Beacon Open Studios Is This Weekend - Studios Open To Public - Now Includes Film and Music

The time has finally arrived for Beacon Open Studios, one of the best ways to explore all over Beacon because you have 44 different excuses of where you can go. That’s right. If you liked the City Wide Yard Sale, you will love Beacon Open Studios, which offers 44 different locations - some residential - for you to see inside the minds of artists you may never have heard of before.

All in all, there are 60 visual artists participating within the locations, for this 15th year of Beacon Open Studios. Film and music opportunities are also incorporated into this year’s festivities. Artist studios and group shows at local galleries will be open 12-6 pm Saturday, July 22, and Sunday, July 23. This is your only weekend to experience it, so get a plan.

The Opening Reception on Friday, July 21, 6-9pm is at 4 Hanna Lane, Beacon, NY, with live music by Aubrey Haddard at 8 pm. This event is free to the public.

As a ticketed event, there is a collection of screenings featuring short films and videos by local artists and filmmakers, which happens on Saturday and Sunday, featuring Story Screen and Beacon Film Society showcasing at the Yard and the KuBe Art Center. See schedule for Music and for Film for all the details. Have this map open on your phone for more artists and locations.

Map The Studios - Head Out

Find the artists on the map at BeaconOpenStudios.com. You can’t go everywhere, so this will involve tough choices in your limited time. Or, maybe if you plot it out right, you could hit everywhere!

If we had to make a priority based on time and what are the most rare locations you can get into, ALBB would make this our path. In no particular order. But we’d make the list and then see where our wheels or feet took us:

Ethan Cohen Gallery (aka Old Beacon High School)

211 Fishkill Avenue
Normally not open to the public, unless for art exhibits or those getting a barber cut from Lucky Longo. Featured in the Beacon Free Press this week was Allison Walker for her letterpress.

PopMart Beacon Art Center

45 Beekman Street (near the MTA train station)
This has a special vibe, where a few artists have their studios. You can feel the creations in here. Normally, this is an out-of-the-way-spot, so Beacon Open Studios is a good excuse to go down there.

Rick Rogers

15 East Main Street (behind Trax at 1 East Main - that’s a good combo)
This studio is located near the Fishkill Creek. Like, you’ll feel the vibrations of the rushing water. Requires stairs. Inside, you may see works in progress, or finished pieces. If you’ve walked over that bridge near The Roundhouse, then you have passed this studio many times. Now is a great chance to venture down the stairs to explore inside.

Paulette Myers-Rich at the No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works

469 Main Street
Paulette and her partner converted this storefront into their live-work space. Letterpress lovers will enjoy this space. Whatever you find inside that is on display for Beacon Open Studios, will most likely be something rare.

Yangzi Huang

86 Old Glenham Road
Basically, we are recommending this studio because it is on Old Glenham Road. Going there will introduce you to the Glenham area of town, which is very far off the beaten path and requires a car. Exploring art this way definitely exposes you to different types of art you didn’t realize you were looking for.

There are so many more locations to see. Check out the map here, and plot your destinations.

Beacon Open Studios Is Back! This Weekend! July 22-24th - Events All Weekend

If you're new to town, you may not have experienced Beacon Open Studios, an always evolving interactive art experience that happens once a year. It is the one time that you get to wander around Beacon to find yourself inside of an artist's studio. You get to see their tools, smell their mixtures, and maybe see some artists in action.

Beacon Open Studios took quite a blow during the shutdown of the pandemic. As with all things wonderful in Beacon, this is a volunteer effort, where leadership can change from time to time. New energy came in this year to produce this event for you, led by artist  Darya Golubina.

Her preferred medium is oil paint or graphite but some of you may know her as “the hand," handling tiny little masterpieces in the photos she takes for Beacon’s Tiniest Gallery. The miniature gallery is a project she helped start with her friends when the isolation of the pandemic took over and they craved connection to their community. When she’s not painting or documenting the gallery’s newest acquisition, she photographs life-size humans at a studio she manages in NYC. Born in the Ukraine; raised in Brooklyn; graduated from SVA. Darya says Beacon, "feels like home."

Bringing back Beacon Open Studios certainly helps Beacon feel like home to all who live here.

