SUNY Schools BDS Globalize the Intifada: International Solidarity Panel, July 19

This Friday, on July 19th at 11am est, SUNY BDS will be hosting an international panel with participants around the globe to discuss the student movement in support of Palestine. Since the beginning of israel’s genocide, we have seen that complicit rulers and capitalists stand on the side of israel while peoples of the world and students continue to stand up for Palestine. It is time we bring together all our movements for a stronger and more coherent resistance against Zionism and imperialism internationally!

Following the massacres committed by the Zionist entity upon innocent men, women, and children, students across the world have joined forces to take an unconditional stance in solidarity with Palestine. The unconscionable human rights violations committed with our taxpayer money– with our complicity –demands that we fight and do our part for the Palestinian liberation movement.

Just as SUNY BDS strives to bring together the 64 SUNY schools in New York state, we are hosting this panel to bring this effort to a global audience. We witnessed in the past 9 months how student organizers become more empowered and successful when allowed to organize in spheres with like-minded comrades. This panel will be a first step to truly Globalizing the Intifada.

Our panel will include students who organize and fight for Palestine on 4 continents:

Students will be sharing their experiences from their respective countries, discuss the state of the Palestine solidarity movement across the world, and think about ways to develop our coordination as the struggle continues. We invite everyone to join the conversation in a spirit of international solidarity that we will advance going forward!

Things To Do In Beacon Guides 6/21/2024

Good news for this hot Friday slip and slide into the weekend! Columbia University has dropped trespassing charges against several protesters who took over a building on campus to rename it Hind's Hall. Hind was the little Palestinian girl who was trapped in her family's car after Israeli IDF killed everyone in it, as well as the Red Crescent EMS workers who tried to save her. The news was begrudgingly shared by past Dutchess County Executive, Marcus Molinaro, who was quite bummed about the trespassing charges on Columbia students being dismissed. Marcus is one of several New York Congresspeople who have accepted money from Israel's lobby in the United States, AIPEC, as reported for ALBB by Arvind Dilawar months ago. Happy Pride!! Today in Beacon is the Queer Liberation March. Details below! Last Sunday was a pleasant day in the Hudson Valley. Plenty of people enjoyed it outside for Memorial Day. Splash Down opened, and all felt right. Upon returning from the Lazy River, ALBB read, watched, absorbed the news that Rafah (the Israeli designated "safe zone" in Palestine that 1.5 million people were seeking refuge in (BBC) and lived in tents) was burning. Children's heads were decapitated. Palestinian people pulled charred bodies to dignity of any sort. We posted some of the photos on the blog. Then ALBB had a talk with their 6 year old, where they both decided there were 2 Americas. Many people around the world were so shocked. The Internet broke. Some people shut down. Other people rose up. For the first time, many people posted their dissent with the genocide on Gaza by Israel, which you can learn more about on Tin Shingle's blog. Here at ALBB, we narrowed our focus. We no longer grappled with the pendulum swing of feeling badly about incorporating Palestine into Beacon content. We went all out sharing more information from world leaders and thoughts from regular people in order to help stop this mass homicide and end this occupation. Most of what we have been posting at Instagram will be published onto the blog as well. Over at Instagram, ALBB declared that the best way to see lots of Beacon joy, you would be seeing it from our advertisers!! Because those are the only posts guaranteed to publish. Sponsored posts also serve as a much needed break and breather for those of us following and resisting the genocide and occupation. Screen This Film Tonight! :: Retail Therapy Guide 5/24/2024

Good News! A revival has happened after seeing the screening of "The Peekskill Riots" from filmmaker Jon Scott Bennett last evening at the Howland Public Library. This hidden Hudson Valley history is a must-see, and we recommend you spend an hour tonight or this weekend watching the first episode, which is 1 hour long. Here's what it's all about. ALBB will be at the screening of the 2nd episode, happening possibly at the Peekskill Library on June 8th, and we will be recording a podcast with the filmmaker to learn about his experience making this film, which included getting blocked to even find out more information about the event: "On August 27 and September 4th, 1949, violence broke out at two concerts held outside Peekskill, NY, headlined by Black singer, actor, and activist Paul Robeson. Citizens of Peekskill, galvanized by racist and anti-Semitic sentiments and disdain for Robeson’s left-wing views and campaign for civil rights, started two riots that resulted in hundreds of injuries, made national news, and unofficially marked the beginning of the McCarthy era, which would nearly erase Robeson from the public consciousness." The Movie :: Retail Therapy Guide and Things To Do In Beacon 5/17/2024

