In the still dark hours of the early Tuesday morning, September 1, 2026, the Beacon Fire Department responded to a fire that had started on the rear brake and axle area of a tractor-trailer traveling east on I-84 near Exit 41, the exit for Beacon, NY, MidHudson News reported.

Beacon's Fire Chief Thomas Lucchesi told Mid Hudson News that Beacon firefighters got to the truck in 5 minutes and found the truck was "transporting around 30,000 pounds of explosive munitions for the U.S. Department of Defense," the article reported.

When A Little Beacon Blog asked Chief Lucchesi if the truck remained upright the entire time, he responded: “The tractor-trailer remained upright and did not overturn. According to the driver, she observed smoke and fire coming from the rear passenger-side trailer tires. She pulled over, called 911, and attempted to extinguish the fire with a fire extinguisher before the Fire Department arrived.”

Firefighters extinguished the fire before it reached the cargo area holding the explosives. As of 4am Tuesday, no injuries were reported.

New York State Police and New York State Bridge Authority assisted the Beacon Fire Department with the incident, during which traffic was closed both ways.
