Happening This Weekend - 3/22/2019

Events for Beacon Public Schools are popping up now that Spring has sprung! A Little Beacon Blog created a Guide to capture these, and submitting information for it is free for organizers of these events. You'll learn about South Avenue's Color-A-Thon on April 6, which is their biggest annual fundraising drive and is open to all to participate. South Avenue kids have only a few days left for online fundraising, and kids from any school can register to get blasted with color while they run around the block.

You'll also learn about a recycling opportunity for your dead markers! Yup - South Avenue has a giant marker collection box year-round to give the markers a second life.

Happening This Weekend - 3/15/2019

It's... a really spring-like day! Not wanting to jinx anything, we'll take this nice weather. Which brings us to this exciting announcement before you get your weekend on: A Little Beacon Blog's Summer Camp Guide is in full swing! And updates continue to be made as details for camps emerge!

One of our most relied upon Guides for parents in Beacon and beyond is our Summer Camp Guide. It is the most inclusive Guide in the Hudson Valley, as it is free for most camps to list, thereby giving parents plenty of unfiltered options when it comes to researching the best fits of fun, entertainment, and learning for their family's schedule.

SPONSORSHIPS NOW OPEN
Camps who want to stand out in the list can buy an Advertiser Camp Kit and get their logo listed, a photo gallery, video if they have it, and possibly an Instagram share (starts at $450 for seasonal placement in this Guide).

Businesses who want to be a Community Sponsor can do so as well. This is a great fit for doctors, urgent care centers, professional organizers, and others who want to show their support to parents (starts at $250 for seasonal placement in this Guide).

These are early bird rates as we introduce this first phase of advertising on this Guide.

Busy weekend this weekend! Saturday is double-booked with the highly anticipated Parade of Green, followed by the all-day openings of different exhibits in Beacon's Art Galleries for Second Saturday. SECOND SATURDAY ART GUIDE
Guide Sponsored By: No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
Guide Written By: Catherine Sweet
"Working OverTime"
No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
469 Main Street, Beacon, NY
"Working OverTime," works on paper by Clarence Morgan and David Rich, opens at No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works. The exhibit asks: "What does it mean to make a painting over time? What does devotion to one’s practice extended over a lifetime entail? To painters Clarence Morgan and David Rich, each in their sixth decade, time has become compressed, with a degree of urgency about its limitations and passage."

Day:
Saturday, March 9, 2019
Time: 6:45 to 10 pm
Location: First Presbyterian Church, McKinley Hall, 50 Liberty St., Beacon, NY
Dmitri Kasterine began taking pictures in Newburgh in 1996. It wasn’t the city’s reputation that drew him, but its beauty. His documentary, shot in 2015, consists of a collection of interviews together with glimpses of life and houses in ruins. Incorporating his original portraits and a commentary of what drew him to Newburgh, the film gives voice to those who live perilously, often in uninhabitable houses, in a city where education has faltered and employment is scarce. We hear what is actually happening to the fabric and people of Newburgh as they face another crisis: a determined program of gentrification.

Book Club: Wednesday, March 13 | 7 pm
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of "The Daily Show" began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother - his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.
Discuss at Dennings Point Distillery on Wednesday Book Club.

2019 Parade of Green Grand Marshal Fred Antalek Shares His Fondest Beacon Memory - "Rowing Behind Rite Aid"
Born in 1937, Fred Antalek has been in Beacon with his business for a long time. We asked his daughter Susan for his fondest memory of Beacon. "When Fred was 10 years old, he used to row around in a boat on the street behind Rite Aid. This area was always flooded.” This prompted a look back on the blog as to why, which also gave us a glimpse into to the old department store, Schoonmaker's.

HEADLINE NEWS FROM OUR SPONSORS

It's Responsible Pet Owners Month!
Insuring the health and wellness of your furry friend is important. When it comes to insurance, we often think of our own health, life, home or auto insurance policies. We take extra care to make sure our beloved family members and most valued possessions are covered in the event of an illness, accident or loss. But what about our pets? Pet insurance pays for veterinary treatment of your ill or injured pet. Some policies may pay out if your pet gets into trouble.

