Details About Beacon's First Annual Juneteenth From Bosco and the Storm, and Beacon 4 Black Lives - Get The Music and Vendor Lineup Here

Mergers in Beacon. Coming together. That is what Beacon’s community is all about. Lots of ideas. Lots of intentions. Sometimes done before. Sometimes done again. Since the racial reawakening of 2020, there have been 3 Juneteenth celebrations in Beacon organized by Beacon 4 Black Lives. But this year’s is being billed as Beacon’s First Annual Juneteenth. That is because a merger happened between groups who each had the desire and drive to produce the event: Beacon 4 Black Lives and Bosco and the Storm and his niece, Lastar.

For the past 3 years, Beacon 4 Black Lives held Juneteenth events. “The first year was a celebration in the form of a protest,” founding member Justice McCray told A Little Beacon Blog. “The next two years were at a private venue. We were thinking…how can we support somebody’s else’s vision? Something better, something new and something fresh. Something that invites more people in.”

At the end of Spirit of Beacon Day 2022, Michael Faison aka “Bosco” of Bosco and the Storm, who was a Musical Spirit Coordinator and performer for that event, told ALBB of his desire to produce a Juneteenth celebration the following year. Brooke Simmons and Rueben “Yogi” Simmons, the brother/sister duo and co-founders of I Am Beacon assisted Lastar with getting in touch with Justice to help them with permits and organizing, who after leading racial justice protests in the city with Beacon 4 Black Lives, ran and earned a position on Beacon’s City Council.

This year, Bosco told the Highlands Current how the idea came to him to produce a Juneteenth event: “I was actually at home and it just hit me that we need to do a Juneteenth festival. I called my niece, who is good at organizing. It’s going to feature my band and other local bands with Black artists, but it’s not just limited to Black artists, because my band is interracial. We’ll have Black entertainers, comedians, singers, dancers, poets — people doing whatever they do to be a part of the festival. Beacon 4 Black Lives also stepped in to help get the permits and that stuff.

“I never thought we would see this [Juneteenth celebrated as a national holiday] in my lifetime, but I’m glad we can start it here, and then the younger generations can keep it rolling. A lot of the Black folks who were born and raised here moved away, so we tried to reach out to them to come home for a day. And it’s not just for Black folks; it’s for anyone who wants to come have a good time.”

While this is called “Beacon’s Juneteenth,” it’s a city-wide event. “The City of Beacon has been supporting us, but it’s a city-wide event, but not produced by the City of Beacon, but the City gave their support,” said Justice.

Juneteenth Parking

Justice wanted to get the word out about parking: “Parking not listed as MTA’s Free Parking Day, so unfortunately, it is paid parking at the station - as far as we know.” There is a small parking lot by the park, but the organizers are prioritizing that for the elderly. People are recommended to have a parking drop off spot. Beacon’s building, 1 Municipal Plaza, does have free parking on Monday because the building will be closed.

Parking in the MTA lot is $3.50 at the train. You can also park on side streets and walk a bit down to the river.

Juneteenth!! :: Retail Therapy Guide 6/17/2022

It's Juneteenth on Sunday! Let us remember that this holiday of independence for African Americans living in the USA is a holiday of delay of freedom and decency - delay that processes can create, and that laws can create in plain sight to make people not matter.

Juneteenth has been celebrated by the Black community since 2 years after the Civil War ended and the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, abolishing slavery. Enslaved people in Texas were never told about President Abraham Lincoln's executive order declaring enslaved people to be free. Two years later, a Union soldier rode into town to deliver the news. The response from the African American community was jubilation and celebration with music, food and community.

Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Juneteenth Independence Day, according to Britannica. Despite these words of freedom, the Black community would be kept down by Jim Crow Laws, making it nearly impossible for them to vote, own property, and other basic functions of living in the United States of America.

For the first time since 1865 - that's 157 years later - the holiday became a national (paid in some cases) holiday, made possible by President Joe Biden. One hundred and fifty seven years is a lot of delay! Especially evident as many in the white community only learned about Juneteenth in 2020 during the first months of racial re-awakening in our time.

