VIDEO: Noah Of Mountain Stream Budo Answers Wuthering Heights Book Question, But Not Before Finishing Kobudo Moves

Books came out for last week’s rainy day weekend, as did plans for class and new routine signups (see A Little Beacon Blog’s Classes Guide for ideas). As ALBB finishes Wuthering Heights (can only get through a page a night before falling asleep), the old delicate pages from this 1972 paperback fall out. Katie wondered whether this old copy was worth anything. So she headed over to Noah at Mountain Stream Budo, who, in addition to owning the martial arts studio, is a collector of rare first and limited edition books.

Upon stopping in, we got to see Noah performing a kobudo routine, using one of that art’s weapons. Check this out!

Traditional Okinawan weaponry that Noah arranged in a photo spread. These are used in their Kobudo classes. A Free Trial Class is available for anyone to try.

Find out what Mountain Stream Budo’s kobudo program entails here. And if you need a new copy of Wuthering Heights, or any book, visit Binnacle Books or other independent bookstores from ALBB’s Shopping Guide.

VIDEO: Juneteenth 2026 Lineup In Beacon Has Dropped - What To Expect

🎉🗓️🐦‍🔥The Juneteenth in Beacon lineup as dropped. ALBB published a Sneak Peek video on our Instagram before heading to Sun River Health for a kid’s dental appointment (you know we love Beacon Dental too, but Medicaid is available at Sun River until we can fit Delta Dental Insurance back in the budget).

Look for appearances from Bosco and the Storm - who is the brainchild behind this event. The Marching Cobras of New York will be there, with DJ King Cyrus spinning. Maya Moore will preform. Listen for the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice And Sing” to be sung and arrive on time so that you don’t miss it.

For food, look for mozzarella sticks and steak sandwiches from the Number Seven Sandwich Hub food truck, Pats Kitchen and others.

Shopping from Brown Girlz Crafts, Crowned Natural Haircare, Jades Collection, Allor Romance, Shopping Reveal, Four Winds Crafts and others.

Non-profits like LesSouers Amiable Civic Club, Beacons Backyard Kitchen, and Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail will be there.

ALBB will be there too! With our face painting table. This year, we are trying something new: offering Sponsor Opportunities for readers and businesses to buy the kids’ face painting sessions so that parents can have for free. Link and levels will drop here shortly.

Both Basketball Courts At Loopers (South Ave) and Memorial Park Get Full Court Paint Press

Right before the rainy week and just in time for summer, the basketball courts at Memorial Park and at Loopers Plaza (South Avenue Park) got painted. A Plus Striping was parked at Memorial Park taking measurements before the paint was put down. Kids and adults are already out playing at Memorial like they haven’t been in years since that court was in such poor condition.

The court at Loopers is a new pattern of green and tan/beige. The bench area is now nice and new with the stone retaining wall behind it (formerly wooden beams).

A Plus Striping is a veteran-owned, fully insured striping company of sports surfaces, pavement marking and epoxy coatings in NY, NJ, CT, and PA.

Dear ALBB: "Are You Planning On Any Followup Articles On The Woman Who Was Assaulted In Beacon On Tioronda Ave Earlier This Year?"

Dear ALBB:

“Are you planning on any followup articles on the woman who was assaulted on Tioronda Ave in Beacon earlier this year?”

The email came in Tuesday morning, which was the morning after Memorial Day Weekend. So it was as if it was a Monday. A few other emails came in as well. Two people emailed in - with urgency - about the data center being proposed for East Fishkill. A reporter also emailed in with a pitch to write an article about how Pat Ryan and Mike Lawler continue to accept money from AIPAC, the Israeli lobby that seems to be running and ruining this country. ALBB accepted the article. It will likely publish next week.

The Tioronda Assault, as it’s come to be referred by locals in Beacon, remains on everyone’s mind from when it happened in January 2026. When ALBB is out and about, people sometimes stop to ask: “Any news about Tioronda?” Which is met by a blank stare, because ALBB thinks they are talking about traffic patterns or development issues on Tioronda.

But they are not. They are talking about the woman who was violently attacked and dragged up the hill into the woods while walking her dog one dark and chilly Friday morning in January before sunrise. News of which spread via one screenshot of a text that was circulated around hundreds of phones, talked about in private Facebook groups, and turned everybody upside down as they tried to respect the victim, asses their own safety, and look for the suspect.

