...and....GO...Retail Therapy Guide 12/21/2021

Friends!! You've been in the hustle and the bustle that is the end of December. We've seen you out there, filling the shops of Beacon with your hungry eyes, delighted at the curated experiences shop owners have created for your careful gift giving.

Last year was so crushing, yet we stuck together and  got creative and supported the heck out of our business and nonprofit friends. We have done it again this year, during the same pandemic, different stresses (like the rapid rise in demand for COVID-19 tests that arrived to the Beacon PD that will most likely arrive again at some point).

This year, you all cared hard. So hard. You love this community and you want to see it stay open and inclusive for all budgets to rent and own homes here. You are doing what you can to learn about your community and your neighbors - to broaden your life so that the goodness can expand to lifestyles you have not experienced yet.

That is the beauty of Beacon, and we here at ALBB are honored to serve you. ALBB is a free publication to all and always will be. We make money in different ways, like through website design, branding and strategy, and sponsorships. Thank you to all of our sponsors now and over the years. Thank you Poughkeepsie Day School for coming on as a new sponsor this week! All sponsors allow us to report freely and in the directions needed. ALBB does accept contributions from readers, and we really are just so grateful for all of your readership support.

Because you are so AMAZING, and you wish for more Traffic Safety, we can report that there is more Traffic Safety coming for Xmas - more Stop Signs are arriving in select back roads. Several articles are coming out in the name of Traffic Safety. Some sad. Some mad. Some glad. Thank you for being along for the ride. Pun intended.

xoxo

A Silent Night Getting Closer :: Retail Therapy Guide 12/17/2021

The countdown to Christmas is really real and if you're still trying to figure out what to get someone, Beacon is filled with the best shops, and what's better than supporting local & shopping small?! See ALBB's Shopping Guide to better organize your thoughts/find exactly what you're looking for!

This cutie-pie photo is of a Pre-K project from Glenham Elementary! See ALBB's Instagram Stories for a closeup of the little pine-cone snow-person up close!

PS: The COVID-19 count in Dutchess County has doubled what it was in the summer. In August, ALBB sent you a notice that the active case count was in the high 700s or low 800s. Today, the active case count is 1,487 people, with 68 people in the hospital, and 65 active cases in Beacon. In East Fishkill, there are 213 active cases. This article explores what Dutchess County is doing.

Have a blessed Friday :)

Show Up and Speak Out for Good Cause Eviction Protections
Day: Monday, December 20, 2021
Time: Caroling for Tenant's Rights at 6pm at Pohill Park & City Council Meeting at 6:30pm at City Hall
Location: Pohill Park & City Hall, Beacon, NY
Masks Required
The organizers of this outdoor event have been regularly showing up at City Council Meetings to pressure the administration to do more to create affordable housing situations. Beacon's Mayor Lee Kyriacou has wanted to accelerate one of his tools in the tool box - making building small apartments on one's property easier (aka Accessory Dwellings Units ADUs). His rational is that the apartments can rent for a low price because they are in theory "small." Most Councilmembers don't see how this is possible, and in fact, want Beacon to pursue enforcement of illegal Airbnbs (owners own more than one property and are short term renting those additional properties). Members of the public have been showing up to demand that the focus be on passing a law called Good Cause Eviction, as another layer of protection for renters. More and more, renters are being pushed out of Beacon, replaced by those who can pay higher prices. Say the organizers: "The City has been ignoring the housing crisis. Don't let this Be a Silent Night for tenant protections!!"

All 3 media outlets covering Beacon (Beacon Free Press, Highlands Current, ALBB) stopped and focused on the new mural on the Dutchess County DMV building on Main Street that is thanking veterans. It is a daily reminder to smile, say thank you, outreach to a veteran if you know one or know how. In the Beacon Free Press version of this coverage, catch an interview with the muralist as she paints it.

