Is Dutchess County Responding To The Governor’s Renewed Mask Mandate?

Dutchess County is not enforcing Governor Hoschul’s mask mandate, as reported by the Highlands Current. Nor is Putnam County (Cold Spring). Both County Executives are Republican. According to the article, Molinaro said on Facebook that the “requirement is ‘unenforceable’ and ‘will become confrontational.’ The county will not ‘escalate tension or conflict or further burden our local small businesses.’” Dutchess County continues to promote vaccine and booster clinics, in addition to testing locations. Follow their Facebook page for notices.

According to the Highlands Current: “New York reported 18,000 new cases on Wednesday (Dec. 15), nearly 9x the 2,143 from Aug. 1. Although upstate counties are seeing the most infections, cases have also increased significantly in Dutchess, Putnam and other Mid-Hudson counties as the cold weather drives people indoors. Dutchess County’s 231 cases on Wednesday was its highest one-day total since Jan. 11, and Putnam County’s 84 cases on Dec. 10 its highest tally since Jan. 23.”

COVID-19 In Sports

The NFL is having an outbreak, despite it’s apparent 95% vaccination rate. Unknown if that statistic includes any recent boosters that need administered. According to a Washington Post article, a majority of players testing positive are asymptomatic.

Booster Cycles

The Beacon City School District has offered a second vaccination clinic, which offers pediatric vaccinations and boosters for those on cycle.

To learn where to get a booster for yourself, visit vaccines.gov and type in your zip code for an easy and local location. Beacon Wellness and Drug World in Cold Spring are locally owned vaccination locations. Sun River Health on Henry Street is also offering, as is Walmart and other big stores.

Easy Local COVID Vaccination Drugstore For 5-11 Kids, Older Kids, and Adults - Plus Shopping For Prizes!

The little pharmacy in Cold Spring - Drug World - has been on the hunt to provide COVID-19 vaccinations to the area since the vaccination for adults first became available. The Highlands Current covered the behind-the-scenes in what was required to administer the vaccine in their article “Drug World Chases COVID Vaccine.” This, followed by a letter from a reader, “Thanks To Drug World” which described what owner Heidi Snyder did to secure doses and partnered with Mark Snyder and Father Steve Schunk from St. Mary’s Episcopal Church to organize a team of community volunteers to administer it, according to a letter from John and Eva Humbach, followed by several other letters of support published in the newspaper.

Soon after the child’s dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for kids ages 5-11 became available, Drug World secured doses and made scheduling available on their website. Drug World’s website is also connected to the national database of vaccination locations, called Vaccines.gov, an easy to use online tool filtered by zip code, age and vaccination brand to book a vaccination for any available age.

Locations that do not have online booking do offer a phone number to call, or directions on if walk-ins are accepted. In Beacon, for instance, the new local pharmacy Beacon Wellness Pharmacy with the black and white awning across from Rite Aid offers the flu vaccination for walk-ins, and needs an appointment made online for the COVID-19 vaccination. The kids ages 5-11 will be available soon at Beacon Wellness Pharmacy, said the owner Enrique Reynoso, RPH, M.B.A., BCMTMS (review to come of Beacon Wellness Pharmacy’s shopping selection! we totally shopped it while flu-shotting).

Benefits Of Going Local Pharmacy - Shopping!

At any pharmacy, you are going to find a shopping selection. If you know A Little Beacon Blog, you know we love a good drug store and hardware store. Drug World did not disappoint Their Hanukkah selection is front and center at the front doors, while inside, there is a well curated selection of designer band-aids, coveted poppet stress toys (they are the new fidget-spinner and are all the rage on Tik Tok - kids collect them), and even picture frames! COVID Cases In Beacon Kids Ticks Up - District Offered Vaccination Clinic - Use Vaccines.gov To Easily Find Vaccination Appointments

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul is recommending for people to use Vaccines.gov, which has an easy-to-use vaccination finder for all age groups and brands of COVID-19 vaccination.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, and winter starts sending people indoors more, the predicted increase in cases has happened, including in children. According to a report released by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the number of children infected by COVID-19 used to average 16.9% of total cumulated cases. For the week ending November 18, that percentage rose to 25.1%

From American Academy of Pediatrics 11/18/2021:

As of November 18, almost 6.8 million children have tested positive for COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic. This week nearly 142,000 child cases were added, an increase of about 32% from two weeks ago. Child cases have declined since a peak of 252,000 the week of September 2nd, but COVID cases among children remain extremely high. For the 15th week in a row child COVID-19 cases are above 100,000. Since the first week of September, there have been over 1.7 million additional child cases.

The age distribution of reported COVID-19 cases was provided on the health department websites of 49 states, New York City, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Since the pandemic began, children represented 16.9% of total cumulated cases. For the week ending November 18, children were 25.1% of reported weekly COVID-19 cases (children, under age 18, make up 22.2% of the US population).

In Beacon, that increase seemed to correlate. As with other schools in other districts and states, parents receive emails from the districts stating if there are new confirmed cases in which schools. The Beacon City School District (BCSD) Matt Landahl emailed parents each day - sometimes twice a day - that new cases were confirmed to be within the district. In each email, he specified the number of confirmed cases within each school, and that individuals have been or will be notified to quarantine. Beacon has 4 elementary schools, 1 middle and 1 high school.

In mid-November, the number of confirmed cases in the BCSD increased. The list of dates and confirmed cases has been posted in this article to the right, which are based on confirmed case notification emails from Dr. Landahl. These show that on November 16, numbers of confirmed cases were doubling.