The attack was kept under the rug at first by the Beacon Police. No matter how well intentioned they were, the attack was first called a “Possible Assault” in their first press release. The press release said it was “near Wolcott,” which may be misleading because Wolcott is a busy avenue, and this happened in the woods. The police recommended a lockout at Sargeant Elementary (keeps all kids in the school and locks the doors) while they searched the grounds for the attacker who they never found.

The public has been sus of the handling of this case. There are several reasons for this. This article will address some of these issues below:

Jaded Locals Said: “This Happens All The Time.”
Police Said: “As With Any Other Time, People Should Use Caution”

Right away, people had opinions. Locals contacting ALBB, mostly the male ones, said: “This happens all of the time. You don’t realize how many violent crimes happen here.” ALBB did not dispute this, as we have been told of assaults and violations that do not make it into Beacon Police reports, but it was not comforting.

In their second press release, the Beacon Police said: “As with any other time, people should use caution, be aware of their surroundings…” And by their fourth release, recommended for people to take self defense class.

This was not comforting. Even though the press release said that the officers investigating the crime were thinking about it day and night.

Babyann Hernandez, a Beacon resident who created Before. (an app that helps people spot domestic violence tendencies before it's too late), said this in a recent 5 Questions interview with the Highlands Current when asked if women's behavior changed since the assault on Tioronda: "Absolutely," she said in the paper. "Women are less inclined to walk their dogs alone, especially in that area, and at certain times. It was triggering for me...When I moved to Beacon, I felt a sense of, 'Oh, that can’t happen here,' and then when it happened, I felt like I couldn’t breathe."

What Do We Not Know?

The Beacon Police released a description of the attacker: a white man, about 5’11” who is in his 30s-40’s with “a brown, very close beard.” But questions remain:

  • Did Beacon Police question anyone in the area the day of the attack? If so, how long after the assault did they question anyone?

  • Was the dog harmed in any way? Did the dog show signs of being kicked? Or did the dog show signs of trying to bite someone? Was it scared?

  • Are there indications that the white male with the close beard has done this before? Are there other police reports fitting this description?

  • Are there incidents described by women to the Beacon Police in the past that for whatever reason did not make it into a police report?

  • Should the Beacon Police make an open call for unreported violent assaults? To encourage people to come forward again - or for the first time?

What Do We Know?

No new information has been released by the Beacon Police. We know that they need evidence to make a case. We know from some local residents that the first responders who attended the victim were shaken. We know that the climate at the time was very testosterone driven with zero accountability. Employees of ICE had just shot and killed two people (the mom and the nurse) in Minneapolis, Minnesota and were under no threat of being arrested or investigated. People who are in the immigration process were and continue to be picked up, taken away in vans, and then sometimes dropped on the side of the road if enough legal intervention happens on their behalf.

The night before this attack, a Comment person in Facebook who writes under an anonymous name actually wished that ALBB would get SA’ed by “an illegal.” ALBB suspects who this anonymous person is, as they appeared after ALBB published the story of the alleged underage drinking in the woods article.

Much as MAGA likes to pin blame on brown people, this was very white.

Soon after the attack, a neighborhood walk was organized, where about fifty people walked. Neighbors discussed among themselves what their thoughts were about the situation. A few citizens have come to City Council Meetings to discuss their ideas on improving safety along Tioronda Avenue by having the City of Beacon install lighting on the street. This topic has not been carried through by Mayor Kyriacou. No safety measures have been proposed by the Mayor or added to any future agendas.

Among Us - Bro Culture and Toxic Circles

There exists protection in high class functions. A disbelief that a person circling around classy events, like a foodie celebration or gala, could ever do something so violent. But we have all seen the movie American Psycho. Heck, we are living it with the Israeli genocide on Palestine, and the Epstein Class seeing no accountability.

A recent crime-writing literary workshop event by Beacon Lit featured a Beacon-based author, Cynthia Weiner, author of the New York Times best seller A Gorgeous Excitement, which is about the Central Park “preppy murder.” During the class, Cynthia passed out descriptions of unsolved cases in this area, and encouraged participants to pick one to use for her next exercises in this class, which included asking one self why a certain story resonated with them on why the writers wanted to write about it.

The Unsolved Murder Of Scout

Then there is the still unsolved murder of Quiet Man Rene Vivo known as Scout. He was stabbed one afternoon at 3pm on Main Street near Feeds R Us and Amacord while walking back to his home at Forrestal Heights. Despite cameras on the streets, the murderer was never found. Former Police Chief Sans Frost indicated during one Budget Presentation during a City Council Meeting that the suspect could have been a “transient,” a word police use when referring to people who move through towns with no official grounding anchor of a home. Word on the street exists of who might have done it. What events led up prior to that stabbing. But it remains unsolved.