Thanks to notifications in the Beacon Free Press and a great roundup at the Chronogram, we are able to share several Juneteenth events that you can participate in. For staying in place, the Highlands Current has been printing a great series on Black history in the Hudson Valley. Do give it a read and a listen to their podcast. The stories told by elders in the Black community here tell of experiences and an at times continued way of life that is not acceptable and rooted in strange comfort.

Also a great listen is the reading of essays from the students for the 2022 Martin Luther King Essay Contest at Beacon's City Council Workshop Meeting this week. The ceremony, usually held in February, had been delayed numerous times. Former Councilmember Ali Muhammad suggested hosting it during a Community Segment of the public meeting, so that you can have a chance to hear the kids read their essays on video. Give a listen (it's in the beginning).

PS: Speaking of the other Independence Day on July 4th, the Mayor announced during that meeting that July 4th event details if any were supposed to come down that night, but perhaps will come next week.

PPS: The Saugerties Town Board voted to cancel a scheduled gun show that was to be held at the Kiwanis Ice Arena, an event organized by David and Cathy Petronis, as reported in the Times Herald-Record. The Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra released a statement with comments from Petronis and Town Supervisor Fred Costello Jr. citing "recent mass shootings around the country" as the reason for the discomfort. David Patronis was in favor of continuing the show, and lamented the loss of revenue for small business, but it seemed many in the community and law enforcement did not want the event.

AND: Happy Fathers Day! Shop and Dine on Main Street!! To your heart's content.

Everyone: A GREAT Thank You to our sponsors in the Shopping and Restaurant Guides, and the Business Directory featured below. It is with their support, and reader support, that we produce this publication. Please make a point to give them your patronage. Thank you!

Author Imani Perry At Bardavon For Juneteenth For Her Book "South To America"

The author and multi-degree earner Imani Perry will speak on her new book South to America, followed by a Q & A and a book signing in the Bardavon lobby. The event is free, and is presented by the Poughkeepsie Public Library District and Bardavon Presents. Tickets are limited to two per person and can be reserved here. Imani is an American interdisciplinary scholar of race, law, literature, and African-American culture. Order the book online from Binnacle Books in Beacon.

In her new book South to America, the author seeks to change how people view the American South and, thus, the country’s history as a whole. Her writing and scholarship primarily focuses on the history of Black thought, art, and imagination crafted in response to, and resistance against, the social, political and legal realities of domination in the West. She seeks to understand the processes of retrenchment after moments of social progress, and how freedom dreams are nevertheless sustained. Her book: Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation (Duke University Press 2018) is a work of critical theory that contends with the formation of modern patriarchy at the dawn of capitalism, the transatlantic slave trade, and the age of conquest, and traces it through to the contemporary hypermedia neoliberal age. Her book More Beautiful and More Terrible: The Embrace and Transcendence of Racial Inequality in the United States (NYU Press, 2011) is an examination of contemporary practices of racial inequality that are sustained and extended through a broad matrix of cultural habits despite formal declarations of racial equality.

Imani is the author of 6 other books, including Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry, which received the Pen Bograd-Weld Award for Biography, The Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award for outstanding work in literary scholarship, the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Nonfiction and the Shilts-Grahn Award for nonfiction from the Publishing Triangle. Looking for Lorraine was also named a 2018 notable book by the New York Times, and a honor book by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. It was a finalist for the African American Intellectual History Society Paul Murray Book Prize. Her book May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem, winner of the 2019 American Studies Association John Hope Franklin Book Award for the best book in American Studies, the Hurston Wright Award for Nonfiction, and finalist for an NAACP Image Award in Nonfiction. Her most recent book is: Breathe: A Letter to My Sons (Beacon Press, 2019) which was a finalist for the 2020 Chautauqua Prize and a finalist for the NAACP Image Award for Excellence in Nonfiction.

Imani is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and a faculty associate with the Programs in Law and Public Affairs, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Jazz Studies. She is a scholar of law, literary and cultural studies, and an author of creative nonfiction. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center and a BA from Yale College in Literature and American Studies.

Happy 4th! Weekend Retail Therapy Guide

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Happy 4th of July! While there won't be fireworks locally, Beacon will be popping with color thanks to the "Let's Chalk & Art Together" movement inspired by last year's Juneteenth celebration. Local therapist who specializes in intersectionality (the overlapping of personal characteristics that make you who you are, and how others treat you), Moraya Seeger DeGeare, will be chalking up the streets with messages encouraging kids and adults to start conversations about systemic racism. An official event happens Sunday down at Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park - fitting, as Pete and Toshi are Moraya's grandparents.

