Local Woman Stabbed In Her Home On Wolcott; Neighbors Say Domestic

During the news coverage of the arson fire on Wolcott Avenue, and the man found dead in the stream along Teller Avenue near Wolcott (he lived in an apartment house across the street from house that was set on fire on Wolcott), a stabbing injury of a woman in her home also in that area occurred on January 27, 2023. Neighbors familiar with the situation said it was by a man who was known to her, who was possibly emotionally out of balance. The Beacon Police have not confirmed this.

The woman was saved by the Beacon Police and EMS personnel who arrived to treat her. She was taken to a hospital for further treatment and released.

Three days later on January 30, 2023, the Beacon Police Department issued a Press Release stating the condition of the woman, identifying the man, and listing his charges. Sometimes these Press Releases are signed by the publishing officer. This one was not.

The Press Release reads as follows:

“On January 27, 2023, the Beacon Police Department received a call from a female who reported that she had been stabbed in her home on Wolcott Avenue. Officers quickly responded to the scene and located the suspect still inside the home with blood on his clothes. They immediately took him into custody and proceeded inside where they located the victim upstairs.

“She was conscious and alert but bleeding heavily from multiple wouds to her neck area. Officers began rendering aid and called for EMS to respond to the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital by EMS where she was treated and later released in stable condition.

“The suspect was … charged with:

  • Assault in the First Degree (Class B Felony),

  • Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree,

  • Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree,

  • Menacing in the Second Degree and

  • Criminal Obstruction of Creating (All Class A Misdemeanors).

“Max was arraigned in Beacon City Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail.”

While some have asked if crime is up in Beacon, it is important to notice that these stories that are published seem to be connected to each other in terms of timing and location. There is a Police Blotter that has had numerous indications of crime and discomfort, but not all of those items get reported on by local media. Also, not all of the items that go reported in the Police Blotter are released to media outlets who publish them, as A Little Beacon Blog discovered last year while researching the murder of Rene Vivo aka Scout.

In transparency, for the man found dead in the stream, neither A Little Beacon Blog, the Beacon Free Press nor the Highlands Current reported on that until after the raging house fire that happened two days later, when the community waged an outcry for details of his death - which has so far been deemed unrelated to the fire.

But Where Did That Vegan Ice-Cream "Lick The Vegan Stuff" Go?

Since the announcement of the closing of Végétalien, people have asked: “What happened to that amazing vegan ice-cream that was sold inside of the store?”

That vegan ice-cream was Made In Beacon, in various locations, by the company called Lick The Vegan Stuff. At one point, Lick The Vegan Stuff was inside of The Chocolate Studio, a shop also known for partnering with other businesses to rent a bit of space (ex: Denise Gianna Designs and The Village Jerk - who each graduated and moved into their own Main Street storefronts since).

Lick The Vegan Stuff at one point moved to Végétalien, where they remained until November 2022 (remember that time someone opened her freezer and all of her ice-cream melted and she had to do a mega-come-back in like 4 days of making?).

Now, you can find Lick The Vegan Stuff in her soon to be trailer (!!), in Manhattan, and various other locations like at Obercreek Farm.

Keep up with Lick The Vegan Stuff in her Instagram as she works to secure her trailer licensed. Which would really put this vegan ice-cream on the map if she could drive all over the place. Just think of all of the pop-up events she could do. Maybe delivery to you! Or not. Maybe just dry-ice in a box delivered by a carrier to your door.

If you’re a restaurant in town, order from her now please! So we can enjoy her in Beacon easily as well.

Végétalien Closes. Plant-Based Foodies Are Sad. Remains To Be Seen If Food Stays In That Location

Vegan options are very popular in Beacon. Most eateries from pizza to burgers to tacos are incorporating both gluten-free and vegan options into their menus. Nevertheless, running a restaurant is hard. Végétalien, the plant-based eatery on the east end of town near the mountain, announced two weeks ago that they are closing.

As explained in their Instagram post: “It is with mixed emotions that we write to post to notify you that Végétalien will be closing its doors permanently. Our last day of business was January 29th, 2023. We have various store equipment, shelving and fixtures that will be available for purchase as well. If you are interested in any of these items, pease email us at vegetalienbeacon@gmail.com. Lastly, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported our small business throughout the years. We know that there are many stores in the area to choose from and we are honored that you chose Végétalien above the others. We appreciate all of our loyal customers who have helped our store thrive for the past years! Until we meet again!”