Beacon Free Press Columnist and Veteran Tom Zurhellen writes enthusiastically almost every week about how to help veterans. In this week's column, he points out that nearly 40,000 veterans are homeless (the Military Times cites 37,252). In Beacon, one might not know who is a homeless veteran as they walk by someone. So as you walk by the Memorial Building especially, give someone a sunny "Hello."

An easy way to help make veterans in this area more comfortable is to donate to their food pantry in Castle Point. We have details on how to do this in A Little Beacon Blog's Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen Guide here.

Speaking of the Memorial Building, this Veterans Day, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Pvt Wm. B. Wilson Post 666 hosted their annual ceremony, which you can watch here on the City of Beacon's Vimeo channel. VFW Post 666 celebrated their 100th year this year, and were presented with Proclamations from New York State, which you can read about here.

HOMESPUN
232 Main Street, Beacon, NY

Homespun is a specialty wine seller as part of their regionally popular restaurant. Owner Joe Robitaille earned early experience at Montague Wine & Spirits in Brooklyn Heights, moving to a sommelier position with Il Buco in Manhattan. Joe was raised in Buffalo, NY, and educated in Charleston, SC. He moved to New York City to pursue a Master of Fine Arts in Poetry at Brooklyn College, where he discovered his love for wine. But not just wine - the agriculture of wine - after a placement with WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms). When the original Homespun was for sale, Joe and his wife Kate fell in love with the opportunity, and moved their family to Beacon. Joe and the staff have been developing the wine side of Homespun ever since. Find out more >

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Ignasi Segul / Vinyes Singulars / Pim Pam Pink 2020 / Catalonia, Spain - While this meets every definition of biodynamic Natural Wine, it is also, remarkably, the result of the 600th grape harvest performed on this Penedes estate by the family behind Vinyes Singulars, who have lived on and worked this soil since the year 1405. Made with blend of organic, biodynamically farmed Xarel.lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Malvasia Sitges, Garnatxa Blanca, Sumoll Tinto and Sumoll Blanc, each variety added to the fermentation vat separately as it becomes ready to harvest, spontaneously fermented on skins, bottled unfined and unfiltered with no additions whatsoever, this is almost pulpy in texture with a pronounced but not aggressive acidity, some tannic grip, a nose of peaches and pink grapefruit, earth and slate, herbs and the brighter cooking spices, with surprisingly soft flavors of citrus and stone fruits and a very long finish. Natty refreshment! Follow @dirtybacchus for all wine reviews!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Ai Weiwei, “1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows,” trans. Allan Barr from Binnacle!
“Remembering, too, is a form of resistance. In documenting the past, he is also repudiating the country’s generations of imposed amnesia. ‘After all the convulsions that China had experienced, genuine emotions and personal memory were reduced to tiny scraps and easily replaced by the discourse of struggle and continuous revolution,’ Ai writes. In ‘1000 Years of Joys and Sorrows,’ Ai does not allow his own scraps to remain buried. To unearth them is an act of unburdening, an open letter to progeny, a suturing of past and present. It is the refusal to be a pawn — and the most potent assertion of a self.” -The New York Times _

Remembering and Seeking :: The Retail Therapy Guide 9/10/2021

Things To Do In BeaconGuide.png
Tomorrow (Saturday) is 9/11, the culmination of September days leading up to this moment, mixed with first day of school excitement and raw emotions that come with that for parents, kids, educators and staff. Happy Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year that happened this week, and Happy Muḥarram, the Islamic New Year that happened in August.

This year is the 20th Anniversary of 9/11, and circumstances are very different. Americans and the world watched the departure of American troops from Afghanistan, and have been learning about the varied emotions that is bringing to veterans and people who have been investing in Afghanistan to be part of building infrastructure and societal systems in Afghanistan. American women watching Afghan women protest the Taliban is opening a new chapter in this "war on terror." Does the war on terror include all skin colors, including those on January 6th at the U.S. Capitol?