A Little Beacon Blog is proud to announce the winners of our 2nd Annual Juneteenth Art Showcase! We commissioned 2 designers this year to design the logos used in our first call for art - Dom (Dominesha) Garth and Vintage Messiah.

Two artists were selected:
Rachel Lewis, a poet who has been published in local literary journals and zines. Four poems have been published, which address what it means to date a Black woman; creation; beginnings; and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Vintage Messiah, a recording artist and producer released his talents on paper to illustrate two sketches commemorating the day.

Two supporting sponsors commissioned the grant ALBB is able to award these artists. Special thanks to an Anonymous Reader, and to Moraya Seeger DeGeare of To My Old Racist Earth.

You can read Rachel's poems and see Vintage's sketches here!

No.3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works is participating as a venue in this “ruckus” by presenting projects by several artists working to shine this light through photography, printmaking, publications, installation, video and painting throughout summer and fall, 2021. Reading of the Declaration of Independence
Day:
Sunday, July 4, 2021
Time: 11 am
Location: 1 Municipal Plaza
Dennis Pavlov returns to read the Declaration of Independence. "There is more to these patriotic holidays than parades, fireworks, cookouts and BBQs. Our forefathers, I don't believe, should be left out," Dennis told City Council when promoting the event during a meeting. This year, there is no longer a Declaration of Independence Reading committee, refreshments will not be served and copies of  Declaration of Independence will not be handed out. Perhaps next year, Dennis will also consider reading the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln, the news of which was delivered and read 2 years late on June 19th to Texas by Major General Gordon Granger. However, read what Gordon actually said.

Including how to pitch 4th of July Independence Day in a different way - as in - introduce some more forefathers and foremothers ancestors to the usual lineup. This is how to connect Juneteenth with July 4th - both Independence Days. It’s an educational opportunity on many levels. For this weekend only, Tin Shingle has opened up this TuneUp for Hudson Valley friends to stream free. Normally all TuneUps are free for members of Tin Shingle, or are sold separately.

Winners Of ALBB's 2021 Juneteenth Art Showcase: Rachel Lewis (Poetry) and Vintage Messiah (Illustration)

A Call For Juneteenth Art logo by Vintage Messiah.

A Call For Juneteenth Art logo by Dom (Dominesha) Garth.

A Little Beacon Blog is celebrating its 2nd Annual Juneteenth Art Showcase! On June 19th, we put a call out for art produced by people identifying with the Black community. We also put a call out for sponsors to contribute any amount, and 100% of the contributions would go to the artists featured here. We also put a call out for logo designers, and accepted and commissioned 2 logos (shown above)! One from Vintage Messiah (left) and Dom (Dominisha) Garth (right). Thank you to everyone who participated!

Being that Juneteenth can run from June 19th until July 4th, as both are independence days, we are announcing the artists selected for ALBB’s Juneteenth Art Showcase on July 4th weekend!

Thank you to our two sponsors for this: an anonymous reader, and Moraya Seeger DeGeare, founder of the To My Old Racist Earth movement. Thanks to your contributions, we were able to award two artists this year: Rachel Lewis for poetry and Vintage Messiah for Illustration. Their expressions are below!

Rachel Lewis - Poetry

Rachel Lewis (@xstarb0rn) has been published in the following publications: Honeyfire Literary magazine Issue 05, Most Girls, the online magazine The Cranberry, Celebrate 845’s zines Social Unity: Volume 1 Issue 2 and “…And All Was Illuminated.” Follow Dom on Instagram at @upstate.creative

In the submissions, we asked the artists two questions:

ALBB: What would you like to tell the United States and the rest of the world?

Rachel: “I would like to tell the United States, and the rest of the world, that we see through the performative activism veil and are requiring more than what we’ve been given in the past.

ALBB: What would you like to tell the community where you live?

Rachel: “I would also like to tell Newburgh, NY (which is located in the beautiful and diverse Hudson Valley) that your neighbors, coworkers, friends, and even strangers that you pass on the street, are tired of suffering so that others can remain in their comfort. Last year was an incredible time for human rights across the board. Let’s keep that energy flowing. Every piece of poetry I’ve selected represents the pain I’ve experienced because of racial inequality and recent enlightenment.”

