Good news for this hot Friday slip and slide into the weekend! Columbia University has dropped trespassing charges against several protesters who took over a building on campus to rename it Hind's Hall. Hind was the little Palestinian girl who was trapped in her family's car after Israeli IDF killed everyone in it, as well as the Red Crescent EMS workers who tried to save her. The news was begrudgingly shared by past Dutchess County Executive, Marcus Molinaro, who was quite bummed about the trespassing charges on Columbia students being dismissed. Marcus is one of several New York Congresspeople who have accepted money from Israel's lobby in the United States, AIPEC, as reported for ALBB by Arvind Dilawar months ago. Happy Pride!! Today in Beacon is the Queer Liberation March. Details below! Last Sunday was a pleasant day in the Hudson Valley. Plenty of people enjoyed it outside for Memorial Day. Splash Down opened, and all felt right. Upon returning from the Lazy River, ALBB read, watched, absorbed the news that Rafah (the Israeli designated "safe zone" in Palestine that 1.5 million people were seeking refuge in (BBC) and lived in tents) was burning. Children's heads were decapitated. Palestinian people pulled charred bodies to dignity of any sort. We posted some of the photos on the blog. Then ALBB had a talk with their 6 year old, where they both decided there were 2 Americas. Many people around the world were so shocked. The Internet broke. Some people shut down. Other people rose up. For the first time, many people posted their dissent with the genocide on Gaza by Israel, which you can learn more about on Tin Shingle's blog. Here at ALBB, we narrowed our focus. We no longer grappled with the pendulum swing of feeling badly about incorporating Palestine into Beacon content. We went all out sharing more information from world leaders and thoughts from regular people in order to help stop this mass homicide and end this occupation. Most of what we have been posting at Instagram will be published onto the blog as well. Over at Instagram, ALBB declared that the best way to see lots of Beacon joy, you would be seeing it from our advertisers!! Because those are the only posts guaranteed to publish. Good News! A revival has happened after seeing the screening of "The Peekskill Riots" from filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett last evening at the Howland Public Library. This hidden Hudson Valley history is a must-see, and we recommend you spend an hour tonight or this weekend watching the first episode, which is 1 hour long. Here's what it's all about. ALBB will be at the screening of the 2nd episode, happening possibly at the Peekskill Library on June 8th, and we will be recording a podcast with the filmmaker to learn about his experience making this film, which included getting blocked to even find out more information about the event: "On August 27 and September 4th, 1949, violence broke out at two concerts held outside Peekskill, NY, headlined by Black singer, actor, and activist Paul Robeson. Citizens of Peekskill, galvanized by racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and disdain for Robeson’s left-wing views and campaign for civil rights, started two riots that resulted in hundreds of injuries, made national news, and unofficially marked the beginning of the McCarthy era, which would nearly erase Robeson from the public consciousness." The Movie :: Retail Therapy Guide and Things To Do In Beacon 5/17/2024

The movie “There She Goes,” starring Rachael Leigh Cook (“She’s All That”) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Pitch Perfect” and "Ghosts") filmed in Beacon on Thursday, and it caused excitement and a stir. Main Street was closed between Wolcott (Bank Square Coffee) and Cross Street (Luxe Optique). While an "intermittent closure" was announced by the City of Beacon via their website one day before, and the production company gave letters about sidewalk disruptions to local businesses, the closure of daytime walking and browsing, not to mention driving, was a surprise to some business owners. Several stores did not see foot traffic as they usually do for a Thursday. A collection of people watching the filming. A Little Beacon Blog got a front row seat from inside Notions-N-Potions. We got to see the anticipated "throw the ice-cubes" scene, which included a surprise and unscripted duck into the witchy shop, much to our chagrin. Get the popcorn. Special Screening of "The Peekskill Riots" Episode One: The Mighty Oak in the Forest” and Q&A with local Filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett**

The Howland Public Library is pleased to announce a special screening on Thursday, May 23rd at 6 PM of Episode One of the docu-series "The Peekskill Riots," followed by a Q&A session with Hudson Valley filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett.

The docu-series will shed light on the historic events of August and September 1949, when violence erupted at benefit concerts for the Civil Right Congress outside Peekskill, NY, featuring actor, singer, and activist Paul Robeson. Citizens of Peekskill, galvanized by racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and disdain for Robeson’s left-wing views and campaign for civil rights, started two riots that resulted in hundreds of injuries, made national news, and unofficially marked the beginning of the McCarthy era, which would nearly erase Robeson from the public consciousness.  

Through compelling storytelling and archival footage, Episode One serves as an introduction to Robeson's life and activism and the events leading up to the Peekskill concerts. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Bennett in a thought-provoking Q&A session following the screening.
