Beacon Open Studios Is Back! This Weekend! July 22-24th - Events All Weekend

If you're new to town, you may not have experienced Beacon Open Studios, an always evolving interactive art experience that happens once a year. It is the one time that you get to wander around Beacon to find yourself inside of an artist's studio. You get to see their tools, smell their mixtures, and maybe see some artists in action.

Beacon Open Studios took quite a blow during the shutdown of the pandemic. As with all things wonderful in Beacon, this is a volunteer effort, where leadership can change from time to time. New energy came in this year to produce this event for you, led by artist  Darya Golubina.

Her preferred medium is oil paint or graphite but some of you may know her as “the hand," handling tiny little masterpieces in the photos she takes for Beacon’s Tiniest Gallery. The miniature gallery is a project she helped start with her friends when the isolation of the pandemic took over and they craved connection to their community. When she’s not painting or documenting the gallery’s newest acquisition, she photographs life-size humans at a studio she manages in NYC. Born in the Ukraine; raised in Brooklyn; graduated from SVA. Darya says Beacon, "feels like home."

Bringing back Beacon Open Studios certainly helps Beacon feel like home to all who live here.

HOW TO EXPERIENCE BEACON OPEN STUDIOS
From July 22, 2022 - July 24, 2022, you can join Beacon Open Studios for an exciting self-guided tour of Beacon’s artists studios. Including 60+ artists, multiple group shows and their music artists showcase.

7.23 - 7.24 - Artist Open Studios (see here for locations) from 12-6pm. Go visit over 60 artists.

7.22 - Opening Reception at The Landmark from 6-9pm

7.23 Music Artist Showcase at Reserva Wine Bar from 4-7pm

Kids Classes Guide Updated - Tons Of Opportunities For Summer Classes And Activities

Sunny With A Chance Of... :: Retail Therapy 6/24/2022

Today was looking like a great sunny break from the cold fall days we have been having here in Beacon, and then the Supreme Court had to go an make their decision. Oh wait - which one? The one stripping away women's rights to their bodies? Or the one making it easier to carry a concealed weapon in New York? In better news, registration for the Beacon Pool is open. The City of Beacon announced that they are indeed having fireworks on July 3rd in Memorial Park "at dark." Parking is limited and people are encouraged to walk or roll. The message from Beacon's Recreation Department encourages people to call the Mayor's Office if they would like to make a donation. Historically, individual and outside volunteer groups ran Beacon's fireworks. It was not run by the City. In those times, donations were encouraged and accepted by those volunteer groups to their non-profit entities. This is a notable time in this moment where the City itself is asking for donations. And as a reminder, when Independence Day on July 4th was declared, the Constitution was not written in a way that recognized BIOPIC (Black and Indigenous People Of Color) or White women. Juneteenth!! :: Retail Therapy Guide 6/17/2022

It's Juneteenth on Sunday! Let us remember that this holiday of independence for African Americans living in the USA is a holiday of delay of freedom and decency - delay that processes can create, and that laws can create in plain sight to make people not matter. Juneteenth has been celebrated by the Black community since 2 years after the Civil War ended and the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, abolishing slavery. Enslaved people in Texas were never told about President Abraham Lincoln's executive order declaring enslaved people to be free. Two years later, a Union soldier rode into town to deliver the news. The response from the African American community was jubilation and celebration with music, food and community. Juneteenth is also known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Black Independence Day, and Juneteenth Independence Day, according to Britannica. Despite these words of freedom, the Black community would be kept down by Jim Crow Laws, making it nearly impossible for them to vote, own property, and other basic functions of living in the United States of America. For the first time since 1865 - that's 157 years later - the holiday became a national (paid in some cases) holiday, made possible by President Joe Biden. One hundred and fifty seven years is a lot of delay! Especially evident as many in the white community only learned about Juneteenth in 2020 during the first months of racial re-awakening in our time. Thanks to notifications in the Beacon Free Press and a great roundup at the Chronogram, we are able to share several Juneteenth events that you can participate in. For staying in place, the Highlands Current has been printing a great series on Black history in the Hudson Valley. Do give it a read and a listen to their podcast. The stories told by elders in the Black community here tell of experiences and an at times continued way of life that is not acceptable and rooted in strange comfort. Also a great listen is the reading of essays from the students for the 2022 Martin Luther King Essay Contest at Beacon's City Council Workshop Meeting this week. The ceremony, usually held in February, had been delayed numerous times. Former Councilmember Ali Muhammad suggested hosting it during a Community Segment of the public meeting, so that you can have a chance to hear the kids read their essays on video. Give a listen (it's in the beginning). PS: Speaking of the other Independence Day on July 4th, the Mayor announced during that meeting that July 4th event details if any were supposed to come down that night, but perhaps will come next week. PPS: The Saugerties Town Board voted to cancel a scheduled gun show that was to be held at the Kiwanis Ice Arena, an event organized by David and Cathy Petronis, as reported in the Times Herald-Record. The Saugerties Police Chief Joseph Sinagra released a statement with comments from Petronis and Town Supervisor Fred Costello Jr. citing "recent mass shootings around the country" as the reason for the discomfort. David Patronis was in favor of continuing the show, and lamented the loss of revenue for small business, but it seemed many in the community and law enforcement did not want the event. Welcome back to the weekend Beacon! Despite the bright orange signs, you are free to park on Main Street this weekend in between the milling phase, and the paving phase. Though watch out for the road, as it is all scratched up and has exposed personhole covers from the milling. Bad for tires. But DO go into shops! They need you, as shopping has been low during this week, say some shop owners, as drivers avoided Main Street. All in all, the enormous project has been going well. Though Beacon's historic Dummy Light was hit and knocked to the ground by a City vehicle. Many Beaconites were not happy about it. The light is in the process of being restored by the City, but people kept their feelings about it. Read all about it here. For those sports fans of little kid teams, now is your chance to really jump in by volunteering to help out as a coach on the Beacon Junior Baseball team. This co-ed league saw a surge in signups from t-ball to regular ball, and is looking for extra help for their 11 and 12 age-group teams. You don't need to know how to play baseball to participate! That's the fun of it. Sometimes just you being there in the field helps the practice move along. You will be supported by Beacon Junior Baseball leaders who will guide you in what to do.