Rachel’s poems submitted for 2021 Juneteenth are below:

Breonna Taylor

To date a black woman
Is to date her magnificence, her beauty.
To date a black woman is to look at her, to truly see.
You see her marching
For aunts, uncles, and cousins she doesn’t know;
Because their culture was ripped from them, centuries ago.
So when you want to date a black woman,
Be mindful of your prudence.
Only then will you gain access to her beauty,
To her magnificence.

In The Beginning

I believe that we all started from,
All sprouted from
The “Eve Gene;”
Carried by nothing less than magnificent beings.
Strong enough to carry the weight of the entire human race,
Us carriers are resilient
And consistently great.
Without us, life was not created.
Without us, the world’s driving force is emaciated.
And yet we still hunger for the respect that we deserve.
We could be demanding so much more
Instead of what others are so freely given.
But here we are,
Still fighting for respect and acknowledgement
And especially from our own men.
But do I believe we will regain ours?
Yes, because as much as history
Has tried to deny us our rights,
We are still magnificent beings.
We flourish
And we grow
And reap the greatness
Our ancestors have sown.

Creation

I was not born.
I was created.
I was created to stir, poke, and prod.
I was created to speak for those who cannot.
I am here to learn.
And I am here to teach.
I am here for those who are still asleep.
The lies and stories woven will no longer serve as our reality.
We demand justice.
We demand peace;
And furthermore, we demand equality.

This is America

The walls shook
But the foundation bore the weight.
In the center stood
Resiliency,
Righteousness,
And a call to reclaim power.
We are done fulfilling your need
With our humility.
We are firmly planted and united
And will continue to be.
Do not underestimate
Our strength
Because of our compassion.
We are not asking.
We are demanding
Our right to
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;
And anything and everything
Y’all have been trying to deny us.

Vintage Messiah - Illustration

Vintage Messiah is the type of determined person who amazes you with what they create on old phones, some of which can’t even make a call, or can barely get online. Vintage is multi-talented, as he is not only an illustrator, but he is a recording artists and producer of beats using various instruments and sounds.

As an illustrator, Vintage works with paper and digital as he passes his projects through various stages. Follow him at @vintagemessiah and @vintagemessiahart

ALBB: What would you like to tell the United States and the rest of the world?

Vintage Messiah: "I want the United States to put down the guns of tyranny and stop fighting against ourselves. We breathe , eat and bleed the same why , so why can't we all fight for what's right at the big dinner table of change, sharing a meal and sharing hearts as one, rather than clawing through separation. We don't need a holiday to accept our differences and move on"

ALBB: What would you like to tell the community where you live?

Vintage Messiah: "Putnam County should acknowledge and accept the fact that we all came up here to enjoy the scenery, tropical weather, and peaceful times just as much as they do. We don't want to offend you by being ourselves, and you should feel the same. When my family bought a home in the outskirts of towns, the neighbors were open and welcoming. My one wish to unite the same way they did, with loving arms and a burning curiosity on how we can learn more about each other and be friends"

ALBB: How did you make the logo and these submitted works of art?

Vintage: I made it on paper, scanned it into my computer , then colored over it with digital software. Mixed Media for me is combining multiple different art forms and creating a piece out of it. I've made animated music videos before, which in itself requires video editing, audio engineering, vocal recording and drawing on paper and scanning it in, frame by frame (or with computer automated animation), and mixing it together for the final project. This has always been my process , as I create so much stuff, I couldn't stick to one label, so I made my own and explain it like I did here. For this drawing , it was just a sketch, scan and color!!! I could also animate it as well.

Artist: Vintage Messiah. Contact him to commission your own piece.

Beacon's City Council Meeting Agenda: Department Appointments; Raises, Traffic; Juneteenth: 7/21/2021

city-council-public-meeting-agenda.png

This week, Beacon’s City Council will discuss the following at their weekly meeting.

The full agenda has been published here at ALBB, and the accompanying video of the meeting will be available there as well. The City usually publishes that video one day after a meeting.

You can also view the City’s original agenda at their website for all agendas and minutes.