Végétalien was started by restaurateur, Kamel Jamal (currently Beacon Bread, Ziatun, formerly Angelino’s in Cold Spring and Titos in Beacon) whose daughter named it after the french name for vegetarian. Végétalien’s current owner Moises purchased the eatery from Kamel and Lena in 2018.

Over time, the famed Beacon-based vegan ice-cream company, Lick The Vegan Stuff, was also based out of Végétalien. Lick The Vegan Stuff left that location in November 2022.

Prior to Végétalien being in that location, the eatery called Raddish with memorable salads was there. It remains to be seen if a food-based business will remain in that location.

TIN SHINGLE
Dear You,
This is a love letter written to all of the hustlers out there. All of the business owners, creators, makers, and organizers. For Valentines Day, you need to hear this.
Creator: you did this. To maintain this, is hard. To maintain this, means your heart needs to be in it every day. You are the main person who believes in you. If you don’t believe in you, things will fall apart. If you don’t believe in you, things you created will dry up.
But they won’t die. Not if your heart is still beating. Not if it’s a good idea. The good idea you know should be made. It just needs a special breath of air. To breathe life back into it. And you will do that every day. And if you need to step away, to take more oxygen for yourself directly, that’s okay. Your creation will be there waiting for you.
You may have new creations on the horizon. Those may replace what you are doing, or they may be in addition. Only you will know how to absorb. You will hire the people you need to. You will move office locations as you need to. You will buy more property as you need to.
You do you, Creator.
We are here for you. To support you and to buy from you.
Create for us. We need you.

925 Wolcott Ave Was Being Renovated To Convert 16 Units to 9 SRO Units, Before Fire

The former boarding house at 925 Wolcott Avenue that burned down as a result of arson on January 3, 2023, was under renovation to convert 16 units to 9 units that would meet SRO definition (Single Room Occupancy in apartments or residential hotels in which low-income or welfare tenants live in single rooms), according to the permit filed by the owner, Yeshia Berger of 925 Wolcott Ave LLC, which was obtained by A Little Beacon Blog via FOIL request. He acquired the title to the property on July 13, 2022, according to the paperwork.

The front porch of 925 Wolcott Avenue.

According to the Application For The Certificate Of Occupancy Or Certificate Of Compliance filed on December 7, 2022, and had an Issue Date from the City of Beacon of December 12, 2022 signed by Building Inspector Bruce Flowers, each unit would have a bathroom and kitchenette, with all new plumbing and electric. A sprinkler system was also to be installed. The estimated cost of construction was written in as $200,000.

An Application for Building Permit was submitted on August 19, 2022 with an Issue Date dated August 26, 2022 signed by previous Building Inspector David Buckley to get new moldings, floors, and plumbing on the front porch/deck. The contractor was designated Olvin Construction out of Monroe, NY on the permit, who held the Workers Compensation Insurance.

On July 19, 2022, an Application For The Certificate Of Occupancy Or Certificate Of Compliance was filed to “rebuild existing CFP - roof to remain - with patch and paint to the interior with new plumbing fixtures.”

More than a month after the fire on January 3, 2023, pieces of the razed house still sit on the property. The arsonist and former tenant of 925 Wolcott Avenue, Brian P. Atkinson, is due in court later in February, unless the hearing is pushed. Mid Hudson News and ALBB first reported that Brian turned himself in after starting the fire, according to people who were at the scene. The Highlands Current later reported that “Police said he walked to the department and turned himself in immediately after starting the fire,” even though that was not written in the Press Release issued by the Beacon Police.

The owner, Yeshia, also owns the boarding house across the street, 916 Wolcott Avenue. That house was recently in the news as being the residence of the man who died after a fall into the stream under Teller Avenue on New Year’s Day. While the situations remain unconnected, both men did frequent Main Street at the local outdoor sidewalk hangout on Teller and Main Street.

BeaconArt's Piano Themed "Keys To The City" Needs Volunteers for Fall 2023

It’s been since 2018 since piano notes twinkled from alleyways, gardens and front lawns during BeaconArts’ city-wide installation, “Keys To The City,” a fiscally sponsored project of BeaconArts. The interactive installation is going to happen again in the Fall of 2023, and they need volunteers to help make it happen.

To refresh our memories, “Keys to To The City” is a collection of decorated pianos placed in outdoor spaces throughout the city. People can sit and play at them whenever the mood inspires them.