HOW TO EXPERIENCE BEACON OPEN STUDIOS

Artists And Their Studios Wanted: Registration For Beacon Open Studios 2020 Going On Now

beacon_open_stu.jpg

Registration for Beacon Open Studios (BOS) 2020 is now open and you can sign up as an artist for this year. BOS 2020 will take place the weekend of May 15-17, 2020, which is not Second Saturday weekend, for those keeping track. This gives the city-wide art exploration event its own space to stretch without competing with the prior weekend’s schedule. This event is open to everyone. Some participating artists are professionals in other fields who commute to other cities and towns during the week, and only show off their passionate works in their studios here in Beacon.

In other words, this could be your only chance all year to see the work of these artists. And see behind the curtain. Registration closes April 8, 2020. A Little Beacon Blog is a proud sponsor once again of this event.

What Is Beacon Open Studios?

Once a year, artists of Beacon, New York, open their art studios to the public. This free, city-wide, weekend-long event has become one of the largest of its kind in the Hudson Valley. This year marks their 12th Anniversary! This event is an opportunity for the public to see how local artists’ art gets made.

In the past, spaces have included garages, sheds, apartments, offices, and other nontraditional venues of viewing art. It’s a fun way to get connected with your community and learn more about local artists, some of whom are famous nation- or even worldwide. You can pick up a map at various locations. Identify an open studio by a large red dot on a yard sign out in the lawn.

While Beacon celebrates its local artists all year long, the Beacon Open Studios weekend is special because once a year, the artists of Beacon open their art studios to the public. This free, citywide, weekend-long event has become one of the largest of its kind in the Hudson Valley. A Little Beacon Blog is happy to once again be a sponsor for Beacon Open Studios, the weekend of May 17-19, 2019.

Sneak Peek Into Performances and Art

The artists have been promoting their studios and exhibits in anticipation of this weekend. A few interesting pieces crossed our inbox, so we’re spotlighting them here on the blog.

Visit the Beacon Open Studios website for a directory and map of participating artists, and you can plan out your visits. The organizers even offer four different tour suggestions to help you navigate through the area. You can also pick up a brochure and map at various businesses along Main Street. You can also wing it on your own, and just follow the red dots that will be all over the city.

A-Y/Dancers Perform at KuBe (aka the Old Beacon High School)

Included with the open studios will be a live performance from the A-Y/Dancers at the KuBe Theater in the old Beacon High School on Saturday, May 18, at 5 pm and 7 pm. They will also perform at the Ethan Cohen Gallery beforehand in the hallway.

As part of their inaugural season, A-Y/Dancers licensed a unique “MinEvent” from the Merce Cunningham Trust. The performance, titled “Embodied Time: A Collaborative Performance,” is an arrangement of excerpts from works that Cunningham choreographed across three decades, from the ‘60s to the ‘90s, strung together by Jean Freebury, a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. A unique score composed and performed by sound artist Mark Trecka will consist of audio recordings of the dancers’ bodies during rehearsals, transferred to cassette, but into loops, and amplified back into the room in real time. In a synchronistic approach, artist Joseph Ayers created a unique animation that samples the dancers’ movements recorded during rehearsals, and then projects the resulting abstraction as a backdrop to the live performance.

Having a hard time imagining all of that? Below is a teaser video of what you will see live on Saturday!

Beacon Open Studios 2019 Is Coming...Sneak Preview Of Artists To Visit

ALBB_OpenStudios_2019.jpg

As the first bulbs of spring start coming up, artists in Beacon are busy preparing for the big day when everyone and anyone is invited to step inside of participating artist studios during Beacon Open Studios. Usually spring has sprung, and you can smell the freshly thawed ground and greening grass as you walk, drive or hop around to different artist studios. This year, the big weekend is Friday to Sunday, May 17 to 19, 2019, and A Little Beacon Blog is a proud sponsor.

Open Studios was the first event that locked in my love for Beacon when I accidentally discovered the studios while out jogging one day. An artist had opened their studio (their garage), had the red balloon tied to their mailbox (the official sign that they are inviting you in) and visitors were encouraged to walk up the driveway to explore inside and meet the artist.

Register! Artists Participate

Artists of all kinds are invited to participate. If you’re in Beacon, and if you are an artist - no matter what your age, tools, art supplies, etc. - you are encouraged to register and help people get to know your art. I’m partial to jewelry designers’ studios because I like looking at their work tables. What kind of art do you make? Pottery? Sculptures? Ephemera? Let’s get you on the map and in the brochure. Register here to participate in Beacon Open Studios 2019.