Seeking a perspective from other people this year might be something to consider when deeply reflecting on the loss that occurred that day. Consider reading this article on Deadline from the makers of "Ramy," a show on Hulu starring Ramy Youssef (winner of a Golden Globe and Peabody Award) and producer Maytha Albassen: "‘Ramy’ Star & Producer On 9/11 Aftermath, Arab American Muslims & A Real Bite Into “Strawberries”"

Local Beaconite author Olivia Abel has been working at Guidposts, and just published a story on the Fireboat McKean that saved hundreds of people that day, has the strangest history of always being in the right place at the right time, despite being decommissioned. The fireboat is being turned into a floating museum. Maybe we'll see it up here in Beacon?

Olivia starts the article out with: "I heard lots of stories on 9/11. I was a reporter at People magazine in New York City then; that day we scrapped the weekly issue that was slated to close that night and put out a special commemorative 9/11 issue instead. I reported on the phone, hearing harrowing tales of regular people on hijacked planes calling to say goodbye to their loved ones. I reported from the streets in midtown Manhattan, where dazed New Yorkers milled about telling me about narrow escapes, missing loved ones and amazing stories of strangers taking people into their cars and their homes. By the time I left the office at 5:30 a.m. the following day, the sun was dawning on a city—and a world—that would never be the same. My mind was full of incredible stories of unimaginable tragedy, as well as unimaginable heroics.

"But until recently, I had never heard a story about an amazing boat that rescued hundreds of people on that fateful day." The firefighters on boat rescued people in the darkness of the fallen towers, and was able to pump water from the Hudson River when water main pipes had broken. It could pump the equivalent of 18-20 fire engine trucks. Read her article on the Fireboat here.

Cupcakes and the Retail Therapy Guide 3/19/2021

Happy Weekend To You!

We are going to kick this weekend newsletter off with a picture of...carrot cake cupcakes, because cupcakes are good and happy. These are from Homespun, and available to order online to reserve yours (we swiped 3 of them after taking this photo, so...)

Most importantly, however, we wanted to address Atlanta and what our Asian friends in Beacon are experiencing as reactions to this unfold. What hasn't been spoken about much locally is how friends whose families are from Japan, or China, or the Philippines or other areas are feeling, or what kind of encounters they have endured while walking on sidewalks since the pandemic started and a former president attempted to connect a pandemic with a region.

We are quietly hearing from our friends, and they are asking for support. They want to see their friends say supportive things in social media, and to denounce things like a police captain explaining that a murderer had a "bad day." That captain was later discovered to have posted his own belief of the region connection to the pandemic, and even supported t-shirts of it.

Not sure where to start? Try asking your friends where their families are from, to get more comfortable with regions. Next, listen to this webinar with Moraya Seeger DeGeare, a Beaconite who is Black, Japanese and white, and engages in talking about race issues in a safe space.

It's Time...Ice Cream Shops In Beacon!

ice-cream-opening-2021-MAIN.png

The weather is getting warmer and you know what that means… it’s time for ICE-CREAM (although we are truly big fans all year round)! A reader already wrote to us about it on Thursday: “Urgent question: When is Ron’s opening?” By Friday afternoon, the Beacon Creamery had happy patrons sitting outside of it on their carved wooden bear bench.

People are gearing up to stand in socially distant lines (remember, don’t over-crowd!) to begin practicing how to order ahead from an ice cream shop, if they offer it. It is time to revisit Beacon’s ice-cream shops, as the spring weather has everyone itching to get outside in the sunshine.

The Beacon Creamery

The Beacon Creamery is located at 134 Main St in Beacon, NY and they have mouth-watering flavors that you need to try now! Some include, “New York, New York” which includes cappuccino Kahlua, hot fudge, whipped cream, and raspberry sauce. They also have floats, ice cream sundaes, specialties, tipsy shakes, and regular ice cream with an option to add WINE ice cream for $2.00!