Reports: City Council and City Administrator

1. Proclamation in Honor of Juneteenth Local Laws and Resolutions

Mayor Lee Kyriacou has been adopting a national holiday at the local level for the City of Beacon. As with mirroring proclamations such as these, he will speak on his feelings about the holiday.

Local Laws and Resolutions

1. Resolution Approving the Appointment of Kyle Sackett to Heavy Motor Equipment Operator
2. Resolution Approving the Appointment of Steven Brescia as a Motor Equipment Operator

Current employees will be given the indicated job title designation.

3. Resolution Adopting Proposed Salary Increases for City of Beacon Management

Employees who work at the management level of the City of Beacon but not covered by collective bargaining agreements with the CSEA union (which represents other City employees in departments like Highway and Water) are proposed to get a 2% raise (Building Inspector II, Adm Assistant to City Admin, Superintendent of Streets, Secretary to City Mayor, Recreation Director, Assistant Recreation Director, City Clerk, Director of Finance, and Fire Chief). New employees hired within the past year would not receive the raise, “also consistent with past practice,” according to the resolution.

4. Resolution Setting a Public Hearing on July 6, 2021 to Receive Public Comments on a Proposed Local Law to Amend Chapter 211, Article II, Section 10, Subsection B of the Code of the City of Beacon Regarding Vehicles and Traffic

This authorizes new Stop signs to be placed in specified intersections of side streets with Main Street, as recommended by the Main Street Access Committee from their strategic work months ago, and approved by the Traffic Committee. The list of Stop signs can be seen here.

Art Call For Juneteenth Inspired Art - All Types - Paper, Print, Spoken, Sung, Mixed

Logo design by Dom (@upstate.creative)

Hello!

For the second year in a row (see our first year!), A Little Beacon Blog is holding a Juneteenth art contest. The aim is to reserve space for the African American community to show their voices and visions during Juneteenth.

WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?

Juneteenth is a holiday of independence celebrated on June 19th by the Black community commemorating the liberation of the enslavement of Africans taken from their homes in other countries, separated from their families, and brought to North America so that white Americans could have their own Independence Day from Great Britain on July 4th. Some Native American tribes in Oklahoma kept African slaves as well, as was a recent focus during the Tulsa Race Massacre in Greenwood.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for over 150 years by African Americans, but not all knew about it, as it wasn’t taught regularly in schools. Last year, during the social reckoning of 2020, Juneteenth got elevated, paid attention to, and respected by the white community and other races. On June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth into law as a national holiday, where the government workforce and schools will observe the holiday.

HOW THIS WORKS

Submit your work for consideration to be published on A Little Beacon Blog.

  • Any age is welcome.

  • People from the African American community, of any mix or origen.

  • African Americans living in the Hudson Valley of New York.

  • Any medium is welcome. If you recorded a song, send it via Spotify or something we can embed. Actually, we can embed an mp3 on our own website! Artwork that is painted, pixelized, collaged, quilted, etc.

  • Please answer these 2 questions with your submission:

    • What do you want to tell the United States about what you want changed?

    • What do you want to tell _______ your town in the Hudson Valley about what you want changed? Any wish. What is your greatest wish?

  • A Description of your artwork.

  • Selected submissions will be published on A Little Beacon Blog, along with your answers. You can elect to skip giving an answer.

  • Selected submissions will win grant money if we get sponsors. Of the sponsorship dollars, 100% will be divided among the artists.

  • Email art file to katie@alittlebeaconblog.com

  • Deadline: June 23rd. Publish Date: June 26th

100% Of SPONSORSHIP GOES TO PRIZES/GRANTS

We can offer prizes if we have sponsorships. Depending on how many submissions we get, we could award grant money to several people. Therefore, 100% of sponsor dollars will go towards these grants.

To sponsor:

  1. Visit our Reader Support page and select a dollar amount.

  2. In the Comments, please indicate if this is to sponsor this initiative, and we will set it aside. Please also indicate if you want your name or business name listed with the final publishing of all artwork.

Once all sponsorships are in, the dollar amount will be divided evenly among the selected submissions.