Sponsor! Help Make It Happen

Artists are often withdrawn with their art - or they are just hard to find. Beacon Open Studios is the initiative that make them approachable by everyone. You never know what kind of inspiration may hit you or your children or friends while visiting one of these studios. This is why A Little Beacon Blog sponsors Beacon Open Studios. It keeps the community churning and ideas accessible.

Sponsor Beacon Open Studios here. Or, you can simply donate!

And Now, A Sneak Peek…

A bunch of artists have signed up, and you still can. Here are three that we found and intend to explore during the big weekend:

Ómò Oba (Prince) Adetomiwa A. Gbadebo

“Born Ómò Oba (Prince) Adetomiwa A. Gbadebo in Abeokuta, Nigeria; into three royal families: the Gbadebo royal family of Egba Kingdom and the Ademiluyi family of Ilé-Ifè Kingdom, as well as the Oshodi (Tapa) family from Lagos. Òmó Oba (Prince) Gbadebo uses his Yorùbá heritage and life experiences to create his pieces based on emotions and the journey that life stitches; he embodies a spiritual trance while he creates. He does not associate himself with any artistic movement; for it is with the guidance of Olódùmarè that he executes his message.” - from his artist page.

Yali Lewis’ jewelry may look familiar to you because… her flagship shop, Lewis & Pine, is in Beacon at 133 Main Street (near Bank Square)! “Lewis & Pine Jewelry and Apothecary are created by New York-based artist Yali Lewis and are inspired by modernist design and natural beauty. Yali creates her jewelry and apothecary collections by hand in her studio in Beacon, NY. The visual and sensory landscape of the Hudson Valley meet the architectural geometry and cultural richness of New York City in Yali's work. Yali has shown in numerous juried craft fairs around the country. Yali’s work has been at the Bryant Park Holiday Village, Columbus Avenue Craft Fair, Renegade Craft Fair, Urban Craft Uprising, and many others.“ - excerpted from her website.

A Little Beacon Blog Signs On As Sponsor For 2019 Beacon Open Studios

Beacon Open Studios was one of the first annual events I ever encountered in Beacon while out for a jog one day. It embodies one of the things that makes Beacon so easy to love - there is always something going on, and every day offers the chance to stumble across something magical.

That is why we are once again a proud sponsor of this year’s Beacon Open Studios. This is a chance for artists to open their homes or studios to the public, so that the public can see how the art gets made. In the past, this has been garages, sheds, apartments, offices, and other nontraditional venues of viewing art.

Found Some Red Dot Beacon Open Studios and Saw This

While out perusing the studios, we happened to find the original artwork used for the Beacon Open Studios brochure map this year! The artist, RoArt, was showing at Spire Studios, and we featured her last year as well! She works at a foundry, and after finishing some painting work on a sculpture, she laid the paintbrushes down in a circle. She was captivated by the fanned-out arrangement and colors, so she captured the brush scene, then painted them vibrantly.

The tools in the picture are from metalsmith Kit Burke-Smith. She brought her tools down from her upstairs studio to show and tell curious visitors what they do and how they were used to create different pieces of jewelry.

The next house was on Orchard, but we were too late to go inside. Lucky for us, plenty of work was on display in the window! Then we headed over to see Stanley Lindwasser’s house/studio, down Lafayette Avenue opposite Tompkins Terrace, but the sky grew so ominous that we vowed to return tomorrow.

Where did you hop?

Part of the thrill of experiencing Beacon Open Studios is finding each studio somewhere in Beacon. Similar to how we hunt for Christmas lights at night, we drive or jog around town looking for the red dot in yards and sidewalks, signaling that there is an artist inside waiting to show you their actual studio and finished (or unfinished) art. Step inside to see the studio in this picture, and you'll discover the metalsmith Kit Burke-Smith at 5 Orchard Place.

You can pick up an actual map in different shops around town, or here at our office at A Little Beacon Blog. Once again, we are a proud sponsor of this event, as it’s one of our favorites of the indoor/outdoor events that define Beacon. Or you can get the map on your phone, by going to the Beacon Open Studios website, for a really slick experience to help you hit the artists' studios you want.

Ambling is encouraged!
