She is that child, the 6 year old Hind Rajab, that Columbia student protesters named a building after (here is the message from Hind's mother). It's May! Breakneck Point Race is this Sunday...details below. It's May! The Cold Spring Farmers' Market begins Summer Hours, opening earlier at 8:30am, still closing at 1pm, as first reported by Eggbert's Free Range Farm. It's May! Carter's has opened their grand windows and patio, and are open 7 days! It's May! The Beacon High School Career Fair is this month, and Guidance Counselor Michele Polhamus extended the registration deadline a few more days for you if you want to register your business, organization or person to show students what they can become. She also released the lineup so far to ALBB - see who is participating this year! It's May! Beacon Hoops opened registration! TBH, it was a tough week. We want to acknowledge that before we get to all of the good news. Pro-Palestinian Encampments popped up at universities all over the country, but Columbia's violent take-down by NYPD, as ordered by NYC's Mayor and Columbia University's President, was disturbing. Beacon/Newburgh local and photojournalist Alexa B. Wilkinson has photos. The student protest this week at Columbia involved an occupation of Hamilton Hall, which is what also happened back in 1968. This was near the anniversary of that time. Columbia students were protesting against the Vietnam War, Columbia's association with weapon manufacturing industry, and against Columbia University's planned build of a gym in Harlem, the preparations of which had evicted many African Americans as a real estate expansion. The majority of ALBB readers appreciate this global coverage we have been providing, as traditional media has been telling a different tale, one that paints the protesters as violent. Countless videos like this one from Israelism Film have been showing Zionist Pro-Israeli people using bats, gates, fists, and fireworks against the Pro-Palestinian students. Some voluntarily walk into encampments and call the police, saying they feel scared. Before you say: "What a waste of time," as you wonder how this relates to Beacon, please know that sentiment is extremely racist. Many, many residents of Beacon, both Jewish, Muslim, Arab Christian and Palestinian, are deeply connected to this, both with personal loss of family members and being part of the diaspora. More than one local Beacon person has said: "I just don't want it coming here." That statement is also racist. Since "coming here" isn't a thing. Defining "it" is problematic and dehumanizing. People with histories are already here. And, American's tax dollars are already funding it - to the billions. And the money just keeps flowing. And we don't have free health care. This week, encampments were erected at SUNY New Paltz and at Vassar. Last night, the administration at SUNY New Paltz ordered riot police to violently take down the encampment and arrest more than 140 people and throw away personal belongings including wallets, according to people who where there. The Administration told the students this in the afternoon, giving them a 7pm deadline. The police were not called in as a response to any activity, other than sitting and chanting. It Was A Week. Eclipses. Earthquake. :: Retail Therapy Guide 4/13/2024

What a Big. Week. We are coming out of! From the earthquake last Friday, to the eclipse on Monday (wrote a poem about it - we were in OH for 100% Totality), to the anonymous letter sender who wants ALBB to stop blogging about Palestine so sent maybe 20 anonymous letters to businesses about their opinion. How are you doing? More on that Letter Writing Campaign later in another newsletter. There's been a lot going on here at ALBB. Turns out, when you lose a bunch of genocide supporters on Instagram, and you have a letter campaign written about you, you become very attractive to other local media wanting to cover your work that is positively making a difference for people (photo shoot is scheduled for this weekend for one magazine) and a mysteriously retracted (aka deleted) article about it occurred at another newspaper (more details to come!). Tiss Tiss. Then, the respected journalist and storyteller, Ahmed Eldin followed ALBB for our Palestinian coverage, because he too has been committed to liberation coverage, and he too stopped posting his brunch photos until liberation comes (his followers were upset...they too demanded Brunch Photos but are supporting his message). Easter Green :: Retail Therapy Guide 3/22/2024