Pictured: Blue Panda

Pictured: Blue Panda

Ron’s Ice Cream

Ron’s Ice Cream is located at 298 Fishkill Ave in Beacon, NY and they have all of the fun flavors you want like Birthday Cake or Cookies and Cream. And always sprinkles. Some special flavors include Chocolate Moose Tracks, Graham Central Station, Crazy Vanilla, Cookies n Cream, and many more! They also carry sundaes, specialty sundaes, flurries, milkshakes, slushies, and more. Oh, plus, they have hotdogs, burgers, snacks, sandwiches, and sides!

The parking lot is small for line crowding during a pandemic. Last year, Ron’s initiated a call-in service with no walk-up service. ALBB does not have word yet on how they will do it this year. Stay tuned!

Zora Dora’s

Zora Dora’s Micro Batch Ice Cream And Paletas is located at 201 Main St in Beacon, NY, and makes ice creams and sorbets in the form of paletas! If you don’t know what a paleta is, it’s a frozen treat on a stick! Their handmade products are produced in small batches every day and they source and handpick the freshest seasonal ingredients available. They also offer catering and cart rentals!

Pictured: Vegan Chocolate Orange

The Chocolate Studio

The Chocolate Studio doesn’t only have delicious chocolates and signature treats, but they also have ice cream! Vegan flavors too. You can pick-up vegan and gluten-free treats (or nonvegan/gluten-free) OR they ship nationwide! Sadly, ice-cream is excluded from the shipping part so you will have to stop in the store for that! But you’ll want to! So many flavors, you might have to get a few.

Yankee Clipper Diner

You can also stop in the Yankee Clipper Diner for ice-cream! They have a few sundaes on their menu, including the Waffle Sundae, which is a freshly baked Belgian waffle with 2 scoops of ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, sprinkles, walnuts, and a cherry on top! I mean, this could be your breakfast! Add additional toppings for only $1.

Elementary School Opening Info and The Retail Therapy Guide - 3/5/2021

As we head into the weekend, the Beacon City School District announced today that they have been planning for and are anticipating a re-open of the Elementary Schools to a 4-day a week schedule for those who want it, starting in April. Remote-only will continue for those who want to remain at home, while the district is hiring an additional teacher to support remote-only children, according to the Reopening Slides presented by Superintendent Landahl.

Dr. Landahl mentioned that an increase in spread in virus had not occurred with the current in-person learning model, with safety measures put into place, like masking, social distancing and contact tracing. However, he stressed that "there has been an increase of mental health concerns among our students," citing a New York Times survey of scientists and doctors who study infectious disease in young children. Access Dr. Landahl's entire presentation here, where the plan is broken down into easy bullet points.

The Label Foundation Basketball Club Fundraiser

Look At This Dog...Retail Therapy Guide 2/26/2021

Hello Beaconites!
And Hello Other People Visiting here!
Happy Weekend.

A couple things before we get to the good shopping, eating and donating that is in Beacon:
  • Rents are on the rise in Beacon, due in part to NYC friends moving here. Which is fine! Come on up. But. This real life Beaconite dog friend is kicking off our new series on Affordable Housing, and what that means. Outside of required "affordable housing" below market units required in buildings sometimes. Pictured here is his shocked expression at receiving the news that their rent was to be increased by 12% in a Beacon apartment. Other stories are in the article.
  • Driving. Not sure who is taking what liberties with driving like crazy people on Main Street, but we don't drive around public transportation buses on Main Street while they are servicing passengers, nor do we do U-Turns anywhere. If you see my car doing it - check who is in the driver seat. Could be a hubby. If you're from NYC or NJ, please know that Beacon streets don't follow the same rules.
Classes and Camps: Spring is coming, you can feel it, right? We'll get more snow, but wheels are turning on how to plan for Spring and Summer. If you run a business that offers classes, ALBB really wants to list them for you in our Kids + Adult Classes Guides! Main Street businesses get a basic listing for free (just address and web link). As part of our advertising program starting at $100/month, businesses can have their classes with days, times and descriptions listed out. It will be one of the best marketing investments you make, and you'll be contributing to this publication, which allows us to keep publishing. Thank you to our sponsors now!