The movie “There She Goes,” starring Rachael Leigh Cook (“She’s All That”) and Utkarsh Ambudkar (“Pitch Perfect” and "Ghosts") filmed in Beacon on Thursday, and it caused excitement and a stir. Main Street was closed between Wolcott (Bank Square Coffee) and Cross Street (Luxe Optique). While an "intermittent closure" was announced by the City of Beacon via their website one day before, and the production company gave letters about sidewalk disruptions to local businesses, the closure of daytime walking and browsing, not to mention driving, was a surprise to some business owners. Several stores did not see foot traffic as they usually do for a Thursday. A collection of people watching the filming. A Little Beacon Blog got a front row seat from inside Notions-N-Potions. We got to see the anticipated "throw the ice-cubes" scene, which included a surprise and unscripted duck into the witchy shop, much to our chagrin. Get the popcorn. May! So Many Registrations... :: Retail Therapy 4/3/2024

It's May! Breakneck Point Race is this Sunday...details below. It's May! The Cold Spring Farmers' Market begins Summer Hours, opening earlier at 8:30am, still closing at 1pm, as first reported by Eggbert's Free Range Farm. It's May! Carter's has opened their grand windows and patio, and are open 7 days! It's May! The Beacon High School Career Fair is this month, and Guidance Counselor Michele Polhamus extended the registration deadline a few more days for you if you want to register your business, organization or person to show students what they can become. She also released the lineup so far to ALBB - see who is participating this year! It's May! Beacon Hoops opened registration! TBH, it was a tough week. We want to acknowledge that before we get to all of the good news. Pro-Palestinian Encampments popped up at universities all over the country, but Columbia's violent take-down by NYPD, as ordered by NYC's Mayor and Columbia University's President, was disturbing. Beacon/Newburgh local and photojournalist Alexa B. Wilkinson has photos. The student protest this week at Columbia involved an occupation of Hamilton Hall, which is what also happened back in 1968. This was near the anniversary of that time. Columbia students were protesting against the Vietnam War, Columbia's association with weapon manufacturing industry, and against Columbia University's planned build of a gym in Harlem, the preparations of which had evicted many African Americans as a real estate expansion. The majority of ALBB readers appreciate this global coverage we have been providing, as traditional media has been telling a different tale, one that paints the protesters as violent. Countless videos like this one from Israelism Film have been showing Zionist Pro-Israeli people using bats, gates, fists, and fireworks against the Pro-Palestinian students. Some voluntarily walk into encampments and call the police, saying they feel scared. Before you say: "What a waste of time," as you wonder how this relates to Beacon, please know that sentiment is extremely racist. Many, many residents of Beacon, both Jewish, Muslim, Arab Christian and Palestinian, are deeply connected to this, both with personal loss of family members and being part of the diaspora. More than one local Beacon person has said: "I just don't want it coming here." That statement is also racist. Since "coming here" isn't a thing. Defining "it" is problematic and dehumanizing. People with histories are already here. And, American's tax dollars are already funding it - to the billions. And the money just keeps flowing. And we don't have free health care. This week, encampments were erected at SUNY New Paltz and at Vassar. Last night, the administration at SUNY New Paltz ordered riot police to violently take down the encampment and arrest more than 140 people and throw away personal belongings including wallets, according to people who where there. The Administration told the students this in the afternoon, giving them a 7pm deadline. The police were not called in as a response to any activity, other than sitting and chanting. It Was A Week. Eclipses. Earthquake. :: Retail Therapy Guide 4/13/2024

What a Big. Week. We are coming out of! From the earthquake last Friday, to the eclipse on Monday (wrote a poem about it - we were in OH for 100% Totality), to the anonymous letter sender who wants ALBB to stop blogging about Palestine so sent maybe 20 anonymous letters to businesses about their opinion. How are you doing? More on that Letter Writing Campaign later in another newsletter. There's been a lot going on here at ALBB. Turns out, when you lose a bunch of genocide supporters on Instagram, and you have a letter campaign written about you, you become very attractive to other local media wanting to cover your work that is positively making a difference for people (photo shoot is scheduled for this weekend for one magazine) and a mysteriously retracted (aka deleted) article about it occurred at another newspaper (more details to come!). Tiss Tiss. Then, the respected journalist and storyteller, Ahmed Eldin followed ALBB for our Palestinian coverage, because he too has been committed to liberation coverage, and he too stopped posting his brunch photos until liberation comes (his followers were upset...they too demanded Brunch Photos but are supporting his message).