UPDATE 12/2/2021: A sentence in the above paragraph has been edited to just say “confirmed cases.” Dr. Landahl sends the number of confirmed cases, which could be children or adult staff working in the school buildings.

On Monday and Tuesday before Thanksgiving (November 22nd and 23rd, 2021) the there was a district-wide early dismissal for parent/teacher conferences. Thanksgiving break began on Wednesday, November 24th. Everyone will return on Monday November 29th, 2021.

Vaccination Clinic Hosted By BCSD A Success

Days after the vaccination for kids ages 5-11 was approved, the BCSD organized a vaccination clinic in order to provide easy access to parents and children in a familiar environment: the Beacon High School. Organized by Deputy Superintendent Ann Marie Quartironi in partnership with Village Apothecary who administered the shots (see the Village Apothecary’s list of upcoming vaccination clinics).

In terms of shots administered at those clinics, Dr. Landahl shared data with ALBB that over the course of both clinics (November 9th and 10th): 278 pediatric doses were given, and 106 boosters were given.

Another BCSD hosted vaccination clinic is not scheduled yet, but several other regular locations are available to people, including Walmart in Fishkill, Drug World in Cold Spring, and others. Visit Vaccines.gov to find locations by zip code and schedule an appointment. Insurance is not needed, but may be asked for, but is not required.

Easy Vaccination Appointment-Finder

New York’s Governor Kathy Hochul is recommending for people to use Vaccines.gov, which has an easy-to-use vaccination finder for all age groups and brands of COVID-19 vaccination.

If people would like schools and businesses to stay open, then those people should get vaccinated, and boosted. Expect to get boosted on the regular.

The Beacon City School District has guidelines in place to keep kids and staff safe while in school together, and sends notifications quickly when vaccination clinics are available nearby, in addition to what can be found at Vaccines.gov.

So far for the 2021/2022 school year, the district has not closed any schools in the name of mass quarantining, and instead works diligently to contact trace individuals who may have been in contact with those who tested positive for COVID-19. Those people go into their own quarantine schedule.

The New Omicron COVID-19 Variant

On the Friday after Thanksgiving, a new variant emerging in South Africa was declared to be of concern as it is studied. It is has been named Omicron. Part of why Omicron is of concern is because of how many other mutations it produces. Watch the video below from the a South African epidemiologist, Salim Abdool Karim as he explains how Omicron works, as they know it so far.

Governor Hochul has declared a State of Emergency in New York State in preparation for Omicron to come to this state, which for the “surge and flex system” to go into effect, which can halt or limit non-essential or non-urgent hospital procedures.

Governor Hochul said: "The vaccine remains one of our greatest weapons in fighting the pandemic, and I encourage every New Yorker to get vaccinated, and get the booster if you're fully vaccinated."

The Roundhouse Requires Proof Of Vaccination At Restaurant, Outdoor Patio Or Lounge

Announced late in September to prepare people, The Roundhouse in Beacon is requiring proof of vaccination against COVID-19. Published at their Facebook page:

“At The Roundhouse we are dedicated to providing a safe space for all to enjoy, and the safety of our guests and staff is our top priority. "As of October 7th, all adults and children 12 and older must show proof of Covid 19 vaccination to dine in our restaurant, outdoor patio or lounge. Children under 12 that are not yet eligible for the vaccination may accompany a fully vaccinated adult.”

For private events in their other buildings, The Roundhouse has a COVID-19 Event Safety FAQ page that outlines how private events can work, which are in line with how some other event locations have been running.

The Roundhouse is not the only restaurant in Beacon to require vaccinations: Quinn’s is also requiring proof of vaccination. All restaurants, bars and gyms in New York City are requiring proof of vaccination, as is LA.

Stop The Internets - Quinn's Will Reopen, But With New Rules: Admission Price & Proof of Vaxx

The subject line of Quinn’s press release announcing their reopening (again) had a kicker at the end of it: “Joe McPhee 82nd Birthday Kicks Off Return of Live Music at Quinn's in Beacon NY (We Mean It This Time!)” Very cute and real, as everyone flows with the pandemic times.

Days before most people woke up to the raging Delta variant, Quinn’s had announced an aggressive lineup of long awaited jazz performances, including a clever “Joevember” themed month of November featuring musicians named Joe.

Shortly after that, Quinn’s announced a last call for a pause on their being open at all. In that time, the parklets (outside dining on the street) had been picked up, and their loyal customers began dreaming of ways to help them reopen.

This week’s reopening announcement will come with a sigh of relief, but it also comes with a new set of directions: live performances now require an admission price to enter; and there’s a new definition of getting carded - Quinn’s is carding for proof of vaccination. Masks will also be required for admission during all live performances.

Quinn’s will be open for food dining during non-performance days as well. Check with them for latest hours and days.

Quinn’s is the second restaurant (that we know of) to require proof of vaccination. The Roundhouse in Beacon has also imposed this rule, which begins today. All restaurants, bars and gyms in New York City are also requiring proof of vaccination, as are Broadway theaters. The Los Angeles City Council voted to require vaccinations for restaurants, bars, gyms, shopping centers, entertainment venues, and personal care establishments.

Normally, during a pause in a performance, band members go around the restaurant with a donation box, hoping people will give cash. With this new policy, performers are guaranteed a payment. Initiating the new policy, read the press release, “will be a celebration of the 82nd birthday of our dear friend, Hudson Valley legend and internationally recognized multi-instrumental titan, Joe McPhee (pictured above), on his actual birthday: Wednesday, November 3 at 8:30 PM. Admission for this very special event will be $20.”