The Label Foundation Basketball Club Fundraiser
Day

Location: GoFundMe
The Label Foundation started in the Summer of 2020, at the height of the protest marches in Beacon. One of the founding members is John Galloway Jr., who back then decided to run for a vacated seat on the the Beacon Board of Education, and was appointed. We will complete this mission by giving back to our community, pushing the envelope creatively, using our platform to express positive content, and leading by example through our brotherhood."

This fundraiser is to introduce their Basketball Club! "We have vowed to bring people from all walks of life together to guide the youth in the right direction- and that’s what we’re doing. Due to the times, inner-city and underprivileged kids have not had the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities within a safe environment for nearly a year.

Annual Soup For Greens Fundraiser
Day
: Sunday, February 28, 2021
Time: 10am-2pm
Location: Beacon Farmers Market, 413 Main Street, Memorial Building
From the Beacon Farmers Market: "We are so delighted to have Virginia Piazza Pottery as a regular and devoted supporter of Soup4Greens! Her work is well-loved in our community. Come find and buy her bowls this Sunday as part of the generous donations we have received for this event.

"Curious as to why all of this matters? Last summer, between the Beacon and Newburgh farmers’ markets, more than $2300 worth of fresh, free produce made it into the hands of people who need it, on top of what they were able to purchase using Snap or their expendable income.

"This effort was made possible by the #Greens4Greens program created by Green Geen Beacon and Common Ground Farm and this is the program that will directly benefit from every dollar made on Sunday. Fresh food is a universal right. Please help us bring much needed nourishment to our community."

A message from @binnaclebooks, "Just as this season is full of spring’s potential, one might think of these shelves like the ground in late winter, scattered with slumbering things and things soon to sprout. They hardly even need your tending, just a little participation. They thrive on your willingness to connect with the narratives that others have laid out at other times, some remote, some recent. One might look at these shelves and think: so much is inevitable and we’re in it, all of it, together."

BINNACLE BOOKS

321 Main Street, Beacon
Brontez Purnell, “100 Boyfriends”

“Transgressive, foulmouthed, and brutally funny, Brontez Purnell’s ‘100 Boyfriends’ is a revelatory spiral into the imperfect lives of queer men desperately fighting the urge to self-sabotage. As they tiptoe through minefields of romantic, substance-fueled misadventure—from dirty warehouses and gentrified bars in Oakland to desolate farm towns in Alabama—Purnell’s characters strive for belonging in a world that dismisses them for being Black, broke, and queer. In spite of it—or perhaps because of it—they shine.

Armed with a deadpan wit, Purnell finds humor in even the darkest of nadirs with the peerless zeal, insight, and horniness of a gay punk messiah. Together, the slice-of-life tales that writhe within ‘100 Boyfriends’ are an inimitable tour of an unexposed queer underbelly. Holding them together is the vision of an iconoclastic storyteller, as fearless as he is human.”

ANTALEK & MOORE INSURANCE AGENCY
340 Main Street, Beacon

We have got some SNOW! And there may be more on the way so here's some friendly reminders from Antalek & Moore as you head out and shovel:

*Push rather than lift. Pushing the snow with the shovel instead of lifting can help reduce the strain on your body. Bend your knees and use your legs when possible.
*Choose your shovel wisely. Ergonomically-designed shovels can help reduce the amount of bending you have to do.
*Hit the pause button. Pace yourself and be sure to take frequent breaks. Consider taking a break after 20 to 30 minutes of shoveling, especially when the snow is wet.
*Wear layers. Dress in layers and remove them as you get warm to help maintain a comfortable body temperature.
*Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated while shoveling.