Interview With Nicky Allen, Mother Of Juneteenth Art Creators - What Inspired Them To Participate?

juneteenth-art-winners-MAIN.png

Way back during the week of Juneteenth (June 19, 2020), when most white people including me were learning about Juneteenth and its significance (we wrote about it here), we needed artwork to represent it in an article. So we held a fast and furious contest of sorts, and got response from different creators. The “winner” got to be featured here at A Little Beacon Blog, as well as a $50 cash prize.

Nickeya (Nicky) Allen, a writer for Medium, and a return student at the School of Business at Mount Saint Mary College, submitted the artwork of her two children. We wanted to know more, and interviewed Nicky for the backstory of the art production.

ALBB: Was this your first time celebrating Juneteenth?

Yes, this was our first time celebrating Juneteenth.

ALBB: What inspired you to celebrate?

We were pretty active in our community on Staten Island. We're always looking for opportunities to connect and uplift Black voices. During the same year Eric Gardner was killed by police in plain-clothes in broad daylight, we came together to celebrate the 5th Annual Black Heritage Family Day Festival.

Visualize walking into a spacious park, Black families spread out on the lawn; some were just there relaxing and reading; some were reciting poetry; some were dancing; and some were there growing their brands. Articles later reported there had been more than 60 black owned vendors/businesses and nearly 2,500 people in attendance. Every year it grows. We wrote the book on unity, it's what we do to remind ourselves and others of our power. This energy is only heightened under stressful times. So, I didn't feel inspired per se, I felt obligated this year.

This year was the first year for [my family], but it's important to me to share that it is in no way a new celebration for Black races and our communities. I had always known of Juneteenth festivals happening in Irvington, NJ, Brownsville and Flatbush Brooklyn. Juneteenth is more about our desire to unite, show love and support for one another despite some of the hard realities we endure as a whole during our time spent on earth. It's spiritual and faith-filled, the belief in our ability to rise stems from our power together as one. It's least celebrated with discussions on slavery.

ALBB: How did you speak about it to your kids, and what made you all start this art project?

My babies are 7 and 4, I showed them photos of the many Umoja-type events we attended when they were younger. Umoja is a term I learned one year while celebrating Kwanzaa. It means unity, to strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race. I talked to them about honoring our ancestors in this way and by doing so, they'd make them proud.

We're still early risers although school is out [at the time of this writing in June 2020], we usually start our mornings off with some kind of art or reading. Friday, June 19, 2020 we took the Twister game place mat, cut it in half to make the banner. We paint a lot, we were low on supplies. My 4 year old and I came up with the color scheme: Everest green, red, blue glitter, white and brown. My son researched Juneteenth on his school provided Chromebook and discovered the flag you see in the top left side of the banner.

We were all happy to learn we had been featured on your platform. The cash payment was significant. They feel supported and that's a beautiful experience in itself. I love the work ya’ll are doing, keep it up.

Juneteenth Art Needed For Commemorative Post

juneteenth art needed.png

Have you made Juneteenth art to commemorate the day? A Little Beacon Blog wants to post a celebratory image for today, but need artwork made by you - it’s your day, your depth. We are looking for black and brown designers for this assignment, as the interpretation of the design is significant. We can only pay $50 for the art. If we get a lot of submissions, we’ll figure it out because we’ll want to show a bunch. ❤️ Please email it to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com, or post it on Insta and tag us!

Juneteenth Events in Beacon, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh And More Including Marches, Cookouts

Winners of ALBB’s 2020 Juneteenth art contest, Cameron and Zora of Millennial_Matriarch and Blue Green Lawns.

Winners of ALBB’s 2020 Juneteenth art contest, Cameron and Zora of Millennial_Matriarch and Blue Green Lawns.

Juneteenth is a critical time in Black History as it commemorates the emancipation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy in 1865 - two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was formally issued. Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black people since the 1800s when it was referred to as “Jubilee Day” but the name changed to Juneteenth in 1890. Juneteenth is also known as Black Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Juneteenth Independence Day or Juneteenth National Freedom Day.

In his daily press conference Wednesday, Governor Cuomo announced he's proposing to make Juneteenth a paid NY State holiday beginning 2021. There are currently 46 states that recognize Juneteenth as a holiday including Texas, the first state to pass this into law in 1979. At the June 15th City Council Meeting in Beacon, Mayor Lee Karyiacou declared Juneteenth official in Beacon.
