Wintery :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/19/2024

The Winter months are always the hardest months for restaurants and shops in Beacon. People are visiting less and staying indoors. Make it a point to order from your favorite restaurant to let them cook for you. Treat January-March as if it's COVID time for these restaurants. That's how badly they need your support. If you ever wonder why the hours or days of the week change frequently at restaurants, it is because when they have extremely slow days, the begin to bleed money, and they close. So...head on out to Main Street to order a dish you haven't tried yet! Or your favorite that you have all the time. WAR ON GAZA UPDATE Yesterday (Thursday) was the first day of South Africa's case against Israel for the crime of genocide on Gaza, at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) the World Court in The Hague. The 5 main acts of genocide that one of the advocates representing South Africa, Adila Hassim, listed are: Mass killings of Palestinians; Bodily and mental harm; Forced displacement and food blockade; Destruction of the healthcare system; and Preventing Palestinian births. The United States and the UK also began bombing Yemen, after the Houthis in Yemen have maintained their maritime boycott of cargo ships passing through their waters. The Houthis declared that they will maintain the boycott until Israel stops bombing Palestine, and they insist on more humanitarian aid to Gazans. The Houthis have killed no one, but the United States killed at least 10 Houthi fighters before unleashing bombs yesterday, and at least 5 Houthi fighters from the bombing, General Yahya Sarea, the spokesperson for Yemen's Houthi armed forces, just confirmed. Since there are so many pro-Palestinian protests and disruptions happening in the Hudson Valley, with many ALBB readers asking where to find them, we started a regular protest schedule below. It's always time to re-read a book by Martin Luther King, Jr. This passage from "Why We Can't Wait" on page 146 talks about genocide and disruption. Buy this book at Binnacle Books in Beacon. "Our nation was born in genocide when it embraced the doctrine that the original American, the Indian, was an inferior race. Even before there were large numbers of Negroes on our shores, the scar of racial hatred had already disfigured colonial society. From the sixteenth century forward, blood flowed into battles over racial supremacy. We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or to feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it. "Our children are still taught to respect the violence which reduced a red-skinned people of an earlier culture into a few fragmented groups herded into impoverished reservations. This is a sharp contrast to many nations south of the border, which assimilated their Indians, respected their culture, and elevated many of them to high position. "It was upon this massive base of racism that the prejudice toward the nonwhite was readily built, and found rapid growth. This long-standing racist ideology has corrupted and diminished our democratic ideals. It is this tangled web of prejudice from which many Americans now seek to liberate themselves, without realizing how deeply it has been woven into their consciousness. "The roots are deep, and this condition in turn influences the character of the Negro Revolution. Our history teaches us that wielding the sword against racial superiority is not effective. The bravery of the Indian, employing spears and arrows against the Winchester and the Colt, had ultimately to eventuate in defeat. On the other hand, history also teaches that submission produces no acceptable result. Nonresistance merely reinforces the myth that one race is inherently inferior to another. Negroes today are neither exercising violence nor accepting domination. The First Week! :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/5/2024

First weekend of the New Year! Happy 2024! With that, the potential first snow storm of the year! Classic arrival after December, kicking off January with snow plowing and salt. Remember to get a car wash afterwards, to wash of that salt from the bottom of your car. When there is more than 2" of snow, cars need to be off the street so that the snowplows from Beacon's Highway Department can come through. Buddy up with your neighbors or park in a free public parking lot. To open up the DMV parking lot for the anticipated cars moving from the street to the parking lot, the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday. The Last Days :: Retail Therapy Guide 12/22/2023