Today we took time to step through the soggy floor of one of the the destroyed apartments in Colonial Springs, which are next to Tompkins Terrace and the future Edgewater, all of which overlook the Hudson River. On Tuesday, a fire raged through the attics of multiple apartments, the early smoke of which was reportedly first seen by Newburgh's fire department across the Hudson River, who alerted Beacon's fire department. Several other fire companies assisted in putting out the fire, but everyone living in Building 3 needed to evacuate the property for an undetermined amount of time. One apartment was that of Trina Mazumber, owner of Tara Fusion Cuisine at the Hudson Valley Food Hall. Today is International Women's Day, which has been a day for recognizing which women are not recognized. Beacon resident, Palestinian refugee and local business owner (Ziatun and Beacon Bread Company) Lena Jamal shared a post from The Slow Factory that we will quote here: "This International Women’s Day we call on all who identify as feminists to engage in the lifelong unlearning of their biases and to be in solidarity with Palestinian women, Sudanese women, Congolese women who are experiencing an ongoing genocide. "In Palestine, more than 9,000 women have been brutally killed by the Israeli Occupation. Sixty three women killed per day. "In Sudan, 4 million Sudanese women & girls are at risk of sexual violence. "In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, more than 1 million women have been survivors of sexual violence. "In Turtle Island aka the so called USA, 94% of fatal violence committed again Trans people are committed against Trans women." Nancy Brownell Has Passed Away; Will Be Honored During Parade Of Green Nancy Brownell, wife of former auto dealer owner on Rte 52 Rick Brownell, passed away on February 7th at age 58 surrounded by family. She and Rick have two sons, Tyler Brownell and Justin Brownell. Nancy could be seen in Beacon often, and was known for her fashion and stylish shoes. She was involved with the Parade of Green, which this year, shares her birthday of March 9th, 2024. Her husband had posters created in her honor to celebrate. Car Caravan Coming To Town :: Retail Therapy Guide 2/16/2024

We have gotten several questions about when the next Free Palestine rally is (the first march was here). It is every Sunday from 12-3pm at Polhill Park. This week, there may be a Car Caravan attached to it, as there has been call for a Car Caravan from Kingston to Beacon on Sunday. If you enjoy car parades and decorating your car, this leveled up rally is for you. This week, after some pressure was applied from Palestinians, Jews and others to the Beacon City Council to pass a Ceasefire Resolution, the council declined. The Winter months are always the hardest months for restaurants and shops in Beacon. People are visiting less and staying indoors. Make it a point to order from your favorite restaurant to let them cook for you. Treat January-March as if it's COVID time for these restaurants. That's how badly they need your support. WAR ON GAZA UPDATE Yesterday (Thursday) was the first day of South Africa's case against Israel for the crime of genocide on Gaza, at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) the World Court in The Hague. The 5 main acts of genocide that one of the advocates representing South Africa, Adila Hassim, listed are: Mass killings of Palestinians; Bodily and mental harm; Forced displacement and food blockade; Destruction of the healthcare system; and Preventing Palestinian births. The United States and the UK also began bombing Yemen, after the Houthis in Yemen have maintained their maritime boycott of cargo ships passing through their waters. The Houthis declared that they will maintain the boycott until Israel stops bombing Palestine, and they insist on more humanitarian aid to Gazans. The Houthis have killed no one, but the United States killed at least 10 Houthi fighters before unleashing bombs yesterday, and at least 5 Houthi fighters from the bombing, General Yahya Sarea, the spokesperson for Yemen's Houthi armed forces, just confirmed. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade. Indeed, even today we have not permitted ourselves to reject or to feel remorse for this shameful episode. Our literature, our films, our drama, our folklore all exalt it. "Our children are still taught to respect the violence which reduced a red-skinned people of an earlier culture into a few fragmented groups herded into impoverished reservations. This is a sharp contrast to many nations south of the border, which assimilated their Indians, respected their culture, and elevated many of them to high position. "It was upon this massive base of racism that the prejudice toward the nonwhite was readily built, and found rapid growth. This long-standing racist ideology has corrupted and diminished our democratic ideals. It is this tangled web of prejudice from which many Americans now seek to liberate themselves, without realizing how deeply it has been woven into their consciousness. "The roots are deep, and this condition in turn influences the character of the Negro Revolution. Our history teaches us that wielding the sword against racial superiority is not effective. The bravery of the Indian, employing spears and arrows against the Winchester and the Colt, had ultimately to eventuate in defeat. On the other hand, history also teaches that submission produces no acceptable result. Nonresistance merely reinforces the myth that one race is inherently inferior to another. Negroes today are neither exercising violence nor accepting domination. The First Week! :: Retail Therapy Guide 1/5/2024

First weekend of the New Year! Happy 2024! With that, the potential first snow storm of the year! Classic arrival after December, kicking off January with snow plowing and salt. Remember to get a car wash afterwards, to wash of that salt from the bottom of your car. When there is more than 2" of snow, cars need to be off the street so that the snowplows from Beacon's Highway Department can come through. Buddy up with your neighbors or park in a free public parking lot. To open up the DMV parking lot for the anticipated cars moving from the street to the parking lot, the Beacon Farmers Market is closed this Sunday.