Writer Izdihar Dabashi captured the mood in the fall of 2018. The last time the pianos were played, she wrote: “Auburn leaves danced in the wind, wisps of hair and tangles of scarves flit about in the cool weather. Softly, Adele’s voice weaves into the moment creating an ambiance that is undoubtedly autumn in New York. As if singing ‘Hello’ to myself isn’t dramatic enough, the universe seems to encourage my bout of melodrama, as evidenced by the several pianos adorning Main Street. I was tempted to ignore the peculiar sights and continue to sonder, but the tinkling sounds of the pianos rang through the air and lured me to their sights.” Read her full article here, and see pictures of the pianos past.

BeaconArts has put out the call for volunteers. They are looking for volunteers to help with project management and piano logistics. People who are interested are instructed to contact Ian Murdoch here.

People with a variety of skills who want to install and monitor pianos during their weeks on display are encouraged to inquire. Even if you are not super technically handy, there might be something you can do, if this is a volunteer opportunity that matches your desires.

Free School Meals For K-12 Tossed Like A Hot Potato By Governor Hochul

During the height of the pandemic, the federal government allocated funding to feed all students in public schools, regardless of income status, for two years. One need not apply. Caregivers who were on auto-billing for their child’s meals no longer had to worry about if their account had enough money in it to process the re-fill level. Their child just got access to school breakfast and lunch.

After the federal funding for the free meals expired in June 2022, a push began to get the funding back, led in part by Hunger Solutions New York and Community Food Advocates. Lawmakers proposed the “Healthy School Meals for All NY Kids” to Governor Hochul to consider including in New York’s 2023 budget. According to Spectrum News: “That's why lawmakers proposed the Healthy School Meals For All program, asking Gov. Kathy Hochul to commit $200 million to fund free school meals for all students in the next state budget. Sponsor Sen. Michelle Hinchey says that's .01% of the state's total $220 billion budget, and would save families about $140 per school-aged child per month.”

According to their website: “Providing free meals for all students—regardless of income—is a proven strategy to reduce food insecurity, support learning, improve mental and physical health, and bolster educational and economic equity. Yet at the start of this school year, more than 726,000 students in nearly 2,000 schools across the state lost access to free school meals.”

Governor Hochul did not end up including it in the state’s budget, maintaining that the money should continue to come from the federal level. And yet, a spokesperson with the governor's office said in a statement: "In her Executive Budget, Gov. Hochul allocated $34.5 billion in total school aid — the highest level of state aid in history, and fully funded Foundation Aid for the first time." In terms of food, the spokesperson said: "In addition, we are working closely with our federal counterparts and encourage them to reinstate the federal universal meal program that ended last school year,"

With school reaching its 100th day in this academic year, it is unclear what if any effort is being made.

It Was Spring-Like Today!  |  Retail Therapy Guide 2/10/2023

The original title of this email was "It's Valentine's Day Weekend!" And that was written by ALBB's Retail Editor, Teslie. When ALBB's publisher Katie read it, she cringed and blocked her eyes. Because Teslie is a newlywed and so much in love with her best friend, and Katie is in...a different place.

So once again, this triggers the ALBB Trivia Fact of Katie's old college newspaper column (did blogs exist then?) that was a love advice column called "Dear Trudy," where in her first column out the gate, she answered a male's question, where he asked: "I see the same girl every day on the sidewalk on our class schedule, and we always lock eyes. I just want to kiss her. Should I?" Trudy's answer was: "Yes!" which surprised most male readers. Obviously, that act could be taken the wrong way. That aside.

You get to have a Love Advice column here tonight on your Friday. Because you should have love. Even if you don't have love right now. The truth is, you may have told yourself long ago that love and real life do not mix. That the logic of real life could not withstand love. That love would confuse things. And make you not able to live a logical life.

If you said no to love many years ago, and closed yourself off, then I'm here to tell you that there is this thing called "working it out" and "being vulnerable," that therapists seem to know about, and people in Beacon seem to know about because they are tapped into things like that.

While we don't know how love works, it can be considered that if there is something pulling you to a centered place, that results in a desire to understand instead of a desire to be angry, then you may be on to something.

And if it doesn't work out. If you are from different worlds (hello, didn't anyone see The Little Mermaid?!), or if there is a block of some kind, and you can't have the love you feel, then at least you felt. And you tried. And if you cried, that's OK. Because crying, deep sobbing, is an orgasm of the heart that you needed.