The next performance will be the iconic Beacon punk band Ate Bit, with special guest Social Standards opening. Making it up as they go along (which is the beauty of running your own business), is a twist to “Joevember” with two musicians not named Joe scheduled to perform: Jessica Jones and Tony Jones on November 15th.

From the press release: “Highlights of Saturday night concerts include a devastating one-two punch from one of our favorite Beacon bands, Knock Yourself Out. First, on Second Saturday, November 13, we present KYO Surfers, featuring members of Knock Yourself Out, Dirt Bikes, and The Nighttimes performing songs by the infamous Texas psych-punk band Butthole Surfers — then, on Saturday, December 18, KYO bids us all farewell with their final performance, joined by special guest musicians Mimi Sun Longo, Daria Grace, Jonny Taylor, and Ken Fox. Other Saturday highlights include the bands 100 and Zero with opener Wall of Ego on November 20, and another Hudson Valley legend, DJ Bill Skillz, brings his Diggin' in the Crates Radio Roadshow back into Quinn's during Thanksgiving weekend on November 27.”

Only 56% Of Dutchess County Residents Are Fully Vaccinated; HHS Prepared To Roll Out Booster 8 Months From Initial Vaccination

only-56-percent-dutchess-county-fully-vaccinated-MAIN.png

As numbers and percentages continue to be the driving force of the pandemic used to justify decisions, there is one metric that has been quoted more often than its sibling metric: the percentage of the Dutchess County population 18+ who have received one of two vaccination doses (73.6% as of 8/28/2021), vs the percentage of people who have received two of the two doses of their vaccine (56.67%).

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released a joint statement with Medical Experts on August 18, 2021 including the CDC that stated their study of vaccinations wearing off and needing a booster shot. The statement did not detail if those who only had one dose of their vaccination were at greater risk for losing amounts of protection. The statement alluded to fully vaccinated people.

The HHS statement detailed: “The available data make very clear that protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection begins to decrease over time following the initial doses of vaccination, and in association with the dominance of the Delta variant, we are starting to see evidence of reduced protection against mild and moderate disease. Based on our latest assessment, the current protection against severe disease, hospitalization, and death could diminish in the months ahead, especially among those who are at higher risk or were vaccinated during the earlier phases of the vaccination rollout.”

Community Protection Is Key

The CDC stressed on July 27, 2021 that as long as the community was not fully vaccinated, reduced risk of transmission would be difficult: “A growing body of evidence indicates that people fully vaccinated with an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna) are less likely than unvaccinated persons to acquire SARS-CoV-2 or to transmit it to others. However, the risk for SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infection in fully vaccinated people cannot be completely eliminated as long as there is continued community transmission of the virus.

44% Of Dutchess County Not Fully Vaccinated

While it is important to celebrate the accomplishment of half the population of Dutchess County being fully vaccinated, 44% of people traveling throughout the county and into neighboring counties is a lot of people. People may assume that a friend of theirs is vaccinated, and may assume incorrectly. While some industries are requiring vaccinations in order to return to work, some employees are opting to work from home to avoid that mandate. Others, like this soap opera star who is openly against vaccinating, are one such example. As of today, actors are not required by their union to vaccinate in order to work on set with other vaccinated people.

The Booster Shot Preparation 8 Months After Initial Vaccine Series

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is preparing for all Americans get the 3rd shot booster, according to their August 19, 2021 statement. HHS stated that they are awaiting data for the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine, but anticipates that boosters will be needed for that group as well.

From their statement : “We have developed a plan to begin offering these booster shots this fall subject to FDA conducting an independent evaluation and determination of the safety and effectiveness of a third dose of the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines and CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) issuing booster dose recommendations based on a thorough review of the evidence. We are prepared to offer booster shots for all Americans beginning the week of September 20 and starting 8 months after an individual’s second dose. At that time, the individuals who were fully vaccinated earliest in the vaccination rollout, including many health care providers, nursing home residents, and other seniors, will likely be eligible for a booster. We would also begin efforts to deliver booster shots directly to residents of long-term care facilities at that time, given the distribution of vaccines to this population early in the vaccine rollout and the continued increased risk that COVID-19 poses to them.”

For example, if you got your full vaccination sequence with your second shot on April 27th 2021, you would get a third booster shot on or around December 27th. Which happens to be the one year anniversary date of this blogger’s quarantine release date from recovering from actual COVID-19! Would not wish the actual virus to be in anyone. See you in the booster shot line.

Majority Of Hospitalizations Are Non Or Partially-Vaccinated People

County Executive Marcus Molinaro offered new vaccinated segmented data on his Facebook Live update on Friday, August 27th, 2021. The County Executive’s Communication Director, Colleen Pillus, confirmed with ALBB this data:

Hospital Demographics 7-day average (8/15-8/21)
29 patients on average [in the hospital]
76% [people] partially or not vaccinated vs. 24% [people] fully vaccinated on average

The HHS and group of experts who signed the statement maintains that vaccinating is a highly recommended mode of protection, by elaborating: “Our top priority remains staying ahead of the virus and protecting the American people from COVID-19 with safe, effective, and long-lasting vaccines especially in the context of a constantly changing virus and epidemiologic landscape. We will continue to follow the science on a daily basis, and we are prepared to modify this plan should new data emerge that requires it.”

In terms of vaccinated vs unvaccinated, HHS continued: “We also want to emphasize the ongoing urgency of vaccinating the unvaccinated in the U.S. and around the world. Nearly all the cases of severe disease, hospitalization, and death continue to occur among those not yet vaccinated at all.”

