Did you ever wonder why or how someone got featured in a magazine or newspaper? Did your competition, or even a business or person who you admire, "get good ink" (as the term goes when something is written about in a publication)? Was that just something wonderful and lucky that happened to them? Most likely not. They most likely "pitched" the media outlet with a good angle or story idea. Tin Shingle teachers business owners, artists and makers how to do this. And can teach you too.

Happening This Weekend - 5/17/2019

Beacon's long-awaited, first interactive art event of the Spring season has arrived - Beacon Open Studios. This weekend, dozens of artists open their homes or studios to you so that you can see their work, and see how they work. Pick up a brochure map in different stores around town, or click here to visit Beacon Open Studios' map and have it open as you walk around. This year they have created Studio Tour lists, which are suggested micro-lists of artists to hit up in a group. This is helpful for those who can't decide who to visit. Read up on the different artists here before you head out.

Lots to do this weekend! Happy planning.

Tin Shingle
Did you ever wonder why or how someone got featured in a magazine or newspaper? Did your competition, or even a business or person who you admire, "get good ink" (as the term goes when something is written about in a publication)? Was that just something wonderful and lucky that happened to them? Most likely not. They most likely "pitched" the media outlet with a good angle or story idea. Tin Shingle teaches business owners, artists and makers how to do this. And can teach you too.

Sneak Peek Into Beacon Open Studios 2019 - Kickoff Is This Weekend!

Kick Off Party - Friday
Day: May 17, 2019
Time: 6 to 9 pm

Oak Vino Wine Bar
389 Main St., Beacon, NY

Beacon Open Studios
Days: Saturday, May 18, & Sunday, May 19, 2019
Time: Noon to 6 pm
Location: Citywide in Beacon, NY!
Get the map online, or find their brochure in stores!

While Beacon celebrates its local artists all year long, the Beacon Open Studios weekend is special because once a year, the artists of Beacon open their art studios to the public. This free, citywide, weekend-long event has become one of the largest of its kind in the Hudson Valley. A Little Beacon Blog is happy to once again be a sponsor for Beacon Open Studios, the weekend of May 17-19, 2019.

Sneak Peek Into Performances and Art

The artists have been promoting their studios and exhibits in anticipation of this weekend. A few interesting pieces crossed our inbox, so we’re spotlighting them here on the blog.

Visit the Beacon Open Studios website for a directory and map of participating artists, and you can plan out your visits. The organizers even offer four different tour suggestions to help you navigate through the area. You can also pick up a brochure and map at various businesses along Main Street. You can also wing it on your own, and just follow the red dots that will be all over the city.

A-Y/Dancers Perform at KuBe (aka the Old Beacon High School)

Included with the open studios will be a live performance from the A-Y/Dancers at the KuBe Theater in the old Beacon High School on Saturday, May 18, at 5 pm and 7 pm. They will also perform at the Ethan Cohen Gallery beforehand in the hallway.

As part of their inaugural season, A-Y/Dancers licensed a unique “MinEvent” from the Merce Cunningham Trust. The performance, titled “Embodied Time: A Collaborative Performance,” is an arrangement of excerpts from works that Cunningham choreographed across three decades, from the ‘60s to the ‘90s, strung together by Jean Freebury, a former member of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. A unique score composed and performed by sound artist Mark Trecka will consist of audio recordings of the dancers’ bodies during rehearsals, transferred to cassette, but into loops, and amplified back into the room in real time. In a synchronistic approach, artist Joseph Ayers created a unique animation that samples the dancers’ movements recorded during rehearsals, and then projects the resulting abstraction as a backdrop to the live performance.

Having a hard time imagining all of that? Below is a teaser video of what you will see live on Saturday!

Happening This Weekend - 5/3/2019

This weekend includes some popular annual events, such as Crafts at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown, the Cupcake Festival at Stormville Airport, and celebrating the centennial of Pete Seeger at various Beacon venues. And whoa! There are a lot of runs this weekend! Get your running shoes on.

What you won't want to miss is the Pete Seeger-inspired song circle happening down on the Hudson River at the Beacon Sloop Club from 2 to 4 pm. The friendly musicians from Jake's Main Street Music, who played with Pete many times, encourage everyone to come down and bring their instrument and/or voice to join in and sing by the river.

If you're new to Pete Seeger and his involvement with the Hudson River, and why there is a celebration of him, know this: He is one of the biggest reasons the Hudson River is being cleaned up. Carrying on his legacy helps ensure that the river stays protected, and that cleaning continues even when corporations who caused damage want to pull out. Read this journalist's feature about Seeger in Hudson Valley Magazine after he died.