Wishing you the smoothest Valentine's Day. Please do treat yourself no matter if you are also treating someone else or not.

What you'll find below is Teslie's original intro for this newsletter. Katie usually spends Valentine's Day at a book store :) And this holiday is one of her favorites. Teslie gives great advice below. Take her up on it.

* * *

Valentine's Day weekend is one of our favorites! It's the perfect excuse to finally make plans with your friends aka Galentine's Day, spend extra time with your significant other, and/or by yourself! Either way, there's definitely no shortage of things to do. Check out the prix fixe menus around town, snag the local chocolates from Håkan, Alps Sweet Shop, The Chocolate Studio or all of them, and treat yourself to something special - maybe a massage, a facial, manicure, or a new outfit, dance classes at Passion - The Adult Dance Studio... you deserve it! Content planning can take many forms. The organization of it can look very different before it makes it to a published platform. Tin Shingle's new Simple Social Content Planner is your monthly and weekly spreadsheet for when a certain post should be written. Looking at this Template is less-involved than looking at Planoly or Hubspot. The purpose it serves is to help you organize before you create a finished post to schedule at your social platforms of choice. For those unfamiliar with Planoly, this is a tool you can use to schedule and post finished Instagram posts in advance. It was created before Instagram allowed for scheduling within its own platform. Members of Tin Shingle can download this template for free. For everyone else, there is a one-time fee, and then unlimited access is available for when updates are published. Glenham Street Sign Serves As PSA: Prevent Freezing Pipes By Dripping Your Water

Beacon had a first run of the freezing weather over the holidays. The heating and plumbing trucks were out. Emergency wait lists were full. Beacon’s City Administrator Chris White advised people to prepare their homes for freezing temperatures during recent City Council meetings. Last year, he urged out of town residents who live or are vacationing long term to turn their heat on a little, as some homes experienced burst pipes when they got too cold. Which means water everywhere and damage.

Be mindful of the seasons and weather. Be proactive when it comes to freezing temperatures and making sure your heat is set at an appropriate temperature to avoid freezing pipes. Especially if you will be away from your home. Claims definitely go up during these times. Nothing worse than coming home to water damage caused by broken pipes.
— Susan Pagones, Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency

Today on K-104.7, Traffic Reporter Christina Lang told listeners about how pipes burst in her parents’ home and caused long term damage with mold growth. Local insurance agency Antalek and Moore is always thinking of you, and wrote this Winter prep checklist with advise. Antalek and Moore’s partner, Susan Pagones advises ALBB readers: “Be mindful of the seasons and weather. Be proactive when it comes to freezing temperatures and making sure your heat is set at an appropriate temperature to avoid freezing pipes. Especially if you will be away from your home. Claims definitely go up during these times. Nothing worse than coming home to water damage caused by broken pipes.”

A street sign in Glenhan serves as a reminder to you prepare your pipes to not freeze and explode during extreme cold temperatures. Here are the most basic and easy tips you can do to prevent your pipes from freezing and exploding water everywhere:

  • Water Dripping:
Drip your water in unused places, like the faucet outside with the snow.

  • Heat and Vacation:
Turn your heat on low when you’re out of town for more than a day.

Valentine's Day Essay: Gushing This Season

Back when I used to have kid/family-themed a column in a newspaper, I would emerge from the holiday months of November/December of not publishing anything (those are my Struggle Months) to bursting open in February for a Valentine’s Day themed column. I gave up the column, but why not publish it here at A Little Beacon Blog? You can print it out to make it “in print!” Otherwise, blog articles do exist forever (or as long as there is electricity and an Internet connection) in pixelated stardust.

This year, the kid-themed Valentine essay will be about tapping into Valentine’s feelings, why they might gush more times than others, and how to keep yourself mushy in order to feel the feelings. This, speaking as a person who does not normally feel the feelings.

PS: For the one reader who loves my grammar (and I say that dripping, overflowing with sarcasm), they will love this meandering-style essay. Buckle up! This one is an emotional roller-coaster.

