It's Earth Day! And such a big weekend in Beacon to celebrate. See below for a list of things to do, with a few Save The Dates in-between for mid-week opportunities. After a long wait, Main Street is getting paved. From the west end of Main Street at 9D, all the way to Herbert Street. It will be smelly. It will be gritty. It will not be at all like fresh flowers in the middle of this spring bloom on Earth Day. But doing it now is so worth it. And with a short-ish milling and paving cycle! Ron's Ice Cream Opens - Here's Your List Of Where To Find Scoops In Beacon - Vegan Too!

The tip came in on the Beacon Moms Facebook Group - Ron’s Ice Cream on Fishkill Avenue announced their opening day - March 25, 2022 - and are open! Readers and little kids alike have been asking: “When’s Ron’s opening!?!” as Beacon’s most visible ice cream hut, painted yellow and located across from a kid-busy Memorial Park, is the mile-marker to the official arrival of Spring.

Despite it being in the 50s today. Totally normal, by the way. Beaonites know that at least one more snow dump on pink and white magnolia blossoms is possible. For the sake of time, we re-published 2021’s Ice Cream Roundup, with the addition of Lick The Vegan’s Stuff’s new location - and is open now!

This picture is credited to another Beacon gem, the vegan donut shop, Peaceful Provisions. Ron’s Ice Cream is located at 298 Fishkill Ave in Beacon, NY and they have all of the fun flavors you want like Birthday Cake or Cookies and Cream. And always sprinkles. Some special flavors include Chocolate Moose Tracks, Graham Central Station, Crazy Vanilla, Cookies n Cream, and many more! They also carry sundaes, specialty sundaes, flurries, milkshakes, slushies, and more. Oh, plus, they have hotdogs, burgers, snacks, sandwiches, and sides!

The parking lot is small for line crowding during a pandemic. Last year, Ron’s initiated a call-in service with no walk-up service. ALBB does not have word yet on how they will do it this year. Stay tuned!

Savings Started :: Retail Therapy Guide 3/4/2022

If you walked past it 20 times, you may not have noticed that the mask covering the face in the mural of the person in the hat on Main Street and N. Chestnut has come down. Do you remember what the mask installation looked like? A piece of the sunflower trimming was spotted near the trash, just like a disposable mask would be. Readers have been sharing their now iconic photos of the masked version, both as selfies and as statement shots. In life and business news, Dutchess County has announced the elimination of sales tax on clothing and footwear priced below $110 effective now. First announced last fall as part of their broader budget, this reward for consumers went into effect March 1, 2022. There is a broader story here. Beacon and other municipalities do not keep their own sales tax. Over the past few decades, Beacon's sales tax has gone to Dutchess County to be collected and used county-wide, with Beacon and other municipalities getting compensated from the county in a fixed rate. In the past two Beacon administrations to sign this deal, Beaconites have never been told the number of sales tax dollars generated from Beacon shops. Former Mayor Randy Casale confirmed that years ago with A Little Beacon Blog. Current Mayor Lee Kyriacou just met with Dutchess County to renegotiate the rate Beacon gets paid by Dutchess County, and did not reveal Beacon's sales tax total during the public City Council Meeting, if he knows it. Both he and Beacon's City Administrator Chris White are the ones who sign the agreement, and the City Council must vote to pass it, which they did. The legislation now moves forward to other government entities who must also sign it. Both Dutchess County and New York State also would not reveal Beacon's total sales tax collected dollars when A Little Beacon Blog researched it years ago. Signs Of Spring :: Retail Therapy Guide 2/22/2022