The Beacon Police, along with the Dutchess County Drug Task Force and and the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Drone Unit were most recently involved in the arrest of four people in connection with the murder of Lionell Pittman, a Beacon community member in the Forrestal Heights parking lot. The shooting in the Groveville community in October 2024 remains unsolved.

The killing on Rombout Ave of Casey Cuddy, the psychiatrist nurse, by the retired Beacon police officer Eddie Irizarri in July 2025 was self-reported by the retired officer to 911. The Beacon Police arrested him and turned the case over to New York State. That case is moving through the court process. The arson of the house at 426 Wolcott Ave was also self reported by the arsonist, who walked himself to the police station to turn himself in after dousing the house in gasoline. He had been a prior resident there when it was a boarding house, but was being evicted as the boarding house with no private bathrooms and a communal kitchen was being completely renovated into apartments with bathrooms and kitchens in each unit.

They responded to 3,635 calls last year 2025, and take donations 365 days a year. You may donate online here, or send them a check.

Why Does Ziatün Have A "Protect Doctors" Sign In Their Window?

Why does Ziatün have the “Protect Doctors” sign in their window? Because Ziatün is a Palestinian-owned eatery that highlights systematic murders of Palestinians and now Lebanon by Israel in the “Greater Israel” vision, which is to exterminate others in a Zionist quest for dominance. Currently in Lebanon, doctors and paramedics are being targeted while they rush to help people. If you didn’t see it live, as many of us did in January 2024, you’ll see it in the Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix backed film, “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” where the little Palestinian girl Hind’s family was murdered in her car as she was on a 911 call, and then the paramedics who came to save them were also shot multiple times by Israeli IDF and died.

LEBANON
“One month into the latest intensification of strikes on Lebanon, Israel has killed 53 medical workers, destroyed 87 ambulances or medical centres, and forced the closure of five hospitals, according to Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health.”
- Al Jazeera “How Israel is destroying healthcare infrastructure in southern Lebanon”

PALESTINE
“During the war, Israeli forces killed 1,722 healthcare workers in Gaza, approximately 2 health workers per day. Photos of Palestinian healthcare workers killed in the Gaza war, 25 November 2023. On 8 October, 2023, Israel killed 6 health workers while attacking health facilities and ambulances. On 15 October 2023, a total of 28 health workers had been killed and 30 recorded incidents of violence against health facilities, ambulances, and health workers since the Israeli bombing began. By November 16, 2023 it was reported that more than 200 health care workers had been killed, with some killed at hospitals, in ambulances, or at the sight of bombings, while others killed at home. On 18 January 2024, Israel struck a building which was housing Medical Aid for Palestinians staff and their family members, causing several injuries.”

VIDEO: Reactions To The Driscoll Strawberries Report - The 12 Pesticides Found On Them - 8 "Forever Chemicals"

I mean. We knew this. But with all the things going on - with all of the revelations of which Epstein-class billionaires (Bill Gates via his potato farms that make the McDonald's french fries - this is the same “philanthropist” trying to aid in curing or managing cancer) and which Zionists own which land in California, Washington state, and other parts of the country, and who is poisoning us and who is developing poisonous weapons to spray into us by demonstrating their vaporization on Palestinians and now Lebanese, it is time to face the "fresh" strawberry reality.

If they aren't bombing us or shooting us or tasering us, they are pesticiding us, and we do not want to give them the satisfaction of giving us cancer, to then cycle us in the harder to access medical care system as Medicaid and Medicare continue to get cut.

A video made by FlowersInSpanish (FLOR), a Protectora and Revolutionist, that encourages everyone to abandon Driscoll’s and store-bought produce all-together, has gone viral. A Little Beacon Blog has republished it below. FLOR says: “California grows 90% of ALL the strawberries in the United States. Driscoll’s sells nearly 40% of those strawberries. Driscoll’s headquarters is in Santa Cruz County, where childhood cancer rates are 38% higher than the rest of California. Driscoll’s continues to defend their use of pesticides PFAS ‘forever chemicals’.”

FLOR’s video and other articles and videos was sparked by Mamavation, a group who commissions independent laboratory investigations into everyday products to reveal truths about those products to help us claim a more non-toxic lifestyle. Mamavation produced a report on Driscoll strawberries, both organic and the regular version. Washing the poison off can be difficult and time consuming.