Finding The Valentine

The valve that has been opened is releasing what seems to be currents of emotions. There is a fear of bleeding out. The desire to shut down is strong.
— ALBB

Step 1 I suppose is finding the Valentine. This person you could be looking at for years and years, or days and days, and all of a sudden, a valve is switched, and the feelings are gushing out. If you never wrote a Valentine to anyone before, you may find yourself writing a Valentine card 5 times over - all with different themes - because the feelings won’t stop. This is for a consensual communication, where you both are on the same page.

Not having found a Valentine since 8th grade, and before that, 1st grade, to find one after decades of life could result in paragraphs and paragraphs of feelings. But why?

The Coats - Where Is Your Coat?

What inspired this column was the ongoing coat issue in my house with my two older children. They either won’t wear them, or they want to wear one, but can’t find the perfect one. This, on the Friday that is starting the arctic winter blast where the temperature will dip to the single digits.

My children both walk to school. My one child looked sad the other day leaving, and I asked them why. They said: “Because it’s so cold - I don’t like walking in the cold. But you can’t drive me because of the other younger children.” Understood. However. This child goes out the door by choice in a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and upgraded slippers, with no hat, scarf or gloves. Despite being surrounded by such accessories.

During the winter holiday, one of the gift themes was finding the perfect coat. The perfect coat must be found for the winter. Through much research, the perfect coat was found! And gifted. But it is now rarely worn.

This results in this feeling of: “But…the perfect thing was found for you…I don’t understand. Why aren’t you wearing it if you are cold?” But they are young children with minds of their own, and have decided that sweatshirts are the wardrobe. And they aren’t alone. Some kids wear coats, and some are in the sweatshirt combo. I could force the child to wear the coat, but that’s not my style. I give up. It pains me to see them cold. And not bundle them up. But I have to let go (though I still get to bundle up my youngest child).

For my middle child, they have several coats (as does the previous child). On the coldest day, suddenly the puffiest, most softest coat was unsatisfactory. The child could not fathom wearing it because in their opinion, it made them look funny and the fabric bothered them. Understood. Respected. I found a rejected jacket from the older child and tossed it on top of the other rejected coats, offering it to the child.

As for my heart - I wasn’t mad or yelling or forcing them to wear the coat. I just gave up. I try to provide the love and comfort, and it’s not taken. They seemed to only care about that I searched for more coats that may or may not exist. So I continued on with my morning. Hoping for the best. Hoping they are happy walking to school in whatever they cobble together, and might change their mind later to bundle up. But if they don’t, I let it go. It’s their choice.

Back To The Gushing Valentine’s Feelings

So when you have all this love stored up, it may not have anywhere to go, if it’s not being absorbed. If you happen to have found a Valentine, they might get all your love. And it might be smothering for them. Who knows?! That’s the only way I can explain this gusher.

How do you get to gush mode?

Stripping One’s Self Of Defensiveness

There is one other factor playing into being able to feel the feelings. Aside from allowing yourself to pour love somewhere if it’s not being absorbed elsewhere. And that is: stripping one’s self of defensiveness.

Melting Defensiveness

If you’re normally a defensive person, like I am, the defensive blocker will make you unable to see clearly, or maybe even allow you to express how or what you are feeling. Defensiveness can happen for a number of reasons, including low self-esteem, and fear of rejection. I just learned about Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). I am overjoyed with this discovery, because I don’t feel so alone in my feelings anymore. I’m not even at the tip of the iceberg with researching it, but it’s mentioned so that others can look into it too.

Because I was recognizing a defensiveness in me with someone I cared about, I was trying to melt it away. So that I wouldn’t say sarcastic responses, or lash out. I was asking myself: “Why did I say that? What am I really feeling? What words actually describe what I was feeling?” Sometimes it takes days to peel the onion to figure out this simple answer. Journaling is very key for this. And cardio exercise.

But once you do dig down, the answer is there! And it’s in a very vulnerable place. With the help of information shared by Dr. Jaimee Arnoff and Moraya Seeger DeGeare at BFF Therapy (find Moraya also at The Paired App), I’ve been learning that being and showing vulnerability is a good thing. And if shown to a person who responds gently to it, even better. And results in more vulnerability getting shown. Which feels very mushy and uncomfortable. And if you keep repeating, you will have very many words for that Valentine.

Self-Deprecation Is Really Harmful

Recognizing self-deprecation as part of your love-language or social norm is important. It needs to be edited out.