Hello A Little Beacon Blog Family, This year is joyous, but it is very sad. Merry Christmas to those who celebrate. Christmas has been canceled by the churches in Bethlehem (see here from the Washington Post) because 20,000 Palestinians have been murdered by Israel, and over 6,000 more are missing. If Jesus was born right now in a manger, he would most definitely be killed under the rubble of his tent or house being bombed by Zionists from Israel, who are targeting innocents and children. Nowhere in Palestine is safe. If you want to unfollow right now, that's totally alright. It shows your Islamaphobia, Islamaracism, and your deep comfort in your own white supremacy. But before you go, consider listening to Wali Khan, who asks a question of if anyone were to criticize the Pope, would they be considered anti-Catholic, and then fired for their opinion. The answer is: No. The Pope recently called Israeli's killings "terrorism" after Christians were killed point blank. The Pope was quoted in many media outlets, including Vanity Fair, where he said: “I continue to receive very grave and painful news from Gaza,” Francis said. “Unarmed civilians are the objects of bombings and shootings. And this happened even inside the Holy Family parish complex, where there are no terrorists, but families, children, people who are sick or disabled, nuns...Some are saying, ‘This is terrorism and war,’” the Pope said. “Yes, it is war. It is terrorism.” Those of you who are still here, we know your solidarity with human hearts. That more than one person or group of people can experience a genocide. That vengeance for one genocide does not need to happen upon a people for 75 years of occupation, and for this year, be the most gruesome the world has seen in such a short period of time. It's December :: Retail Therapy Guide 12/1/2023

Hello, December! Yes. It is December. The month of darkness and candles and good thoughts and giving. Maybe snow. White snow. Against a gray sky. Before we get into this weekend edition, there's something you need to know. Over at our Instagram, A Little Beacon Blog has come out swinging in defense of Palestinian lives. More of this will reach this newsletter. But we wanted to let you know. You can unsubscribe now if you want. Some of you already have when we simply linked to where you could buy a keffiyah. Or the interview with local business owner Kamel Jamal who is Palestinian. Some of you found the link so offensive after Oct 7, that you unsubscribed. One of you wrote in to demand ALBB apologize to all of Beacon for linking to that podcast. Well. A lot has happened since then. ALBB loves giving you Retail Therapy on Fridays, and the regular news during the week when we can. But we cannot do it in good conscience when there is an extinction of people going on, that our United States of America is funding.   Since we have been sharing at Instagram, a lot of discoveries have been made. And even in some unsubscribes of this newsletter. So we are going to set a few things straight, as we proceed down this road of Palestine coverage. We will address some of the comments we have gotten. Largely, the support has been a swell of warmth. It's of course the negative comments that weigh heavy. Here's what some people have said: "I come to ALBB to escape reality." ALBB Response: That's nice. We truly are glad we can provide this pleasure! That the businesses we feature can provide for you. However, ALBB was never, not once, created for anyone to escape reality. We are consumed with the craving for "What's going on?" We try to answer that. Takes us a while sometimes. But we get there. "What happened to this accont? You are antisemtic." ALBB Response: To speak in support of Palestinian people, who have been occupied for 75 years, is not antisemtic. Anything we say after this sentence will be viewed harshly, so we will leave it at that. "I come here for coffee recommendations. Focus on Beacon. Stop posting about Palestine." ALBB Response: You will get no such coffee recommendation anymore, until after we update you on the merciless bombing of children, women, men, families, cats, zoo animals, etc. This comment about killed it for us. Wanted to unpublish everything at ALBB after this comment. We already deal with the guilt that comes with the gentrification issue. That ALBB contributes to the glorification of Beacon, driving up rent prices because of our coverage of great businesses, and great community attributes. No one says anything to us about this. But we know it. The support of our Palestinian coverage has been good. But the reverse has been eye-opening. It has been mean. It has been relentless. It has been reality-altering. It has felt like someone is taking our two arms, and stuffing them securely against our body, and stuffing us back inside of a box. To perform. As instructed. "You should be providing content as advertised." ALBB Response: "As advertised..." What does that mean? Who pays us? Do all of these anti-commenters pay us, and are our bosses? That we are misbehaving for them? This was a dumbfounding comment. Thankfully, after today's posts on the resuming of bombing, with the deaths of more Palestinian babies, children stranded in non-functioning hospitals, and the separation of romance, we have not heard much from the relentless commenters. We declared some ground rules, and that seems to have sat them down. For now. We took the hit on breaking the Dummy Light re-painting the street story. We teased it out in our Instagram, but didn't have time to complete the full article. Hopefully you'll still read it when we get to publish it. Alright. Now that we're all caught up.