Happening This Weekend - 2/22/2019

Happy Weekend Everyone! It's only February, but winter has felt rough - and it's been one heck of a week of snow days. But good things are happening: Summer Snowflakes, aka "snowdrops" as well as lilacs have breached the ground in Beacon. Here's a shout-out to the easy alert systems sent by the City of Beacon and the school district, and your easy access to some of the best and cutest winter boots (Mountain Tops), salt and shovels (Brett's Hardware), and chocolate (Chocolate Shop, Alps, any grocery store in town). Consider this our effort to mentally prepare you for the blizzard that usually happens in April! :) Remember that time there was a State Of Emergency declared after the blizzard in March and the National Guard came?

And now, onto this week's Things To Do!
Sponsored by Antalek & Moore for car insurance.

Local boutique La Mère has been very successful with reaching out into the community to get to know the ladies and their men, and create a loyal relationship with customers. One of the most unexpected bits of feedback from customers, when told, "You could also find it online," is their response: "But I want to support YOU and buy it here in the store!" Which is awesome! What we're discovering is, people don't realize that the shop also has its own website where you can instantly buy something you love - even in the middle of the night after you see one of April's outfit mashup videos!

It is such a pleasure to announce the new website design for L a M è r e Clothing + Goods! Working with storefront owners to grow their opportunities online is our passion. This website uses Shopify under the hood and at the counter as well, and the design was art-directed by the store owner herself, April Perri, a former big-time fashion designer in the big label world. April can now add new inventory to her shop via the Shopify app as she unpacks it from boxes. We try to tailor the management experience of a website for each business owner, tapping into their strengths. For April, she's always working from her phone, so we trained her in updating her website from the app. If you have a project that needs some work, reach out and contact us.

Happening This Weekend - 2/8/2019

Alright people... if you've been smelling freshly buttered popcorn from down near the Beacon Theater, that is because these masterminds are about to make a big announcement about... what seems to be... the opening of Story Screen, the pop-up indie movie theater that is finding a permanent home in the Beacon Theater on the east end of town, toward the mountain. With legit stadium-style plush seating. Look for the announcement at A Little Beacon Blog if we catch it! If we're not quite up to the minute, it's because we're at an elementary school Valentine's Day dance, so read all about Story Screen's plans in an article we did a while back, and keep refreshing A Little Beacon Blog.

Meanwhile... It's February's Second Saturday!

CelebrateWomxn845 presents CYCLES, an art show exploring often-complex relationships with menstruation. According to Twitter, there’s an emoji about to debut. Over the years, there has been a push to destigmatize many things that bodies do. According to CYCLES organizer Regina Williams, the impetus for this art exhibition began in a social post: “A few months ago a friend posted a personal account of the joy and pain that her journey into menopause brought her, within minutes at least a hundred people responded with their own complex relationships to menstruation.” A salon-style group art show was born.
Events: There will be a Red Tent shindig on Sunday evening, as well as a reading of The Vagina Monologues on Saturday, February 16. Through Monday, February 18.

Happening This Weekend - 2/1/2019

CORRECTION: Eaglefest will be Saturday, February 9, 2019

We made it to February! Reward yourself for making it through one of the hardest months of the year with a s'mores sandwich from Hudson Valley Marshmallow Co., (next door to BJ's Soul Food) who sources their special chocolate squares from Alps Chocolate just up the block, and makes their own flavored marshmallows in their kitchen in Beacon. If you don't like marshmallows - because we usually don't either - it doesn't matter. This little mallow is placed on a perfectly measured square of chocolate between two cookie crackers, then blow-torched to melted, squishy perfection. We've got the video.

Yes, we are encouraging you to fatten up for a long winter of more snow, so get snuggly and get your own blow-torched s'more and keep on enjoying Main Street.

Let's get to the Things To Do!

Our friends at Antalek & Moore want to remind everyone not to wait for the temperature to warm up and melt the snow! Removal of snow in front of your home and/or business is crucial for the safety for those walking on the sidewalk. If someone slips and falls and gets injured, they could sue, so having insurance is important for that extra protection. If you are unable to shovel in front of your property, snow-melt salt or kitty litter will work just as well.

Snow? What snow? Just kidding. Are you subscribed to Beacon's new Emergency Alert System? It's awesome! And it has already sent a text and email alert about the dusting we got last night, in preparation for what might be coming this weekend.

If you're looking for an inspirational read this weekend, check out this journey of Beacon-based SallyeAnder, the soap (and more) company. When her father's family business was struggling, Sallie (pictured here) exited law school to step in and help out. What has resulted is a national brand, manufactured right here in Beacon on the west end of town, with the flagship store on the east end of town in the converted factory building of 1 East Main. SalleyAnder just launched a new face mask, and had a mixing party to celebrate (yes, you can eat the ingredients).