Welcome to another installment of Friday Snow Day In Beacon! You needed another winter workout, right? Just as the daffodils were beginning to shoot out of the ground, a snow-sleet blanketed them. Dutchess County announced its preparation, and the Beacon City School District closed. Don't think this is it - there were a couple years in a row when snowfall withered the magnolia blossoms. Meanwhile, Beacon's Annual Parade of Green is back on the event schedule! This annual parade marked the first parade that was closed days after the pandemic was being declared (read about that memory lane here). Beacon has not approved any parade in the two years of the pandemic. The first one to launch was the inaugural Beacon Spring Celebration Of Light sidewalk parade last weekend, which was cold and blustery but very warm in spirit and fun. The Beacon Parade of Green is a symbolic come-back. It's here! A Little Beacon Blog's first Gift Guide in quite some time. For Valentine's Day, this one focuses on some shops on Beacon's East End near the mountain. There is some very serious shopping down there, from high end to vintage, to world famous chocolate to marshmallows to even rentable fashion. In other news, Beacon is warming up to events as the indoor mask mandate in business comes down (for now) and the ice melts (before another snowfall?), with the introduction of a new lantern celebration concept is introduced from a group calling themselves the Beacon Spring. It's an organized walk down the sidewalks of Main Street with lanterns and lights to celebrate spring coming. Sadly, a 2 car collision resulted in death on Fishkill Avenue, followed hours later by a drunk driver hitting a parked police officer's car who had his emergency lights on while the earlier accident was being investigated. Snow Scrapers and Other Things :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/28/2022

Beacon! Before you think of not venturing out tomorrow because of the forecasted blizzard, just remember that our retail friends are very good at shoveling out and clearing sidewalks so that you can come. Pro Tip: You may want to walk everywhere because it's easier, so get your snow boots on! Parking will be...why. Just walk! If you can walk. Anyone who has lived at one time in NYC will know that we walk everywhere. Wheelchair riders will need help, so reach out to friends in need. For those Beacon locals who have cars and driveways: a reminder to not park your car on the street. The plow trucks need to barrel through to clear streets. And it's a Beacon rule that when there is more than 2" of snow, you can't park on the street. You can park in the free municipal lots, which do have new signage so that you can find them better. You will need to dig your car out and move your car within a period of time. SNOW SHOVELING TIPS: Don't Put Street Snow On Sidewalk: If your car is parked in the street and you need to dig it out, don't shovel the snow onto the sidewalk. Your neighbor will be clearing the sidewalk. Citations: At a recent City Council Meeting, the current City Administrator told residents to shovel their sidewalks within a time-frame, as the city might be coming out to issue citations. Not clear on who that personnel would be, since they are so busy plowing the streets, inspecting buildings, and doing new speed traffic duty, but he's taking notice. Elderly: Offer to help your elderly neighbors. Even the neighbors who don't seem elderly, but really are 65 and could use your sprightly energy! Cold Weather: If you don't shovel all of the way, the snow might turn to slush and then freeze, like it did for Beacon's first real snowfall for 2022. Then you are stuck with mounds of ice. Retail Therapy Guide 1/7/2022

WooHoo! We typed the New Year of 2022 correctly into the subject line! Hope you had a great week, and that some of you are enjoying this Snow Day, Beacon's first school closure of the year. Last Sunday to start the big week back to school, the district distributed test kits, and on Monday reported on results. On Wednesday, Dutchess County alerted the media about the second limited supply shipment of test kits and masks to municipalities. On Thursday, the City of Beacon distributed their share at the Howland Public Library, which were gone in a few hours. There is discussion of making the next distribution at night for commuters. Giving an extra hug to all of the teachers and to any employees who are out sick with COVID-19 right now. Sending you on-the-mend vibes. Giving an extra squeeze to health care workers who are showing up to provide life-saving services during this pandemic, amid staffing shortages. Thank You. Many in-person events have been switching to virtual this week. Even the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday for upcoming weather (so order your eggs, beef, lamb and chicken now from Farmer Carrie of Eggberts Free Range Farm so she can deliver free to you!). Seems like a great time to snuggle in, order out, and stream Governor Hochul's State of the State to learn about her plan to once again allow Cocktails To Go. This Sunday is the Celebration of Life Ceremony Funeral for "Scout" Rene Vivo, the iconic Beaconite who touched so many lives - even silently and without words - who was stabbed on Christmas Day. His family has been in touch with ALBB to get the invitation to you about his ceremony. They fundraised from the community to pay for his final wishes. Today, there are 5,683 Active COVID-19 Cases in Dutchess County, a slight decrease from the over 6,000 there were earlier this week. There are 225 Active Cases in Beacon, and 702 in East Fishkill.