I am fluent in my languages that are not worldly related, like sarcasm and passive aggression. Another language I am fluent in is self-deprecation. I thought it was just in my family, but I’ve noticed it in women in general. Maybe mothers in particular. It’s seems to have become a requirement in a greeting. One mother can’t greet another mother without pointing out how there is snot on her child’s lip because their nose won’t stop running. Or about their hair being a mess. Or that they haven’t showered in days (shower! shower every day! the hot water feels so good! unless you have active eczema and then you need a steroid cream…so go see Witch Hazel in Beacon for preventative cream options before it gets to steroid level).

Self-deprecation results in 2 people being hurt: yourself, and a person you are dealing with. If you don’t value yourself, because you have trained yourself to put yourself down, then you’re not going to value the person across from you, who very likely may be a person who identifies female. This is how women sometimes cut down other women, or punish them in passive ways.

If you’re doing you, and you’re looking good and feeling good, do not cut that down. Enjoy yourself. If you did a great job at something, remember it. Do not cut it down. Embrace it. Celebrate it. Have caution of course, but let yourself shine. Dim yourself if you need to for a moment. But ditch the self-deprecation as a social norm.

What To Do With The Gushing Valentine

Not sure what to do with the recent gushing, as a person new to feeling feelings. The valve that has been opened is releasing what seems to be currents of emotions. There is a fear of bleeding out. The desire to shut down is strong. So. Will keep reading Secrets of Divine Love and will keep the faith and do the things the book suggests, like pray or meditate, and ground one’s feet while in those focused moments to find calm, melt, and open. And schedule a session with my therapist to discuss the feelings in order to better process them.

The Costellos Release Their 6th Album, "Hold On," And Share Their Love Story On ALBB's Podcast

Recorded live in the old Citizens Bank on Beacon's Main Street during the inaugural Beacon Bonfire festival, The Costellos sat with Brandon and Katie of the "Wait, What Is That?" podcast to discuss their latest album, "Hold On," which contains a love song heavy with longing written and sung by Lynn Johansen for her husband, Bobby Costello, inspired by 7 weeks of being apart for travel. During this episode, The Costellos previewed two tracks from their new album, and shared the songs' backstories. The Costellos are local and nation-wide performers, but also write love songs for wedding ceremonies of friends and family.

They shared their own love story with the pod. Listen to it here.

Spirit Of Beacon Day Opens Web Shop For T-Shirts & Hats As They Come Out Of Hibernation

The Spirit of Beacon Day Committee has been a little quiet since the whirlwind event production that was the Spirit of Beacon’s 45th Day last September 25th, 2022. Doing all they could to coordinate the day so that it wouldn’t crack, the Committee immediately went back to their jobs in teaching, designing, grocery storing, coaching, writing, and everything else free spirits do to pay the bills in Beacon and beyond.

With Shipping and Free Pickup now in place, the Spirit of Beacon Committee has opened their web shop for online orders of the t-shirts and hats - while supplies last! Free Pickup is an option for locals. In true Beacon fashion for a new business or enterprise, the Open Hours for pickup are selective and read like an Onion article: “Hours for pickup are varied and not consistent. Generally range from 12-2pm on the weekday, and sometimes on the weekend. For Free Pickup, please email spiritofbeacon@gmail.com after you order to see when Katie (the Spirit of Beacon Committee President) is at the co-work desk to give you your order. Alternatively, she will email you. Or find your place of residence to put it in your mailbox and disappear.”

The logo was designed by Kim Dei Dolori, and t-shirts designed by Allie Bopp. Design direction for all from Katie James, Inc. The hats were produced by Joker Ink, and the shirts produced by Remark Printing.

Will the t-shirts be a new color this year? Who knows! Only you can get the original design now. And sport that hat. Click here to shop now.

Are You Still In Hibernation? Enjoy That Hibernation...And Eat And Shop This... | Retail Therapy Guide 1/27/2023

Dear Beaconites:

THE RESTAURANTS DEPEND ON YOU.

If any of you complain that Beacon has become a "bedroom community" where only tourists keep it alive, ALBB can tell you right. now. that YOU have the power to sustain us throughout the week. But you might not be coming out!

Silly. Lots of you complain - or give the reason - "Oh, well, I don't come out mid-week because everyone is closed! I can't remember what day they are open!" True, Dear Reader. Usually Tuesdays are the worst days in Beacon for places to be closed.