As of August 28, 2021, there are 844 Active Cases of COVID-19 in Dutchess County. That is a 4.57% positivity rate, according to the Dutchess Dashboard, which changes daily.

To get vaccinated for the first time, visit the Dutchess County Vaccination page.

86% Of Hospitalized COVID-19 Cases In Dutchess County Are Non-Vaccinated People; Hospitalizations Rising - Hospitals Explain Why That Is Challenging Their System

molinaro-says-86-percent-hospitalizations-not-vaccinated-MAIN.png

On August 18th, 2021, days after Sullivan and Orange Counties issued public health alarms about the rise in COVID-19 cases due to the Delta variant, prompting them to put into place a preventative mask measure to slow the spread of COVID-19 in their regions, Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro delivered a video presentation via Facebook addressing the rise of cases over the summer a week after warnings in neighboring counties.

When last he gave a video presentation at the end of June 2021, there were 56 Active Cases in Dutchess County. By August 18th, 2021, just over a month later, there were 726. The number remains between 700-800 Active Cases today.

Those who are seeing more severe cases and are coming to a hospital setting are overwhelmingly not vaccinated.
— County Executive Marcus Molinaro

Currently, he reported, there are 60-93 new cases each day of COVID-19 in Dutchess County. Whereas before, in June, there were 1-4 new cases each day. “None of these data-points individually would cause us to sound an alarm,” he said. “But collectively, we want to monitor those things.” With press releases coming out of the County Executive’s Office weekly about accomplishments including monies designated for grants, a new mental health website, agricultural spotlights, etc., no press release was sent about this spike from 56 to 726 new Active COVID-19 Cases in Dutchess County from June to August.

After Sullivan County mandated that all people in county buildings must wear masks, and Orange County strongly recommended that all residents wear masks indoors, ALBB reached out to the County Executive’s office on August 16th to inquire if Dutchess County or their Health Department had made similar announcements, but received no reply. Days later on August 18th, Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro delivered his first COVID-19 update video. A week after that, the Dutchess County Commissioner of Behavioral and Community Health (DBCH), Dr. Anil Vaidian MD, resigned, thanking the county for the opportunity to have worked for them.

Positivity Rate Rises To 4.8% (August) From .28% (June)

"Today we are at a 4.8% positivity rate. Not a 'transmission rate' this is a 'positivity rate,’” County Executive Molinaro explained, and then continued to give a reference point: “At the end of June, we were at .28% transmission rate. We are now at 4.8%." ALBB has confirmed with the County Executive’s office that the quoted .28% transmission rate was indeed referencing the positivity rate.

86% Hospitalized With COVID-19 in Dutchess County Are Not Vaccinated; 77% of Active Cases Are Not Vaccinated

County Executive Molinaro released hospital data not included in the Dutchess Dashboard that presents tracked COVID-19 data, confirming that 86% of those hospitalized in Dutchess County are not vaccinated. "Those who are seeing more severe cases and are coming to a hospital setting are overwhelmingly not vaccinated."

As for Active Cases, according to the data collected by Dutchess County Contact Tracers, who personally call people with Active Cases to check in on them to learn about transmission patterns, 77% of people recovering from COVID-19 told Contact Tracers that they were not vaccinated, County Executive Molinaro said.

Hospitals In Dutchess County Are Concerned And Explain Why 28 COVID-19 Hospitalizations In 1 Month Is Too Much

Not every particular hospital room is built to contain an airborne virus of this kind. As those rooms fill up, hospitals have to use other rooms. As those rooms fill up, hospitals have to use other rooms. Use of those rooms might close down a whole floor.
— Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro

With 60-93 new Active Cases a day, and 8 new hospitalizations in a week, County Executive Molinaro exclaimed: “That is a pace that is of concern to all of us, in the public health world and in the health care world.” He went on to explain why the number of 28 hospitalizations in 1 month stresses the hospital system in Dutchess County, by explaining that not all hospital rooms are designed to entrap an airborn virus.

"The growth in hospitalization is what puts pressure on the health care system. There are several hundred beds that might be available in the region. That is true. Keep in mind that not every room in every hospital is protected in a way that would prevent an airborne virus - a virus that travels in the way that this does - to escape the room,” he stated. “Not every particular hospital room is built to contain an airborne virus of this kind. As those rooms fill up, hospitals have to use other rooms. Use of those rooms might close down a whole floor."

He went on to explain that hospitals have voiced concern: "Our health care providers - our hospitals - with whom we are on calls with every week - they have a level of concern about the transmission among individuals, visitors who come into the hospital, visitors to staff, and then those staff members have to isolate. Those become big challenges for health care providers."

As of 8/18/2021, in the last 10 days, 9 Dutchess County residents have lost their life to the virus, the County Executive said. “There are severe cases, and those severe cases are taking some lives." Later in the presentation, Molinaro said: "The severity of the cases have been on the incline.”

County Executive Molinaro ended with a push to get vaccinated, walking a middle line between encouragement and recommendation: "We encourage you to choose to get vaccinated. I hope that you will. We encourage you to get the answers to the questions you may have."

Where To Get Vaccinated In Beacon

Vaccinations are free, and available at the new Beacon Wellness Pharmacy on Main Street. An appointment is necessary to make on their website. Sun River Health on Henry Street is now vaccinating any person, not just current patients. Dutchess County is offering home services to those in need. Castle Point is offering a driving service for Veterans to be driven to an appointment, and is looking for volunteers to drive. Details for all of these locations is at the Dutchess County vaccination page.