MAIN STREET SNOW TIP

In your hand, this line of minimalist Japanese luxury eyewear is extremely light and precious - as precious as the metal used in the frames' design. 10 eyevan is the name of this collection (see all of the frames here) and they use solid Japanese titanium, plated with heavy metal gold and silver. Solid sterling silver is on the temple to balance the frame, and the nose pads are made from mother of pearl. Ultimate luxury. Go in to Luxe Optique to hold a pair yourself to see what we mean.

This is a special message for this issue of the newsletter, which falls on the Winter Solstice. Solstice (in the Northern Hemisphere) will be exactly at 5:23 pm.

Howling at the Edge of Chaos is closing on Saturday. Valerie J. Mitchell opened in Beacon a year and a half ago, and created a store that showcases artists' creations that "howl their truth," which is the store's motto. Valerie was diagnosed with a rare form of ovarian cancer in June. Less than three months after her treatments ended, she has learned that the cancer is back. It is in her liver and colon and she is considered terminal. Valerie says that she has chosen quality of life, and is not pursuing treatments. She will be traveling with family and being at peace with her next steps.

The lights have been on in the store on a hit-or-miss basis, in between doctor's appointments. We stopped in and made a few purchases (pictured above) yesterday, making sure to get in while the shop was open, pushing aside any other commitments that were on the calendar.

Two lessons here. First: Valerie wove into her shop's mission to get out the truth. Her storefront window was dedicated to ovarian cancer awareness, as it is one of the most silent and swift of the cancers, often going undetected. She wants more people to be aware of their bodies and to stay in front of them. A Little Beacon Blog will be sharing an ovarian cancer awareness post to help spread the word.

Second: After we hugged and laughed a lot about anything and everything at all, Valerie made sure to talk about the "Just a Card" campaign. She's very eager to sell everything in the store, so do go in, it's very festive. The "Just a Card" campaign is one that sends the message that if every person who walked into a shop and expressed their love and appreciation for it just "bought a card" - however small the purchase - it helps the store continue and prosper. A personal regret has been not buying more from Howling at the Edge of Chaos. Many times, there are lots of little treats that could have been purchased, but were "I'll treat myself to that later."

Later may not be available anymore. Out of this entire galaxy of time, we only live for 100 years of it, if that. Some only have 36 years, or 17 years, or 9 years, or 2 years. Don't wait for later. If you want this beauty in your life - these shops, these people who set up the shops and take big risks to be here - go inside. Treat yourself. Make someone happy with a gift.

HOLIDAY HOUSE LIGHTS
Y'ALL! Beacon, you outdid yourself again this year. Marilyn, ALBB's Managing Editor, points out that we have over 25 photos (so far) in the lineup. Thank you to those who emailed in their masterpieces! Says Lauren and Brent, whose house is in our collection: "My husband and I just moved to Beacon at the end of the summer, and we were SO excited to decorate our new home."

We literally drove around with Christmas music blaring from our iPhone when the radio wouldn't work, eating chocolate and snacks while collecting pictures when we could. Traffic can make it tricky to take pictures of some houses (Verplanck - you've got it going on! But we couldn't stop with cars!)

Street names are indicated where we can, but we couldn't record streets and take pics at the same time. Taking yourself on a night drive of Beacon is wonderful this time of year. Enjoy.

Happening This Weekend - 12/7/2018

It's December's Second Saturday - maybe one of our most favorite Second Saturdays of the whole year! Businesses and galleries will be open later and the streets will be busy with holiday shoppers, art lovers, theater lovers checking out "A Chorus Line" by The Beacon Players, and tree-lighting spectators. See A Little Beacon Blog's Second Saturday Art Guide here.

Maybe consider taking a FREE yoga class at Firefly Yoga in Fishkill Saturday morning to get grounded first.

SEND 'EM IN!: Your Holiday House Lights. We'd love to make Beacon into its own Holiday Lights Show, but we need your tips! Sometimes we drive around hunting for house lights, but we can't get everywhere. Don't be shy - show us your inner Griswold! Submit a photo of the outside of your house to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com for consideration. Perfection and grandness not required. Just fun.

Let's get to the Things To Do!
