2017 Summer Day Camp Guide
Ages 3-17 for Beacon and Hudson Valley Kids

SummerCamp.png

With the Hudson Valley and Beacon in particular being so rich in the arts, agriculture and a great outdoors scene, options for summer day camps are plentiful. Most camps offer weekly themes with daily projects and activities that reinforce each theme. You can definitely give your child a well-rounded summer that not only keeps them entertained, but very busy. Age groups and times vary among the summer camps. Several camps are offering early drop-off and late pickup for working parents, or for families with more than one child going to different camps. The tough part will be making a decision from among the themes and pulling the trigger on one! The good news is, you don't have to choose just one. Use this Summer Day Camp Guide to mix and match for your family's schedule.

BONUS: We've included a Scheduling List that makes assigning weeks of camp much easier than looking at your calendar each time. Scroll down and print it out! #Nerdtastic or #ListTopia. You decide!

SPECIAL NOTE FOR CAMPS: Business who offer camps can submit them for consideration to be added to this list. When submitting, please include all fields that you see below for all camps. Basically, copy/paste what you see here. We will give you brownie points in our minds, and you'll save yourself time when we don't have to bug you with followup questions. If you want to lift your camp above mere words by adding pictures, video if you have it, and a scheduled spot in our Instagram/Twitter, then check out the advertising package we created just for this Summer Camp Guide. Click here for details.

Let's start with what you'll need to provide with most every camp:
    •    Medical forms
    •    Packed lunch (Have fun with lunch boxes! Play has a bunch of cute metal ones, and Waddle n Swaddle, Echo and Utensil have reusable bags and/or organizational items.)
    •    Water shoes
    •    Bathing suit and towel
    •    Sunscreen
    •    A big bag to pack all of this stuff in
This Guide starts with summer day camps that offer sessions with the most hours per day, followed by niche camps with shorter days.

Beacon Music Factory 2017

Beacon Music Factory has established itself by cultivating with students an awareness and love of music, and of the people - composers and performers - who make it.  And in our minds, that means everybody. Campers will have access to the full range of BMF studios and facilities for all their music-making.

Summer Camp For Kids "Music Factory Camp"

Kids will create their own rock bands and drum corps; they’ll romp and play musical theater games in Memorial Park (right next door to the school). They’ll have music-appreciation jam sessions with pro musician teachers. Campers will even have the opportunity to dream up and build their own musical instruments. Those campers who already play instruments and read music will be invited to participate in string and other ensembles. One day during the week, kids will set up in the big room as a giant orchestra to "accompany" a silent film.

Mid-Hudson Children's Museum 2017

“When I Grow Up” Camps have been carefully designed to allow children ages 4-6 the opportunity to explore, create and discover three areas of the world that surrounds them. Camps empower and inspire the children by providing unique hands-on experiences relating to the theme of the week within a museum setting.

Each camp session is packed with hands-on activities that offer age-appropriate introductions to nature, reading, health, art, and science, while also encouraging development across these five distinct but connected domains that are used as indicators to assess a child’s readiness for school:

  • Fine and gross motor development
  • Social and emotional development
  • Multidisciplinary approaches to learning
  • Language and literacy development
  • Cognition and general knowledge

Each half-day session combines fun and games with interactive learning activities, music, crafts, visits from special presenters, and museum exploration.

Our camp takes place inside the museum and in our outdoor pavilion overlooking the beautiful Hudson River.

Led by MHCM educators and museum staff, our dedicated team brings many years of experience creating and delivering engaging camp activities for young children. Sessions are kept small (24-child maximum per session) to encourage the fostering of relationships between campers and counselors. All counselors are first-aid certified. Camper to counselor ratio is 8:1.

The week at Storm King was really incredible. Sadie had agreed to participate reluctantly. She asked several friends to join her but none were able. One said, “It’s not my thing.” Another was busy. Art is a stretch for Sadie and I think she [too] would say “it’s not my thing.” What I saw happen over the course of the week was a shift in her perspective. We had some great conversations on our 30 minute ride each morning and evening: What is art? What constitutes art? By the end of the week she was asking if we could come back some time, because there were pieces of art that she wanted to sit under that she hadn’t had a chance to. I think she realized that her art and her journal were incredibly impressive and it wasn’t about how it compared to the other participants. Sadie really expanded her feelings about art and found that she liked it. I wanted to let you know that it had a powerful impact on her, perhaps life changing in some way.