2nd Doses Are Trending At JCPenney Vaccination Site In Dutchess County

vaccine-two-doses-fingers-MAIN.png

The Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccinations need 2 doses for maximum effectiveness. However, some Beaconites have questioned getting their 2nd dose, after getting pelted by any anti-vaxing friends in social media or text. That and, the semi-vaccinated might want to skip out on the expected symptoms. While India is begging for vaccines, and the world is pressuring the United States and the UK to release the vaccine patents so that the vaccine can be made more widely for greater accessibility, it seems silly to skip the 2nd dose of the vaccine.

How are we doing in Dutchess County? As of today 5/6/2021, 48.17% of Dutchess County has gotten at least one dose of any vaccine, according to the Dutchess County Tracker. If you’re one of those anti-vaxing people who is thinking “All you people are getting vaccinated, so I don’t need to,” then you can know that less than half of the population is not vaccinated, and that is not great for you. So check with your doctor on the best course for you, get a plan, and maybe get vaccinated!

Here is a snapshot view of people returning to the JCPenney vaccination location for their 2nd shot, as supplied to ALBB by Colleen T. Pillus, Communications Director, Dutchess County Executive Office. This is a snapshot of 2 vaccination events: one on February 11, 2021, and one on March 30, 2021.

February 11th at our JCPenney Fixed POD:
290 Moderna vaccine 1st doses were administered.
274 Moderna 2nd doses were administered at the corresponding 2nd dose clinic on March 11th.

March 30th at our JCPenney Fixed POD:
1294 Moderna vaccine 1st doses were administered.
1263 Moderna 2nd doses were administered at the corresponding 2nd dose clinic on April 27th.

That’s a pretty good 2nd dose rate. It’s not 100% as there is room to improve with increased accessibility, transportation and trust. Visit Dutchess County’s Vaccination website to book a pop-up or main location.

At each and every other event, the 2nd dose appointment is made when you are at your 1st appointment. There is no online booking and clamoring for a spot for the 2nd dose. You’re already in. Though it may involve a QR code. However, if you or your loved one has not the technology, there are volunteers on site who can make an appointment for you the old fashioned way - by typing it into a computer.

Pop-Ups Become Cool For Vaccine Appointments As Links Go Public

vaccine-community-popups-MAIN.png

VACCINE BOOKING FAQ

  • You’ll book your 2nd dose while at your 1st appointment. You don’t need to do this online.

  • Vaccines are free right now. Even if you don’t have health insurance.

  • Governor Cuomo signed legislation requiring NY Employers grant 4 paid hours to employees to get the vaccine. More info here.

  • If you think that not getting vaccinated is a good idea, your theory is playing out horrifically in India, Brazil and other areas with low vaccination rates. Countries are begging for vaccinations. Use yours.

Dutchess County has recently made their signup links for vaccine appointments public, meaning, people no longer need to wait to be emailed by the county for a slot to open up. People can visit Dutchess County’s Vaccination page for upcoming appointment opportunities. Some of the events are being called Pop-Up events, which are popular in shopping and retail, and now in getting vaccinated for COVID-19. Additionally, the brand of vaccine is indicated with the date, so you can pursue the brand you want if that is important to you.

This is a major shift in the process from where Dutchess County made appointments available for anyone eligible to sign up to (when there were higher age restrictions), and pivoted to an email list after signups disappeared within 5 minutes. Demand for the vaccine has waned in New York State, and Dutchess County has since made the appointment links open again, which is easier for people to access.

After publishing the article, “Governor Cuomo Continues To Skip Dutchess County As A NY State Partner Vaccination Site - Why That Matters,” a friend sent what was then an underground appointment link to a direct online signup website for Dutchess County’s JCPenney location at the New York State booking website. This was confusing, as Dutchess County was sending press releases to inform the media that Governor Cuomo would not add Dutchess County as a Partner Site, which he did not, but the booking software did reside on the New York State website.

To confirm how the direct link existed, ALBB reached out to Colleen T. Pillus, Communications Director for Dutchess County Executive Office to find out how a public link was possible, when Dutchess County still kept them behind a registration email. She confirmed that the county was balancing stress from the public, and keeping signups within the county.

“People from much further away would have booked. People found it exceptionally stressful and disconcerting,” Colleen said. “They asked us to be put on lists. We did the list. We send it out. We randomly pull, if we have 500 doses, we pull at least 500 names. People now are wonderfully getting vaccinated from other places, and we send out an email to let one know that the person is eligible and to use a link that you can book an appointment.”

The vaccination event that the underground link was connected to had filled slower than other events, Colleen told ALBB. “We will probably start transitioning to having links on the County website. We just don't know when we keep getting doses.”

One month later, and one vaccination pause and release later, Dutchess County has put direct links to vaccination event signups on their website. These include dates for Dutchess County’s mass vaccination sites, JCPenney store at the Poughkeepsie Galleria and at the former CVS, 3081 Route 22, Dover. According to Rep. Sean Patarick Maloney, vaccination enthusiasm has declined in New York State. ALBB has emailed his office for his source, and has not yet received the source of the data. Though his office has responded to ALBB’s requests for pictures of the event at JCPenney where he mentioned this stat. If you have this information, please submit.

The Dutchess County vaccination website also includes links to Community Pop-Up events in Beacon, Millerton, Beekman, and others. Some events offer walk-in availability. Still, other pop-up events that the Beacon School District learn about in Kingston or other locations have been shared by Beacon’s Superintendent.

An email from CareMount Medical, allowing existing patients to sign up for a vaccination, sent on 4/29/2021. However, the link is private and cannot be forwarded.