The report found that regular version of the Driscoll strawberry - which often looks perfect, beautiful and juicy - tested positive for 12 different pesticides, 8 of which are linked to the "forever chemical" that can remain in the body and the environment for long periods of time. These are known as PFAS-linked pesticides.

In a later video, FlowersInSpanish said this: “It's not just about strawberries. It's pesticides banned in other countries. It's poisoned land, air and water. It's severely hurting farmworkers. It's standing against an industrial food system that puts project over everyone's health, including yours.”

Hudson Valley based Amber Katz wrote an article at Yahoo Creators in the Lifestyle section that highlights this report. Amber is a lifestyles and beauty writer and copywriting business owner who writes for Westchester & Hudson Valley Magazines, The Seattle Times, and her own Things I Buy As A Civilian.

After explaining the Mamavation report and what regular Driscoll strawberries contain, which includes pointing out: “The report alleged that several of the detected levels exceeded stricter standards used in other countries, including the European Union, Taiwan, Chile, Korea, and Russia — but those international standards vary significantly from US regulations and from each other,” Amber says that the organic Driscoll line is OK.

ALBB is skipping Driscoll for now. Amber makes several organic strawberry recommendations in her next article.

ORGANIC RECOMMENDATIONS FROM AMBER KATZ

FRESH ORGANIC
Naturipe Farms
Well Pict

FROZEN ORGANIC
Earthbound Farm
Cascadian Farm
Wyman's
Whole Foods 365 Organic frozen berries
Trader Joe's brand organic frozen berry

Amber reports that Cosco's Kirkland Signature organic frozen berries are acceptable to her standards, but ALBB doesn't trust the Kirkland brand because the label on their beef patties says that they "may" contain pork, and that's weird. Also, the blood from Kirkland's beef patties forms into a gelatin that we don't need. Therefore, Kirkland brand is out for ALBB.

HUDSON VALLEY FARMER'S MARKETS

Not everyone at local Farmer's Markets will be certified organic (Beacon, Cold Spring, Newburgh, Cornwall, and a new one emerging in Wappingers). But you can ask the farmers how they grow their produce, and make your decision on their answers. Being certified organic is an expensive and bureaucratic process that not every farmer can afford to pay. However, our local farmers' growing practices may be just as good or better. They perhaps did not pursue paying for the right to say "certified organic."

SNAP and EBT benefits (food stamps) are accepted at the Beacon, Cold Spring Farmer's and Newburgh Farmers' Markets and offer the New York State's Fresh Connect $2 Coupon (free $2 bills that buy fresh food). The Beacon Farmer's Market fundraising program Soup4Greens raises funds for their Greens4Greens program that provides for this.

For every $2 of SNAP processed, customers will receive a $2 NY Fresh Connect coupon (up to $50) to add to the money they can spend at the market.

YOUR BACKYARD

You could always try growing your own strawberries. ALBB recommends the Ruth Stout hay mulch method to lock in moisture and block out weeds.

CareFull MD's Guidance On When To Go To The ER Versus When To Go To Urgent Care

Exam Rooms at CareFull MD’s Urgent Care.

When you think of CareFull MD’s Urgent Care, you think immediate access to finding relief from symptoms. Urgent care, however, is different from the Emergency Room, which is attached to a hospital with more specialist and treatment options.

Things to think about before deciding between Urgent Care and the ER

Ask yourself right away about the severity of your symptoms. If you are having severe issues, you may want to consider going to the ER, which is connected to a hospital, which has more services, like a CT Scan and MRI. Urgent Care centers can usually handle X-rays, stitches, minor fractures, infections, and basic lab work. Urgent Care can also make referrals to specialists for further treatment once your symptoms are diagnosed.

Severity of Symptoms:

  • Chest pain

  • Trouble breathing

  • Stroke symptoms

  • Severe bleeding

  • Loss of consciousness usually require the ER

  • Time-sensitive conditions

  • Possible heart attack

  • Stroke

  • Appendicitis (severe pain in the lower abdomen, where it’s hard to talk or move)

  • Severe allergic reactions (trouble breathing, worsening symptoms by the moment)

  • Head injuries should not wait

Availability of Services

Urgent Care explains the concern. If you come in to CareFull MD, their practitioner may tell you why the ER is recommended. For example: you may need a CT Scan, have a possible blood clot, or are experiencing dehydration requiring IV treatment. You may also need a cardiac evaluation depending on your symptoms. You can come to CareFull MD to check if you’re unsure of your symptoms.