But. Places like Homespun and MOD and Ziatun and Max's on Main and Hudson Valley Food Hall have been trying their best to stay open 7 days for you, and for that, they must be rewarded. By You. You really need to go to them on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Their sales need to go up on those days! The weekends are flooded, yes, but the restaurants and boutiques cannot survive alone on that. They need you! You need them!

PRO TIP: Order ahead. If you are working in an office in Beacon, and you say: "But ALBB, I only get a few moments for my lunch. I take a brisk walk down Main Street, and then I'm back in my building!"

ALBB can tell you: "Order ahead, silly! Duck in on that fast walk and pick up!"

PS: This newsletter is late because, well, ALBB got cats (3) from Beans Cat Cafe this week, and we published the breaking news story that the City of Beacon has finally released the name of the man who died in the woods (the rock-bed stream, it is now confirmed) along Teller Avenue. Read it here.

Scroll down, and form your menu and shopping plan.

Are you a restaurant who is not on the menu?
You can change that right now by advertising.

Are you a patron of a restaurant or boutique, and love ALBB, and want to see your favorite shop advertise? Tell them! They need your encouragement. We can only continue publishing with the financial support of readers and businesses. Thank you!

ALBB is small but mighty, and people love us.  And we love them. xoxoxoxo

City of Beacon Identifies Walter Miranda As The Man Who Died In The Woods Along Teller Avenue - No Foul Play Suspected So Far

On Thursday, January 26, 2023, the City of Beacon has released the name of the man who died on New Years day in the woods in a stream that runs along side Teller Avenue. It has been 26 days since the man’s name has been publicly released, yet some locals did know who the man was. While there was speculation for the cause of death, it surprised some that identification was not confirmed. Beacon’s City Administrator Chris White emailed the press release to ALBB (often we are with our young kids or dog/cat pets or at the dentist, so emails are appreciated).

According to a press release written by the City of Beacon’s Chief of Police Sands E. Frost - one of the most comprehensive press releases written to date - the man who passed away was Walter Miranda, age 58 who resided at 916 Wolcott Avenue, which is a multi-unit apartment house located across the street from the house that was torched two days later by someone else, owned by the same landlord. The incidents have never been connected.

The stream that runs under Teller Avenue, near the area where the City of Beacon Police were called to respond to the suspected deceased body, who was identified as Walter Miranda, age 58.

According Chief Frost, no foul play was suspected after a dual-investigation by the City of Beacon Police and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office. Chief Frost stated: “Everything regarding the joint investigation is pointing to Mr. Miranda's death being related to a fall causing a head injury.” The stream that Walter was found in was a shallow, rock-bed stream. Exposed rocks were in several areas. If one were to cross over the barricade near the sidewalk on Teller Avenue (across from Ballet Arts), and fall into the stream, with one’s head hitting the rocks, that would be hard fall.

According to locals who knew Walter, he was a skilled carpenter who passed into Beacon. He had friends on the street and beyond. He worked from job to job doing carpentry work during the seasons.

Chief Sands Frost’s press release has been re-published in full below:

On January 1, 2023 at approximately 11:46am, the City of Beacon Police Department received a call regarding a person believed to be deceased in a stream located in a wooded area just off Teller Ave. near Henry St. This was called in by a subject who was with his family. The City of Beacon Police Department responded, along with the City of Beacon Fire Department, Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps and Ambulnz.

EMS workers advised the subject was indeed deceased and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office was contacted and they responded. A joint investigation into the death was started immediately by the City of Beacon Police Department and the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office.

The deceased person was identified as Walter Miranda. He is a 58-year-old male who resided at 916 Wolcott Avenue in the City of Beacon.

An autopsy was conducted on Mr. Miranda on January 3, 2023 by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office. The City of Beacon Detective Bureau spent many days examining security footage from area cameras and interviewing associates and family members of the deceased. Important information was gathered regarding social interactions, habits, any chemical dependencies, etc.

Although the Dutchess County Medical Examiner's Office has not finalized its report yet due to awaiting toxicology results, everything regarding the joint investigation is pointing to Mr. Miranda's death being related to a fall causing a head injury. There are no other signs of a struggle or any other injuries indicating an assault.

I know community members get frustrated when something like this occurs in the area and not much information is available right away. We owe it to the victim and to the victim's family and friends to be as thorough as possible investigating any death that may seem suspicious. This process can take quite a while to complete. Our heart goes out to Walter's family and friends. We would also like to thank everyone who cooperated with us in the investigation.

Sands E. Frost
Chief of Police