An email from CareMount Medical, allowing existing patients to sign up for a vaccination, sent on 4/29/2021. However, the link is private and cannot be forwarded.

Private locations still offer their own signup links, like Sun River Health Systems on Henry Street in Beacon (being a patient is not required). CareMount Medical is offering vaccinations, but to current patients only and continue to use “Do Not Forward” type links.

Technology exists to connect all of this, so that there can be one central page at the New York State level for everyone to click and book. Why centralizing this signup process has not happened is not clear.

I Got The Vaccination - How That Went (For COVID-19)

i-got-the-vaccination---how-that-went-MAIN.png

Friends who are considering the vaccination have asked me to write about my experience. Some feel severe push-back from their anti-vaccination friends, and they have their own questions. Therefore, I will write about my experience, if it helps anyone make a decision.

For the writing of this vaccination testimonial, which will be fully in the first person, I am playing Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” on repeat, as she was an investor in the Moderna vaccine, which was the one I happened to take.

I was hoping for the Pfiezer/BioNTech one, when I learned that two of its driving forces in development were a married Muslim couple who were Turkish living in Germany (reading about them from different media sources is fascinating, like the New York Times article who doesn’t mention they are Muslim until the end of the article by way of mentioning that they won the Mustafa Prize, or this one from the MuslimMirror who refers to them as “The 55-year old physician and his 53-year old wife” when the “wife,” Özlem Türeci, M.D., is a is a physician, immunologist, and cancer researcher.

Some Stats

To give you an idea on what kind of testimonial you are reading, here are my stats as they pertain to COVID-19 and vaccinations:

  • I have never taken the flu shot (based on no science, just my thoughts), though I did take the H1N1 vaccine because I was pregnant at the time and my doctor begged me to take it because of the complications from H1N1 to pregnant women and their fetuses. I had not given my children the flu shot until last year, after my son kept getting the flu so badly. The February 2020 version was the worst (I suspect it was COVID-19). They now will get the flu shot each year.

  • I get all other vaccinations.

  • I got COVID-19 in December 2020. It was a home-bound transmission.

  • I got antibodies! Test revealed that they were there.

  • I have asthma.

Social Pressures

My family was pretty concerned that I would not take COVID-19 jab, as they call it at the BBC, based on my flu shot tendency. My brother lovingly told me that my antibodies weren’t good enough. With a laugh, I told him I resented that statement, as I worked hard for those antibodies!

My sister and brother told me of a trend of women who were tending to not want to get vaccinated, perhaps due to gender-based medicine development that does not always look at how the female body will react. This was not a trend I wanted to be part of. I was fine with the COVID-19 vaccination. One stat that keeps me on board with it is the flu vs COVID-19 death rate, which pandemic-deniers held on to in the beginning of this pandemic, thinking COVID-19 not that bad.

Now that the data has been posted by the CDC, for the week of April 18, 2020, USA deaths involving the flu were 265. The number of COVID-19 deaths was 17,125. The week of April 3, 2021, USA deaths involving flu was 8. USA deaths involving COVID-19 was 2,350.

As for vaccine development in the same year as the virus it is trying to crush, I look at polio, and that rocky vaccine rollout, but remember that today, people generally don’t get polio because they are vaccinated. It used to be an every summer kind of thing, and kids had a good chance of getting paralyzed or dying. My grandmother got polio, and had bad arthritis ever since. I’ll be part of the group that tries for the vaccine.

My circle of friends are mostly ardent mask-wearers and waited with baited breath for the vaccination. They tend to do a lot of research of science (versus living through meme education - as much as I love memes).

I knew I was going to get the vaccination. It was just a matter of when.

Qualifications Of Who Can Take The Vaccination And When

Qualifications of who can get the vaccine when added to the social divide that the pandemic has also revealed. A friend who is Puerto Rican was getting their vaccination during the time of 50+ age group, which gave them the green light to get vaxxed. At the vaccination event, an elderly gentleman in line questioned my friend, stating: “You don’t look old enough to be here.”

It was not said in a positive way, as volunteers managing the vaccination event quickly approached the elderly man, stating an excuse for him that he is a Veteran and had been giving others trouble as well. Both the Puerto Rican friend, and another couple who was African American who he had also offended, had moved away from the gentleman, who was privileged enough to be able to stay where he was, while those around him did not want to be party to escalation.

Conspiracy Theories Scaring People About The Vaccination

I don’t understand the theories, especially the Bill Gates ones. That guy - and all of the tech giants - have had our data for quite some time. When the school lockdown happened, some parents were very afraid of Bill Gates taking over at that point. So far, no Bill Gates is in our Remote Learning, and we are still in Google Classrooms and Meets and on Google Chrome Books (Google is not owned by Bill Gates, and he’s probably always been jealous of Google and Apple). It’s Zoom safety I worry about! Which is totally different. I stick with GoToWebinar.

I can cook up a few good conspiracy theories, too. And do have some regarding the start of this entire pandemic, but none that influence the benefits of a world-wide vaccination. I’m in for the vaccination.

I think of India who lost control of the pandemic due in part to low vaccination rates, and other countries who are begging for vaccinations from other nations.

When To Get The Vaccination

While I am in the media, technically, I could have gotten it a little sooner. But I wasn’t comfortable doing so, with all of the emphasis on the vulnerable populations. This gave me time (an excuse) to wait. Wait to see how it was playing out in others. Which is a selfish position, being that we are all in this together, uncertain. It’s not like pandemics happen all of the time. Every one hundred years or so.

A friend who teaches part time at a college suddenly got an alert that they could get a shot. “Shall we make your appointment?” they asked. My friend froze - now confronted with the choice. This friend also was banking on more time to wait as they made up their mind, and as the qualifications blocked so many from getting vaccinated.