Urgent Care stabilizes immediate issues if needed. You may be given oxygen, a nebulizer treatment for breathing issues, medications, bandaging, splinting, or basic treatment before transfer to the ER. At that point, transportation is determined. If the condition appears potentially dangerous, they may call an ambulance for you. If you are stable, they may tell you to go directly by private vehicle if someone can drive you.

Urgent Care may send to the ER your visit notes, vital signs, X-rays or lab results, and medication list that they determined while in their care. In some cases, CareFull MD’s Urgent Care calls ahead to the ER of your choice. However, this does not always mean you skip the waiting room or triage process. That is up to the Emergency Room and their schedule.

CareFull MD accepts most insurances including Medicaid and Medicare.

What to expect at tonight’s "You Have Lost America by the Irish" A Musical History Lesson at the Beacon Sloop Club":

Where: Beacon Sloop Club Clubhouse, Red Flynn Drive, Beacon, NY
When: Thursday, May 2
Time: 7pm
Price: Free

There is a moment in history that most Americans have never heard — and it changes everything you thought you knew about the Revolution.

In 1784, Lord Mountjoy stunned the British Parliament with a blunt assessment: "America was lost by Irish emigrants… the major part of the American Army was composed of Irish, and it was their valor that determined the contest." More than 175 years later, President Kennedy stood before the Irish Parliament and said the same thing.

It's a chapter of history most Americans never learned — yet nearly 250,000 Irish immigrants had settled in America by the time of the Revolution, and almost one-third of the Revolutionary forces, including 1,500 officers, 22 generals, and more than a dozen sea captains, claimed Irish ancestry. More signers of the Declaration of Independence came from Ireland than any other foreign country, and the first naval engagement of the war was commanded by an Irishman.

So could the Revolution have been won without them? Come to the Beacon Sloop Club on Thursday, May 21 at 7 PM and find out.

Presenter Bill Devlin will bring this forgotten chapter to life through an illustrated PowerPoint presentation, tracing the soldiers, commanders, and everyday heroes whose sacrifice made American independence possible.

The evening's history will be accompanied by live traditional Irish music performed by the musicians of the Andy McGann Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann — the world's largest organization dedicated to preserving Irish music, dance, and culture. On May 21, they bring the songs and ballads of the Revolutionary era to the banks of the Hudson.

Free and open to the public. All are welcome.

Alleged Sink Hole At MTA Beacon Train Entrance Discovered Or Treated Wednesday Night

Police officers looking into what may be a sink hole, surrounded by other cracks that may or may not be related to the alleged sink hole.

The call came in to A Little Beacon Blog on Wednesday night at 10:30pm: “There’s a lot of police activity at the train station right now. It’s completely blocked off,” the caller said. While ALBB was asleep and still in a dream at that hour, it was hard to comprehend where exactly the person was talking about, and which parts were blocked off. Tempted to roll out of bed, ALBB took in more information, and then decided that the police had it handled, and that something would percolate up in the morning.

Indeed, photos surfaced at the Beacon NY Facebook group with a resident report that the issue was allegedly a sink hole at the top of the driveway to the train station, Railway Drive, right off Beekman Street, in front of the new townhouses, and down the street from the MTA Police Station. Photos show at least two police officers shining a flashlight into a hole in the pavement in what seems to be late afternoon when Wednesday’s light rain drizzle started, before it was patched soon after.

By 7am Thursday at least, the road was cleared and a wide patch set. Traffic was normal. Said one reader and resident who lives in the area to ALBB: “When we went to bed, there were just police blocking the entrance and a barricade up. By the time we woke up to drive to school, it seemed back to normal.”

A wide patch was made, but other cracks surround the area. It is not clear if this area has been patched over time to address the same problem.

Neither the City of Beacon nor the Beacon Police Department posted a notice about a sink hole, nor answered ALBB’s inquires by the time of this publishing.

Beekman Street is slated for a major street rehabilitation upgrade project with a “tentatively awarded $3 million federal grant” announced in last year’s Capital Projects Budget presentation in June 2025, which is for street, sidewalk and crosswalk design and a new bike lane on one side of the street. But that does not necessarily include this Railroad Drive down to the MTA train station. Last summer 2025, residents remember Beekman Street being torn up for pipe replacement “all summer loooooong,” recalled one resident to ALBB.

Photos are below of the patched hole (photo credits Katie Hellmuth). Also below are unanswered questions that ALBB has asked the City:

ALBB’s questions awaiting answered:

  • Is this indeed a sink hole?

