Things To Do In Beacon | Retail Therapy Guide 1/13/2023

For this Friday the 13th, we're bringing it back to the message that the local spiritual healer Raven and the Wolf encouraged to her readers some time ago. She circulated the history that Friday the 13th was to celebrate the female energy. You can read more about how other healers educated about it here at Vice: “Before patriarchal times, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. It was considered a day to worship the Divine Feminine that lives in us all and to honor the cycles of creation and death and rebirth.” A female typically has 13 cycles per year. In case you were having a slumping Friday, fast forward you energy to Monday, which is Martin Luther King Day, and for Beaconites, this means you have the opportunity to celebrate it with the Southern Dutchess Coalition at the Springfield Baptist Church. The 1-block radius parade is scheduled to kick off in the morning, followed by a day of programming. And finally, to warm up your gray day, do stop into the Hudson Valley Food Hall because there are a lot of options for you to warm your soul, like Miz Hattie's irreplaceable Mac 'n' Cheese served in a pan, and the Quesadilla at Dulce Cielo MX, who just got her new hand-painted sign from Katie James, Inc.!                                   THE EVENTS + RETAIL THERAPY GUIDE Book an Event Promotion Advertising spot here. Happy Hanukkah to those who have been observing this week. The festival of lights does warm everyone's hearts. Some of you may be traveling or winding down a busy week of last minute work deadlines and shopping deadlines. Give yourself some space to just be, and enjoy moments of silence.  ALBB is traveling on holiday, and left early while the sun was shining before the weather started. We're in the Midwest, and today is icy all around, covered by snowfall, and is -2. Won't be going anywhere for a while. Thank goodness for leftovers! And power. And water. And hot water. HOLIDAY SHOPPING TIP Last minute shopping doesn't have to be stressful! Especially when you're in Beacon - Beacon is filled with the best shops ever - which are open! If the word “power” intimidates or confuses you, switch that word with “ability to go home in your soul that you had the entire time but didn’t realize.” And before you dismiss this as “that can never happen for me - I am cursed - nothing works out for me,” just give this read a chance and realize that indeed things may be stacked against you, and if they are, you need to be extra lithe at navigating to find or create your way. Less Than A Week Away From Thanksgiving! Whaaat?! | Retail Therapy Guide 11/18/2022

How did Thanksgiving become less than a week away?! A big, yet much missed rush of Holiday busy-ness is about to happen. But before we descend into the holiday happiness that is December (it's OK to not be happy and to be filled with mixed up feelings...we just like alliteration), here is a slowed down Thanksgiving message from ALBB: Time is just flying but we hope you can take some time this week to think about gratitude and what it means to you. It's easy to go through the motions and get caught up in our life of routines. Our goal for you this week (and maybe every week) is to slow down, write something down (or to someone) for what you're grateful for, and to simply take some deep breaths. Focus on what makes you feel alive. Discover awareness and intention. Faking like you've had coffee: put a little cream blush UNDER your foundation or tinted moisturizer, and you get that "lit from within vibe" Eyeshadow: this is pretty self-explanatory Point being, give blush a hand (And check out some great shades of powder and cream blush to add to your bag. Cheers To The Weekend! And Chillier Mornings And Second Saturday!

Second Saturday is here! The art galleries are changing, like the leaves on the trees soon will be! Small and large, galleries are located up and down Main Street, and sometimes in houses. Do visit BAU and Maria Lago galleries on the east end of town, as the sculptures and paintings in their windows have been transforming. Use A Little Beacon Blog’s exclusive Art Gallery Guide to plot out your art hop, and report back to us in Instagram by tagging us with your photos of what you find (and maybe buy!) In the mean time, we're holding on to summer a little longer with Summer Love soap from Salleyander - an essential! Make with olive oil, rose, vetiver, and jasmine essential oils. Picked up this one (and a eucalyptus for next time) at the Beacon Farmers Market last weekend! Summer Love is limited edition... head there this weekend to see if it's still available! Fingers crossed because it's so good! And if it is available, snag 3 for only $25 because you'll want this even in the colder months, Also snagged some bone-in pork chops from Eggberts but can't attach a photo because we ate them too quickly!  Anyway... we hope you made it through your first week of September (and maybe back to school) with nothing but good vibes. We don't know about you but we are digging the chilly early mornings! They're perfect for light layers, strolls down main street, picking up a coffee from Beacon Bread Company, and not feeling so sweaty as soon as you wake up! We're here for it, September! Keep it comin'.  Also... school buses are out! Don't give them a hard time - especially if you're stuck behind them. They are literally doing their job! Getting kids to school safely!                           THE EVENTS + RETAIL THERAPY GUIDE Book an Event Promotion Advertising spot here. And yet that mind is full of its own fierce and funny voice, its own preoccupations and strangenesses. ‘It matters to me,’ writes Abu Al-Hayyat, ‘what you’re thinking now / as you coerce your kids to sleep / in the middle of shelling’: whether it’s coming up with ‘plans / to solve the world’s problems,’ plans that ‘eliminate longing from stories, remove exhaustion from groans,’ or dreaming ‘of a war / that’s got no war in it,’ or proclaiming that ‘I don’t believe in survival.’ In ‘You Can Be the Last Leaf’, Abu Al-Hayyat has created a richly textured portrait of Palestinian interiority—at once wry and romantic, worried and tenacious, and always singing itself.” Binnacle is *Open daily! A Little Beacon Blog has all of the Guides you need: Shopping, Restaurants, Beauty (there are at least 3 places in Beacon to get facials and even makeup), Classes (Fall is coming).  Before we get to the weekend, we want to give Richie Kaplan of Max's on Main a special shout-out here. He has been encouraging Katie of ALBB every day to produce this blog, and especially now that she's helping with the Spirit of Beacon Day. Each day, he's been asking: "How many volunteers do you have?! It's only 2 months away! Have you announced?!" Fueled by his intensity (people need people) She couldn't walk by his restaurant anymore until the last newsletter was sent. Exhale :) Thank You Richie xo You need to know where to tell all your friends where to eat, drink and shop. Don't deny yourselves the shopping, dear friends. There are plenty of boutiques in Beacon that have really special things that you didn't know you needed all your life. And if we hear one peep about any place being too pricey, then we hear you also complain about Amazon and Target, and we ask you to be honest with yourself, and just let go and enjoy all that Beacon has to offer you. Full of complexities — multitudes if you will — and endlessly amazed by the generosity of the narratives these books contain. John Berger said a story is a shelter from oblivion and we don’t know if it’s true but it’s hard not to think of it that way, hard not to see stories as offering something frankly existential. Narratives offer something which seems to surround us and goad us forward, something that is much more than a way to pass the time (but which is also that). We can’t help but to feel that reading a book is to connect not only with the writer but also with everyone who has ever read that book. It’s something to recount, to argue about, a thread through our dreams and out waking. Text is physical but it becomes thought, dreams, songs, prayers; a book becomes the community you carry it to, relaying, transforming." Stop into Binnacle this weekend or upcoming week!