I had another reason (excuse) to wait - the daunting task of getting an appointment. Thanks to Vaccine Angles, ALBB readers got the directions on how to do book appointments using OCD! But I wasn’t about to start. Until…

Finding The Appointment - Underground Link Passed Via Text

My friend passed me a direct link to sign up with Dutchess County’s vaccine booker that my friend got from a friend, who got it from a friend, who got it from a friend. I never signed up with Dutchess County (had intended to, just hadn’t yet). When my friend passed me the link. This gave me no excuse but to sign up (I also pursued Dutchess County to ask why this easy link wasn’t made public, and that is a entirely different article). There were 118 slots left. I signed up myself and my husband, who is over 50. That day, people over 30 became “qualified.” I also qualified because of asthma and being in the media. I passed the link to another friend, but I don’t know if they pursued.

The Buddy System - Texting Buddies During Symptoms

During my actual COVID-19 episode, I was so grateful to be able to text close friends my symptoms as they happened. Friends and family would reach out, which made me feel safe. The friend who passed me the underground vaccination link had also signed up for the same event, so we were vaccinated on the same day. We stayed in text touch throughout, stating the different symptoms we were feeling.

My friend fully expected to be wiped out and got ready for bed, but was up all night. I ended up sleeping that night, but was jumpy the next day, and literally ran up and down my driveway to get my wiggles out. On the second vaccination shot, my friend was thoroughly wiped out, and took to the bed covers on the beautiful spring day we had this week to sleep away the fever.

Anti-Vax Buddies Who Do Not Support

Reports from 2 friends stated their their anti-vaccination friends went on the aggressive to convince them to not vaccinate. One friend stated that they were afraid to tell their anti-vax friend (this friend also would not get tested in order to travel out of state, back when the state-border lockdown was happening). After my friend confessed that she was getting her 2nd shot - which was her first confession of getting vaccinated at all - the anti-vaxx friend took to social media posting all of their own thoughts not based on science.

That friend has since calmed down, and the two of them went on a friend-date with a third friend. The third friend was vaccinated, and those “I’m vaccinated” statements went around before masks came down. The anti-vaxx friend stated that they had COVID-19 in the past and were all good. Which was a bold-face lie, as they had never even been tested, and refused tests. SMH.

My other friend was all signed up for an appointment, and told her friend the good news. That’s when this friend discovered that the other friend was an anti-vaxxer: “My friend turns out to have become an anti-vaxxer, and they sort of went nuts on me, and now I feel totally stressed out about it. Sorry to throw that at you, but I don’t know many people who are able to get the vaccine our age group yet, so I have to ask the people who already had it.” This was prior to the qualification dropping to 16+.

Symptoms During And After The 1st Vaccination Shot

My first shot wasn’t bad. My arm was completely stiff, and it just made me mindful of arthritis, that I needed to keep moving like I would in physical therapy if I needed mobility in the shoulder. It worked. Little movement to the shoulder throughout the day was all it needed.

Days prior to the first shot, my asthma was active for spring. During jogging sessions, I wanted my inhaler. After my shot, I had ghost feelings of my chest tightening, like I did during my real COVID-19 episode. After the vaccination got through my body, however, all of that went away. And my chest was actually more clear for a few weeks! I would go jogging and not need my inhaler.

My husband also got the shot when I did. He also had COVID-19 when I did. For the first vaccination, he had almost no reaction. Weeks later, however, a cyst that has been on his back for 20+ years got infected for the first time in decades. Coincidentally, he had a regularly scheduled appointment with his dermatologist, who declared that she had seen infections before with other people who had been vaccinated. She treated it with an antibiotic, and told him that she was still glad people were getting vaccinated. All is well with it.

Symptoms During And After The 2nd Vaccination Shot

I did pretty well, but I also had client meetings, so was up and prepared to be functioning. My body was sweating even if I was sitting still, so I wanted to move. I ended up running in the afternoon, to encourage the sweating (I love saunas and running in dry, hot weather!), and wow was I glad I was able to do that. Felt much better. But I was wiped out after. Ready for bed.

Even during the real COVID-19, my body craved outside fresh air. And stretching. Lots of stretching. After my run, however, my cramps kicked in, even though my cycle finished days prior. Perhaps that estrogen doing its good thing!

My texting-buddy friend fared worse. My friend was in bed with a 100 fever, saying “My whole body is one big cramp.” Lots of sleep later, and the symptoms were gone.

My husband also fared worse this round. He was super sweaty and had a fever of 100+ with Tylenol. I treated him with cold wash cloths while I fed the kids.

Public Health Messaging To Prepare For Expected Symptoms Of Vaccination

What has helped me take the COVID-19 vaccination was the amount of symptoms I was told to expect, both by public health professionals and friends via social media. Usually, people say with the flu: “I took the flu shot but I still got the flu.” Well, maybe you got symptoms of the flu to get it less. I will be taking the flu shot in the future.

As for known symptoms of COVID-19 that also appear in the vaccination - like blood clotting - these are important factors to talk to you doctor about and develop a plan. Research may still be coming as to what people with known conditions should do with regard to the vaccination. Multiple talks with your doctor would be wise.

Any Time I Doubt Precautions Like The Vaccination, I Think Of India, Brazil, Italy, New York in March-May

Fortunately, loved ones immediately around me are in good condition during this pandemic. Neighbors do not all have this situation. Beacon Councilperson Air Nonken Rhodes speaks frequently and frankly and with concern about the risks, mentioning when their neighbors are sick with COVDI-19, and how two of them in Beacon have died so far.