The Beacon Sloop Club is down by the Metro-North train station. It's on the west side of it, literally right next to the Hudson River. It's quite relaxing, so even if you don't sing, do go down and enjoy.

Supporting business owners, artists and makers in their outreach and business development is the backbone of Tin Shingle's programming. Tin Shingle knows this, and offers a community as a touchstone to get feedback, help you feel not crazy, isolated, or rejected. While all of those things may be happening, Tin Shingle's community is here to push you back on your feet and into the direction of thinking big, and going for big. Knot Too Shabby Website Almost Ready For Launch

Beacon's own Annie Sloan stockist store, Knot Too Shabby, is working with Katie James, Inc. to get a redesigned, easier-to-use website to sell their paint, workshops, furniture, and to make announcements. Katie James, Inc. is thrilled to be working on this project. A highlight has been taking physical elements from the store, like stencils and rustic paint styles, and incorporating them digitally into the website design. The website platform of choice is Shopify, and Knot Too Shabby has already started making sales from it. Once the design details are in place, Katie James, Inc. will train Knot Too Shabby in how to change the home page, create special shopping sections, and how to use their own website's blog to make special announcements and attract more shoppers from Google.

Events for Beacon Public Schools are popping up now that Spring has sprung! A Little Beacon Blog created a Guide to capture these, and submitting information for it is free for organizers of these events. You'll learn about South Avenue's Color-A-Thon on April 6, which is their biggest annual fundraising drive and is open to all to participate. South Avenue kids have only a few days left for online fundraising, and kids from any school can register to get blasted with color while they run around the block.

You'll also learn about a recycling opportunity for your dead markers! Yup - South Avenue has a giant marker collection box year-round to give the markers a second life.

Happening This Weekend - 3/15/2019

It's... a really spring-like day! Not wanting to jinx anything, we'll take this nice weather. Which brings us to this exciting announcement before you get your weekend on: A Little Beacon Blog's Summer Camp Guide is in full swing! And updates continue to be made as details for camps emerge!

One of our most relied upon Guides for parents in Beacon and beyond is our Summer Camp Guide. It is the most inclusive Guide in the Hudson Valley, as it is free for most camps to list, thereby giving parents plenty of unfiltered options when it comes to researching the best fits of fun, entertainment, and learning for their family's schedule.

SPONSORSHIPS NOW OPEN
Camps who want to stand out in the list can buy an Advertiser Camp Kit and get their logo listed, a photo gallery, video if they have it, and possibly an Instagram share (starts at $450 for seasonal placement in this Guide).

SECOND SATURDAY ART GUIDE
Guide Sponsored By: No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
Guide Written By: Catherine Sweet
"Working OverTime"
No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
469 Main Street, Beacon, NY
"Working OverTime," works on paper by Clarence Morgan and David Rich, opens at No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works. The exhibit asks: "What does it mean to make a painting over time? What does devotion to one’s practice extended over a lifetime entail? To painters Clarence Morgan and David Rich, each in their sixth decade, time has become compressed, with a degree of urgency about its limitations and passage."

Movies That Matter presents “Newburgh: Beauty And Tragedy: A Film By Dmitri Kasterine”
Day:
Saturday, March 9, 2019
Time: 6:45 to 10 pm
Location: First Presbyterian Church, McKinley Hall, 50 Liberty St., Beacon, NY
Dmitri Kasterine began taking pictures in Newburgh in 1996. It wasn’t the city’s reputation that drew him, but its beauty. His documentary, shot in 2015, consists of a collection of interviews together with glimpses of life and houses in ruins. Incorporating his original portraits and a commentary of what drew him to Newburgh, the film gives voice to those who live perilously, often in uninhabitable houses, in a city where education has faltered and employment is scarce. We hear what is actually happening to the fabric and people of Newburgh as they face another crisis: a determined program of gentrification.

Book Club: Wednesday, March 13 | 7 pm
Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of "The Daily Show" began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away.

Born a Crime is the story of a mischievous young boy who grows into a restless young man as he struggles to find himself in a world where he was never supposed to exist. It is also the story of that young man’s relationship with his fearless, rebellious, and fervently religious mother - his teammate, a woman determined to save her son from the cycle of poverty, violence, and abuse that would ultimately threaten her own life.
Discuss at Dennings Point Distillery on Wednesday Book Club.

2019 Parade of Green Grand Marshal Fred Antalek Shares His Fondest Beacon Memory - "Rowing Behind Rite Aid"
Born in 1937, Fred Antalek has been in Beacon with his business for a long time. We asked his daughter Susan for his fondest memory of Beacon. "When Fred was 10 years old, he used to row around in a boat on the street behind Rite Aid. This area was always flooded.” This prompted a look back on the blog as to why, which also gave us a glimpse into to the old department store, Schoonmaker's.