  • Whose property is Railway Drive? The MTA’s or the City of Beacon’s? Who is responsible for paying for maintaining and infrastructure upgrades in this spot of the entrance road?

  • Which entity produced the patch on Wednesday night? An outside contractor? The City of Beacon Highway Department? State or County workers?

  • What are the future plans for addressing the sink hole, if it is a sink hole?

What Is A Sink Hole?

As described in a report produced by CBC/Radio Canada, which described Montreal’s aging infrastructure that was causing sink holes:

“A sink hole is a steep walled hole that opens up when material has been removed from underneath the surface and then the surface collapses into it,” said Christie Rowe, an Associate Professor at McGill University to CBC/Radio Canada. “Normally that process of removal is due to dissolution. Like when rain water runs through cracks and rock. If that rock is dissolving into the rain water as it percolates down, or is lost from the City plumbing systems through leaks in the pipes, that water can move underneath the ground and create voids. Then when it collapses from the surface down into the hole, that creates the sink hole.”

"Perma Pop-Up" Is New Trend In Communal Pop-Up Shopping, Helping Independent Sellers and Brick and Mortar Shops

A new business development popped up in Newburgh that A Little Beacon Blog is calling a “Perma Pop-Up” model.

What started with a canceled winter farmers market in Cornwall due to winter challenges has evolved into a semi-permanent opportunity for two friends: Eggbert’s Free Range Farm and the Shake and Grind, which has evolved to include other local vendors.

“It’s all about local supporting local,” the new owner of Shake and Grind, Leza, told A Little Beacon Blog in a recent video interview published below. Also pictured below are driving shots of businesses nearby the Algonquin Plaza, of which the Shake and Grind is located, so that you can get a feel for the strip that is Exit 37 off I-84.

Carrie Sabins, owner of and farmer at Eggbert's Free Range Farm, expanded on the genesis of her new Perma Pop Up location inside of Shake and Grind: “Leza and I are market vendor neighbors at the Cornwall Farmer’s Market. When they closed for that harsh winter, my customers in Newburgh were looking for a pickup point. If they ordered from me off our website. One of my customers was one of Leza's friends, and suggested I drop off her order at Shake and Grind."

ALBB's sister company Katie James Inc. also produces the marketing and branding for Eggbert's, leading Katie to suggest to Carrie to have a drop-off location at Shake and Grind for regular customers. "No, no, I don't want to put Leza out," Carrie responded. Instead, Carrie began popping up every Wednesday in the café, setting up her coolers of farm fresh food for sale.

But within a few weeks, Carrie was setting up a refrigerator in the store. Leza had offered her permanent floor space, where people could pay Eggbert's directly. "How will they pay? Put it in a jar?" the team pondered. "They could zip it through a QR Code!" Carrie already had a Venmo QR Code for her customers at market. The team at Katie James produced a giant magnet with different payment QR code options, including a way to shop the website for more options, and fridge store shopping was open.

Leza has expanded to include more local vendors who each post their QR codes with their merchandise, which includes local honey, self-published authors, a vintage clothing curator, bird feeders, and others.

In this video interview, Katie visits Carrie and Leza to check out the new magnet on the fridge, and interview them for the genesis of the idea.

Basketball Court at Loopers Plaza (South Avenue Park) Gets Resurfaced

After years of neglect, the basketball court at Loopers Plaza (South Avenue Park) is in the regular maintenance schedule for the City Of Beacon - for now. After being called out years ago by then City Councilmember Ali T. Muhammad, and then highlighted in a budget proposal during Beacon’s new Participatory Budget Program with the Beacon High School by students, the replacement of structural needs of this basketball court were estimated at $900,000 (came in at $893,000), and were invested in City of Beacon taxpayer money, and a New York State Grant of $150,000 secured by Assemblymember Johnathan Jacobson, reported WHUD.

That project included:

  • Installation of a new permanent restroom in the park (Musco Lighting and the Public Restroom Company)

  • Repair of failing retaining walls at both tennis and basketball courts

  • New energy-efficient LED court lighting on the basketball courts

  • Renovation and repair of fencing on both tennis and basketball courts

  • Sport-specific acrylic resurfacing of both courts

  • Landscaping and new plantings

  • Hudson River-themed mural on the restroom building (artist: Joe Pimentel, who also painted the public restroom at Memorial Park in 2019)

The City of Beacon’s Highway Department paved the court, after resurfacing the badly neglected basketball court at Memorial Park this year, current City Administrator Ben Swanson announced in this week’s City Council Meeting.