The news in India, with the crematoriums that are themselves melting from overuse, is just too heavy to bear. Why anyone would ignore these conditions happening around the world is beyond me. For those who want to leave everything to eating good and local food - how do you explain India? How do you explain Brazil? How do you explain New York in the beginning of the pandemic, when funeral homes in New York City were overwhelmed and crowded with coffins?

When I mention the high death rate in New York to some locals in Beacon, they rebut by saying that New York changed the cause of death. But the reality of overcrowded funeral homes and crematoriums is the ending fact. How do you rebut that?

In Beacon, our local funeral homes were crowded. One funeral director reached out to A Little Beacon Blog to confirm that they were very crowded.

Managing Your Symptoms During Your Vaccination

If you get vaccinated, here are some tips on how to feel as best as possible. Talk to your doctor, first of all. Second of all, everybody’s body is different.

  • Drink the water. Hydration is key. As your body fights, it uses water. Dehydration can deplete your energy and cause other problems.

  • Move your body. If you feel up to it. Ask your doctor, and if you’re too dizzy, don’t do it. But moving my body in a safe space helped me during COVID-19 and the vaccination. The blood flow from doing push-ups, for example, was really useful to bringing me to a place of feeling better for a bit. If I slumped back down, I’d do another set of Downward Facing Dog stretch, and pushups. A few leg lifts, and I was back to semi-normal.

  • Sleep. Do let yourself sleep.

  • Take the day off from work or school. Allow yourself to rest and your body to process.

Everyone is different. You may experience symptoms weeks after the vaccination. Or, if you are a long-hauler of COVID-19, months long symptoms may be lifting.

Whatever the result, here is hoping for the best for your health, and that of your family.

NY State Drops 18% In Vaccination Rate From Previous Week, Says Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney At JC Penney Vaccination Event

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney came to the former JC Penney store in the Poughkeepsie Mall Galleria, which serves as one of Dutchess County’s mass-vaccination sites, in order to encourage Dutchess County residents to get vaccinated.

During his kickoff speech, Rep. Maloney stated: “New York State has seen an 18% drop from the previous week," referring to the vaccination, after the rollout to the most vulnerable has happened, and qualifications to get the vaccine have opened up to anyone over 16 years old. President Biden has directed all states to open vaccinations to people over the age of 16 by May 1, 2021.

Rep. Maloney says that before they declare the decline a problem, they want to get the word out to encourage people to ask their questions to their doctors and faith leaders, to hopefully reach the conclusion that the vaccination is right for them. ALBB has emailed his office for his source, and has not yet received the source of the 18% statistic. Though his office has responded to ALBB’s requests for pictures of the event at JCPenney where he mentioned this stat. If you have this information, please submit.

This comes on the day when the CDC issued guidance that people who are fully vaccinated could be outside walking around, jogging, biking, maybe hiking, and being with others without their masks on - if they are fully vaccinated. Events such as Farmers Markets and other close quarters would still require face masks.

Below is the press release sent today (Tuesday, April 27, 2021) by Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney’s office. You can watch Re. Maloney’s full speech, along with Dutchess County Executive Molinaro here:

“Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (NY-18) will join Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro at the Poughkeepsie Galleria Vaccination Site to urge residents to sign up to get a vaccine. This visit is part of Congressman Maloney’s ongoing effort to combat vaccine hesitancy.”

“As of April 22, 45.1% of Dutchess County residents (132,644 of 294,218) had received at least one dose and 29.8% (87,609) were fully vaccinated. The Poughkeepsie Galleria vaccination site has been vaccinating residents since mid-January.”

“Biden administration officials are anticipating the supply of coronavirus vaccine to outstrip U.S. demand by mid-May if not sooner. A slowdown in vaccinations could delay the arrival of herd immunity. The longer that takes, the more time there is for dangerous variants to arise and possibly evade vaccines.”

“To combat hesitancy, the Congressman is redoubling his outreach efforts with community organizations and local leaders.”

Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine To Resume For Dutchess County Clinics

According to a press release issued by Dutchess County today, Monday, April 26, 2021, the county will resume use of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine, following guidance from the CDC and FDA.

The full press release is below:

“Dutchess County Commissioner of Behavioral & Community Health, Dr. Anil Vaidian has announced Dutchess County will resume vaccinations using Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine following the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recommendation to resume use of the J&J following a thorough safety review.”

“In accordance with CDC and FDA guidance, Dutchess County will resume administration of J&J vaccine,” said Dr. Vaidian. “This one-dose vaccine is an important option in our efforts to vaccinate and protect our community against COVID-19.”

“The FDA’s review of available data shows the known and potential benefits of the J&J vaccine outweigh the rare adverse risks. The FDA and CDC expressed confidence the J&J vaccine is safe and effective in preventing COVID-19.”

Women 50 Years and Younger Should Be Aware Risk Of Thrombosis

“Women younger than 50 years old should be aware of the very rare risk of adverse event called thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS), which involves blood clots with low platelets occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women between 18 and 49 years old. Other COVID-19 vaccine options are available for which this risk has not been seen.”

“Anyone who received the J&J vaccine and developed severe headache, abdominal pain, leg pain, or shortness of breath within three weeks after vaccination, should immediately contact their health care provider.”

“Dutchess County will resume use of J&J vaccine this week and will utilize J&J vaccine at various “Community Pop-Up Clinics” at locations throughout Dutchess County. More information about where J&J vaccine will be available will be posted on the County’s website as clinics are scheduled.”
